EASY STREET FOR ORANGES Growers Conclude Most Successful Season in History of Industry — $34,000,000. Orange growers of Southern California are just cleaning up the most successful season in the history of citrus culture in this state. The crop brings in a gross return of $34,000,000. Of this $11,000,000 goes to railroads for freight, icing, and other charges, leaving a net balance of $23,000,000 in favor of the grower. Citrus fruit shipments from Southern California during the season just ended approximated 27,000 carloads as against 25,964 for the preceding twelve months. Of these, 23,984 carloads were oranges and 3915 lemons, which is a gain of 412 carloads in the shipment of the latter fruit over the season of 1906 07. Comparisons on the basis of carloads hardly do justice to the season just closed, for this year the shortage of refrigerator rolling stock necessitated loading the cars about one-fifth heavier than had previously been the custom. Not only has the past season been most satisfactory from the standpoint of quality and price, but the climatic conditions were so shaped as to save thousands of carloads of oranges which were threatened with decay on the trees, while the growers stood helplessly by and waited for cars. Unusually favorable weather intervened to save the day, and the growers came nearer marketing every orange in the state than during any preceding season in the history of the great industry. Owing to the larger size of the fruit the average price was slightly under that of the preceding year, the average for oranges and lemons straight through being $2 a box f.o.b., as against $2.11 the preceding year. Even better things are expected during the season just opened, indications being that the crop will be somewhat larger if the average develop a size equal to that of last year. Conditions also are said to be favorable for prices equal and possibly better than those of last season. Arguments in the car controversy have been brought to a close and it is expected that a ruling will be made in sixty or ninety days, which will be prior to the great rush that causes a scramble for cars among competitive shippers. Shipments of oranges from Tulare county have commenced and it is expected the movement of the golden fruit eastward from Southern California points will begin during this week. Dun's Review of Trade Celery, walnut, bean and raisin crops are being moved. Prospects for good returns from celery crop are better than for several years, and the walnuts are bringing the best prices in the history of that industry. The early rains caused very little loss to the bean grower; 25 per cent of the limas were in the fields; 5 per cent of these are reported injured and reduced in grade to seconds. The market is firm with sales as high as $5.25 per 100 lbs. The damage to the second crop of muscatels, caught in the curing trays, had a strengthening effect on the raisin market. The financial situation has stopped trade in futures in all cured fruit lines, but spot market is excellent. The financial situation has stopped trade in futures in all cured fruit lines, but spot market is excellent. The oil output for the year will reach between 30 and 40 million barrels, but is not meeting increased demand. The reserve supply is rapidly diminishing and price for crude oil is advancing. More people than ever before have this year taken advantage of colonist's rates to come to us, and the railroads' bookings promise an unusually large number of winter visitors. There is certainly no reason for feeling any apprehension concerning Southern California. Subig Bay to Be Fortified Washington, Nov. 6.—Simultaneously with the publication by the navy department of the itinerary of the battleship fleet around Capt Horn, the Joint Army and Navy board unanimously decided in favor of Subig Bay as the location for the United States naval station in the Philippines. As far as it goes this is a victory for Admiral Dewey, chairman of the board, as against Secretary of War Taft and Major-General Leonard Wood. Of the same vital importance is the information which also became public that five or six of the battleships that Admiral Evans will take around the Horn will be retained in Olongapo, in Subig Bay, after the others have returned to the Atlantic seaboard. This A SCHOOL FOR IRRIGATORS State Farm at Davis Gives Instruction to Boys of Technical and Scientific Nature One of the most notable addresses at the State Farmers' Institute at Davis was written by Samuel Fortier, Chief of Irrigation Investigations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, upon "What the University Farm can do for Irrigation." In the absence of Mr. Fortier the address was read by J. E.Roadhouse of the university, and was in part as follows: "What can such a farm do for irrigation? If properly equipped and managed, it will have a high educational value. The whole farm can be used to illustrate irrigation practice and particular tracts are now being set apart for the purpose of demonstrating standard methods of preparing land and applying water. In addition to the graded fields, water channels, measuring devices and irrigation structures of the farm, the plan contemplates the erection in the near future of a commodious rural engineering building. Here will be installed the best appliances for the measurement and division of irrigation water known to irrigation engineers throughout the world; the installation and operation of a pumping plant and the storage of water in an elevated tank" Returned from the East A. Hunter returned this summer a five-months' visit with friends in the east. He accompanied by his son-in-law Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Mr. Hunter went as far as visited his old home in Nebraska, and left at points of interest on He states his visit to Car-Nev., where he saw the prehistoric footprints at the state prison, was most interested. Here will be installed the best appliances for the measurement and division of irrigation water known to irrigation engineers throughout the world; the installation and operation of a pumping plant and the storage of water in an elevated tank will give students an opportunity to learn how to operate and repair gasoline engines, while the stored water in an elevated tank will afford an excellent opportunity to study and observe the action of water under pressure as it passes through orifices and closed channels. This rural engineering building is to contain carpentry and blacksmith shops, as well as drafting rooms for the designs and drawings of ordinary farm structures, such as fence gates, bridges, headgates, sheds, barns and dwellings. Another division of the rural engineering building is to be devoted to farm implements and farm machinery of the most approved types. Students will be taught how to erect, handle, repair and care for such machinery. They will also be required to study the good and the bad features of each and to determine their relative efficiency. Still another division of the engineering building is to be devoted to road-building, the making and laying of cement and concrete structures and the application of crude oils to road and irrigation canal surfaces. This brief outline conveys some idea of the scope and rural engineering and equipment necessary to give farmers' boys a practical knowledge of the subject. The name "rural" rather than "irrigation" engineering has been adopted for the reason that the former is broad enough to include all kinds of agricultural engineering and farm surveying.
