WHITE FLY AT OROVILLE State Commissioners May Call for Men from Southern Counties to Help Exterminate Dread Florida Pest The following letter, dealing with the discovery of the Florida white fly, has been received from the Citrus Protective League, 829 H. W. Hellman building, Los Angeles: To the Members of Citrus Protective League—Gentlemen: I am permitted to copy the following report of a discovery of "white fly" at Oroville, California, which will be of interest to citrus fruit growers. Very truly, A. G. KENDALL, Secretary and Manager. OROVILLE, Cal., Sept. 15, 1907. B. A. Woodford, Los Angeles, Cal. Dear Sir: You will probably have learned before this reaches you that a part of the city of Oroville is infested with the Florida white fly. This pest was discovered by myself while making an inspection of the trees in the west part of the city. A part of two blocks are badly infested, and about twenty-five more blocks are seeded. Luckily, the fly is in that part of the city furthermost from the commercial orchards. To explain the location and conditions of the city and orange districts, I will state that the city is bounded on the north and west by the Feather river, on the south and southeast by dredging land and stock ranges. This leaves a narrow neck of the city on the east side, covered with trees, leading to a section called Pleasant Valley, which contains some scattering orange groves. Thermalito section is across the river from this. WALNUTS BRING Representatives of wntions of Southern Californi Los Angeles on Saturday to sell their walnuts at a pound. "Last year the crop amounted to 5355 tons, while the yield will be 830 tons. "This condition has been strengthened by the French and Italian crops in the world, are also being age. Thermalito section is across the river from this city, having a protection strip from 1500 to 3000 feet. Palermo and Wyandotte lay five or more miles south and southeast from here, having a protection strip of several miles of stock ranges. This will give you an idea of the various orange sections in relation to the infested section (west end) of the city of Oroville. It is estimated that the city of Oroville has in its dooryards from 8000 to 10,000 orange and lemon trees. Messrs. Carnes and Maskew of the state commission and myself, as county horticultural commissioner, have been in consultation and are now formulating plans so that at the proper time the work of exterminating can be carried on without delay. While we expect some opposition we do not expect such a determined fight as the people of Marysville made against the commission there. To carry on the work successfully, it may be necessary to call on the southern counties for help in the way of inspectors, pruners or fumigators. This would not be in the shape of a plea for charity, but only in case that we could not find enough competent men to do the work. This county will pay the bills. The fly at the present time, is on the wing, and in our opinion, it would be dangerous to attempt defoliation until after cool weather sets in. During the winter season it will be entirely in the larvae stage and it can then be handled with more chances of success. I will try to keep you fully advised as to "fly" conditions here. NUTS BRING 15 CENTS Art Crop and Imperior Forlation Supply Advance Price to Highest Figure Ever Paid. Representatives of walnut association of Southern California met in Angeles on Saturday and decided to their walnuts at 15 cents per pail. In conformity to the provission of the Cartwright act, the price was determined upon as heretofore, an offer from local and eastern cars at this price was accepted. Walnuts will be higher this year ever before in the history of cultivation in this state," said a ear of the meeting. "The price year paid to the grower ranged 10 to 11 cents a pound. This he will receive from 14 to 15 with very little stock offered at lower figure. Last year the crop in California rated to 5355 tons, while this year field will be 830 tons less. This condition has been still more thened by the fact that the in and Italian crops, the largest world, are also below the average. 1896, when the state produced reloads, the price was the lowest and 7 cents a pound. In 1902 the was the largest ever produced, the increased demand over former road advanced them to 9¼ and 10 pound. 1905, when 615 cars were shipped this state, the price was very ranging between twelve and a thirteen cents. STANDARD OIL CO. Incorporated Greatest of All Pitchers An associated press dispatch from Washington gives the following glowing account of Walter Johnson, who learned the game in this city: Washington, D. C., Sept. 17—Never before in the history of baseball has a young pitcher without even the slightest minor-league experience made so great a record in a major league as has Walter Johnson since joining the Washington league. None of the pitching stars of the great game made so impressive a showing in fast company as has the California wonder, and the prediction is not amiss that he is the greatest of all pitchers the game has ever developed. Johnson made good from the outset, and he has shown improvement with every game. He is the only youngster that ever broke into fast company who has absolute control of the ball. Not one of the others was reliable in this respect, and control is the most essential requirement of a pitcher. Delinquent Office of the Anaheim UniAnaheim, Orange Co. By the time the nuts hit by the brokers then the ing in last company as has the California wonder, and the prediction is not amiss that he is the greatest of all pitchers the game has ever developed. Johnson made good from the outset, and he has shown improvement with every game. He is the only youngster that ever broke into fast company who has absolute control of the ball. Not one of the others was reliable in this respect, and control is the most essential requirement of a pitcher. The fact that he has terrific speed—no pitcher has more—not to speak of the quick break of his curves and the deceptive shoot of his fast ball, and his ability to put the ball wherever he wants to, are the secrets of his success. Johnson is a pitcher whom a catcher can coach. If the catcher knows a batsman's weakness he has but to hold the glove to indicate where he wants the ball, and Johnson can place it there with all the speed at his command. When Johnson is hit it is the fault of the catcher, who has been outguessed by the batsman. Here is a mere boy without an hour's experience in organized baseball when he joined the Washington team, pitching the best ball in the country and daily showing improvement. He is acquiring the knowledge of the art, which is nine-tenths of the effectiveness of ever pitcher. In course of time he will master the change of pace, which is not only the most deceptive feature of a delivery, but which does much to rest a pitcher's arm. But even if he has no more than he has at the present time, Johnson stands an excellent chance of leading the list of all pitchers. There is nothing of the morning glory about Johnson. He is not getting away by sheer luck. He has the goods, and next season should be the greatest of them all. The fact that he has not been worn out by working in a minor league is to his advantage. His best years are before him, and the Washington club will get the benefit of them. The securing of Johnson was the luckiest strike Washington ever made. He is the club's chief asset. If he were placed on the market today he would bring not less than $10,000. Johnson is a member of the Washington team to stry. Cantillon will build his pitching staff around the California wonder.
