GLAD HAND TO THE BEACH Chamber of Commerce extends Thanks to Huntington Beach Company—Will Work For Trolley Line. A vote of thanks was unanimously tendered the Huntington Beach company by the Anaheim chamber of commerce at its meeting on Thursday evening, for the company's endorsement of a route for an electric railway from the beach through Talbert, Garden Grove and this city. It is understood the line will ultimately continue up River canyon to Riverside. There is also talk of a line connecting with Fullerton and the La Habra valley road. Directors Olmstead, Walker, Wickett, Resh and Howard were present. J. B. Neff and W. A. Newberry, representing the section southwest of the city, were also in attendance. Mr. Olmstead made report of his interview with the Huntington Beach company in Los Angeles last week, whither he went in company of committees from Huntington Beach, Talbert and Garden Grove. He was assured, he said, as has been already published in this journal, that if Anaheim would procure right of way for an electric road between Garden Grove and this city, the Huntington Beach company, which holds a contract with the Pacific Electric railway company to designate the route of the line proposed to be constructed, would recommend the route through this city. This was considered important raise the large amount population distributed to that city. He thus would require $7500 to grade from this city to Garden Grove. A general discussion ensued consensus of opinion being that $10,000 would be necessary for way and grading. Doubt pressed whether the amount raised, but the opinion prevails an energetic effort should be secured the road at whatever cost. Secretary Walker read a vow correspondence, among the corporations being a letter from the clerk of Pomona relative to the sewer system in that city official wrote that there were no in the sewer farm, which cost in the year 1900. Some of them planted to walnuts, with oak grain crops between trees while The outfall sewer pipeline is vitrified pipe. The sewage energy into a septic tank at the farm, 28x40x8. The outfall sewer is eight miles long, and cost construction at that date $20,000. Total expense of the farm, pipe and other incidental expenses was $30,000. The central system consists of sewer districts, which have been constructed under the Vrooman and Judge Howard and Mr. Neff were appointed a committee to local banks in the endeavor to more advantageous loans upon THE REASON WHY. Considerable discussion is being dulged in by our citizens regarding the construction of the electric line. The question is frequently Why should we be required to go roadbed in addition to securing of way. A telephone message from Huntington Beach this week explains matter. One of the railway He was assured, he said, as has been already published in this journal, that if Anaheim would procure right of way for an electric road between Garden Grove and this city, the Huntington Beach company, which holds a contract with the Pacific Electric railway company to designate the route of the line proposed to be constructed, would recommend the route through this city. This was considered important, inasmuch as Santa Ana has for several months past been endeavoring to deflect the line three miles east to that city. That town has offered to procure right of way and do the necessary grading, as well as build a bridge across the river west of that town. Huntington Beach, Talbert and Garden Grove agree to procure right of way through their sections, and will also grade the roadbed. The Huntington Beach delegates, he continued, were enthusiastically in favor of the route through this city, and combatted the suggestion of a possible deflection to Santa Ana. "If you want to destroy Huntington Beach," said one of the committee, "run the road to Santa Ana." The cost of grading the line is estimated at $2000 per mile, and there will be about three or four miles to grade. Mr. Olmstead urged the chamber to take action upon the offer of the Huntington Beach company, and at the suggestion of Mr. Resh Secretary Walker prepared a resolution extending the thanks of the chamber to that company, pledging itself to proceed to the work of procuring right of way as soon as necessary surveys are made, and adding that the chamber will honestly endeavor to comply with such other conditions as are required. The resolution was unanimously passed, and copies ordered forwarded the Huntington Beach company. and the railway committees at Talbert and Garden Grove. The chamber took up the grading proposition, discussing it freely, Mr. Wickett being of opinion that it imposed undue burdens upon the people. He had rather see the grading proposition cut out and a request made simply for right of way, which he felt assured the chamber could easily procure. Mr. Neff suggested that it was considerable discussion is being dulged in by our citizens regarding the construction of the electric line. The question is frequently why should we be required to go roadbed in addition to securing of way. A telephone message from Huntington Beach this week explains matter. One of the railway companies, replying to a question related to the matter, said: "The 'other lows' (meaning Santa Ana) grade the roadbed if the lines verted to that city, and it was advisable to offer the railway on the same advantages." In other words, Santa Ana, the Pacific Electric company, sponsible for this innovation in construction. Waging War on White Bakersfield, Aug. 27.—La for a week, the entomologists state commission of horticulture have almost completed the fication of the citrus trees infected with the white fly on William S. Stockdale ranch near this city. The ground under the tree gated is now white with the bands of insects which have killed. The fumigation tent been kept busy ever since the mologists have commenced work, and now allowing them to work on each tree about at a time, nearly all of the trees have been treated. He had rather see the grading proposition cut out and a request made simply for right of way, which he felt assured the chamber could easily procure. Mr. Neff suggested that it was uncertain whether a diagonal right of way is desired, or whether a route running on the quarter section line would suffice. If the latter, he thought right of way could be easily procured. He said an air line could be secured on this quarter section line from a point southwest of town to Talbert, a distance of ten miles. Mr. Newberry characterized the grading clause as an unusual proposition. However he said, as regards the route, the railway company