VOLUME XXXVII ANAHEM MR. RESH STARTS THE BALL Offers Water Company Free Site for Office in Block West of Opera-House—New Hotel. The directors of the water company were on Saturday offered by John Resh, the enterprising realty booster, a thirty-foot lot at the corner of Center and Hedwig streets, for the erection of a headquarters office, free of cost. The lot is valued at $3000. A fifty-foot lot across the street brought an offer of $2500 this week, which was refused. The lot offered is the property of John Burchard. The board expressed its thanks for Mr. Resh's offer, and voted that if the Hart offer be not made good in thirty days, to accept Mr. Resh's offer. For a month or more past the question of the water headquarters has been in abeyance, with conflicting reports about offers made by Jacob Stern and C. C. Chapman of a house and lot free at Fullerton, if the headquarters were removed to that city and considerable quiet work doing since the beginning of The water board has recent up the discussion of a head office energetically. The present quarters are overcrowded the large amount of valuation comprising maps, reports, publications, rights-of-way and other items are becoming more exposed to fire. A conservative mate of these papers is placed 000. Many of the documents be replaced. The board discussed the propriety of erecting vault for the safekeeping of persons. Mr. Resh's offer at once prospects for the speedy eradication of the two-story headquarters since Saturday afternoon he been the principal topic of conversation. C. W. For a month or more past the question of the water headquarters has been in abeyance, with conflicting reports about offers made by Jacob Stern and C. C. Chapman of a house and lot free at Fullerton, if the headquarters were removed to that city, and of the possibility of a vote to be taken upon removal at the annual election in January. Other statements have been current that an affirmative vote upon removal could not be secured, and so the matter has rested for probably two months, with nothing doing, and apparently no one caring a rap for it one way or another. Mr. Hart asks $4000 for his lot east of the First National bank, but may be prevailed upon to shave the price to some extent. He also offers to donate $500 to the fund to be raised by citizens for the purchase of the lot. The deal, however, seems to have fallen through, and nothing was doing until Mr. Resh started the ball rolling again. It is reported he has the backing of East Center street property owners who stand ready to assist him in his enterprise. It was rumored yesterday that if his offer be accepted, a three-story brick hotel will be erected upon an adjacent corner immediately after work on the water office begins. The contest seems at this writing to be between the Hart and Resh offers. Property-owners interested in the latter offer are busy, but Mr. Hart has been in San Diego for a week and nothing is known as to the proposal to have him cut the price of his lot to $3000. West Center street property-owners have not lost faith in being able to land the office upon the Kroeger lot, C. W. Pipkin of Los Angeles has been here during several past soliciting business for man-American bank, departing Tuesday, after a very prosperous section with such great new sources, and he speaks in high of the people whom he has met. Newberry were appointed a committee by the chamber of commerce to join with committees from Garden Grove, Talbert and Huntington Beach in reference to the construction of an electric line joining these places. Mr. Olmstead, representing the local committee, went to Los Angeles on Monday, and met with committees from Talbert, Huntington Beach and Garden Grove. The committees met with the Huntington Beach company, which has a contract with the Pacific Electric railway company, for the construction of a line upon whichever route may be selected by the Huntington Beach citizens. The meeting was informed by representatives of the Huntington Beach company that efforts had been hitherto Kipkin of Los Angeles, who here during several weeks setting business for the German bank, departed on after a very prosperous stay. The committees met with the Huntington Beach company, which has a contract with the Pacific Electric railway company, for the construction of a line upon whichever route may be selected by the Huntington Beach citizens. The meeting was informed by representatives of the Huntington Beach company that efforts had been hitherto made, with some show of success, to have the road go direct to Santa Ana. However, Mr. Olmstead was assured that if Anaheim would procure a double-track right of way from Garden Grove hitherward, and grade the same, the Huntington Beach company would approve the route, and would so represent the case to the Pacific electric company. Mr. Olmstead will lay the matter before the chamber of commerce at its meeting this evening. Santa Ana is in the field working for a deflection of the route to that city. A survey some time ago made ran the line some three miles west of that city. Santa Ana immediately took up the matter with the Huntington Beach company and the Pacific Electric people, but up to the present time has been unsuccessful in making an impression upon either corporation. It is the consensus of opinion among those well-informed upon railway matters that if the conditions here outlined are met by our people the line will be constructed on the lines laid down. A line joining this city with Garden Grove, Talbert and Huntington Beach will be of inestimable value to this city. These rapidly growing communities are favorable to the route, are against the deflection toward Santa Ana, and will co-operate with every movement made by people of this city. The line will continue north or east of this city, if constructed, either to Fullerton and a junction with the La Habra line, or to Placentia, Richfield, and up the River canyon to Riverside. The attitude of the Huntington Beach company is most important. It reduces to a tangible shape the many rumors in circulation for months past relative to electric railway construction. Does Anaheim want this railway line? Residents of the section between Anaheim and Garden Grove have announced their intention of co-operating in securing right of way, and will assist in meeting all other conditions. Mr. and Mrs. A. T.