would probably require an air line, and that this could probably be cheaply secured through the section east of his ranch and west of Mr. Neff's. An air line through Garden Grove could be secured along this route straight to Huntington Beach. He said that the orchardists southwest of town would undoubtedly contribute to a fund for securing right of way, as well as other necessary expenses. When the electric line was built through Garden Grove two years ago ranchers as far as a mile back from the line contributed to liquidate damages sustained by farmers through whose property the road ran. He said most of the money for right of way was raised in this manner, and that Santa Ana did not Edward K. The proposal of the Huntington Beach company to recommend to the Pacific Electric railway the construction of an electric line of railway from that thriving seaside metropolis by way of Garden Grove and Talbert to this city, if Anaheim will procure right of way and grade the roadbed between this city and Garden Grove, is one which should suggest itself favorably to every resident of this city. The Huntington Beach company holds a contract with the Pacific Electric company, as was pointed out in these columns last week, giving it the key to the route to be traversed by the electric line to be constructed inland from Huntington Beach. In a word, the contract provides that the Pacific Electric will build the line upon whichever route the Huntington Beach company recommends. At a meeting of representatives of this city, Garden Grove, Talbert and Huntington Beach with the Huntington Beach company in Los Angeles last week the directors of the latter company gave assurance that they would favor the route through this city provided right of way were secured and the roadbed graded. Shall we agree to these conditions? Assuredly yes! This city has run down many will-o'-the-wisps in electric road-building in the past. First, a road would be projected, upon what seemed good authority, to enter the town from one side, and then another from an opposite direction. The jack-o'-lantern of the route through the Allen ranch hitherward from Artesia, which sprang uplast year, was probably the worst of those false alarms. A committee of distinguished citiens who made an appointment with Mr. Pillsbury relative to this route, and who shortly called upon him at his office in the Pacific Electric building, were assured the route suggested was not one which could in any manner commend itself to the company. It was a parallel line, he pointed out quite speedily upon the map, and the company was not at that time building parallel lines. He had not previously heard of the route, and more to the same effect. The whole thing was a flash in the pan. The committee withdrew; and it is doubtful if the prospects for a trolley line for this city and adjacent towns were at all improved by the visit. The newspapers were blamed for giving prominence to this electric-railway rumor, but they were really not to blame. The genesis of the story sprang from the man who had recently "seen Huntington," or Pillsbury, and who was probably using the towns adjacent to him as tail to his personal kite in a fancied section. The genesis of the story sprang from the man who had recently "seen Huntington," or Pillsbury, and who was probably using the towns adjacent to him as tail to his personal kite in a fancied chance for his own emolument. At other times the electric railway has seemed near, and once a franchise was awarded the company for a line through this city. Rails were laid underground, to hold the franchise, but the latter has probably long since lapsed. This latest proposition, which comes to us from Huntington Beach, looks like "the goods" to us. It comes nearer having the trueing connected with it than has characterized any other electric railway move which has as yet appeared here. Our citizens have seemed to get on with the wide awake people of Huntington Beach particularly well in the past. In fact, had another month's time been granted the county-division discussion last winter, Anaheim and Huntington Beach, as well as a large intervening area, might now have been in Los Angeles county. Twenty magnificent gold and silver vases, cups and punch bowls of massive design and exquisite workmanship comprise the list. Each one is a work of art. These are the gifts of public-spirited bodies and individuals in California desirous of promoting the development of the irrigation and forestry movements. The actual cost of these trophies ranges from $250 to $1200 each. They are offered for the best collective and single exhibits respectively, entered for competition in the interstate display. Each of these valuable prizes is worthy the most strenuous effort on the part of prospective exhibitors. Those who bear away the splendid awards will be richly repaid for their trouble in preparing exhibits. In addition to these magnificent trophies there are other prizes intrinsically as valuable as the more costly in the list. Three bulls of the most aristocratic lineage and representing the finest herds of their respective breeds in America, are among the inducements that stimulate enthusiasm among producers for the illustrative display. Never has a finer trio of prize bulls of the purest blood been grouped in such connection in the history of American agricultural displays. The aggregate value of the bulls is $2500. Nor does this complete the extraordinary prize list of the interstate exposition. Many thousands of dollars apportioned in sums of $100 and $50 each are offered for the best single and individual sample displays. A sample box of fruit, a single sheaf or cereal, a sample of forage or a sack of tubers may win for its owner substantial sum of glittering gold coin of the realm. The total valuation of real and personal propetry has increased $252,599,798 since last year. Railroad assessment has increased $32,811,395. This will allow a state rate of 44½ cents or 3.1 cents less than last year. Whether this will be the rate fixed cannot now be determined, but the levy will be very near that figure. The Portland “Oregonian,” which ought to know, declares that national forests do not, as charged by some, interfere with home building. For this view it gives two reasons: (1) that the creation of a national forest does not prevent settlement; and (2) that there are very few places in a national forest where one wants to make a home. The agricultural department has many times declared its policy of removing from the limits of national forests all lands wanted for settlement.
