Soil Fertilization
The declaration of Prof. Milton Whitney, chief of the bureau of soils of the United States department of agriculture, to the effect that he has discovered a new theory of soil fertilization, which may necessitate a complete revision of the science of the chemistry of soils, has stirred up a row between experts on the subject of soil all over the country.
Prof. Whitney's latest theories have just reached the Coast in pamphlet form, and have been brought to the attention of Dr. E. W. Hilgard, former dean and chief of the United States agricultural experiment station at Berkeley, who is considered the most learned soil expert in America, if not in the world.
Prof. Whitney maintains the growth of plants does not exhaust the soil. This, according to orthodox scientists of Dr. Hilgard's school is heresy.
"It is evident," says Whitney, "that mere addition or subtraction of chemical elements from the soil will not determine the fertility of the soil. Plants, on the contrary, secrete their poison. Our methods of fertilizing soils in the past have been all wrong."
Dr. Whitney reaches his conclusions by experiments carried on by himself and others. Dr. Hilgard says:
"This theory, which Prof. Whitney seems to think is new, was advanced, discussed and exploded a hundred years or so ago. This is not the only time that Prof. Whitney has advanced a new theory calcu-

Dr. Whitney reaches his conclusions by experiments carried on by himself and others. Dr. Hilgard says:
“This theory, which Prof. Whitney seems to think is new, was advanced, discussed and exploded a hundred years or so ago. This is not the only time that Prof. Whitney has advanced a new theory calculated to upset and overthrow everything that has been learned up to the present time regarding soils. Prof. Whitney has been proven wrong so often that the farmers in the West do not take him seriously.”
Now the war is on, some interesting developments are promised.
Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free.

Increase of Forest Reserve
More than ordinary interest is attached to the restoration to entry of almost 10,000 acres of forest reserve lands in San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties, known as portions of the San Jacinto reserve, from the fact that portions of the territory to be so restored are along the line of the Spreckels’ San Diego and Eastern Railway. The lands, many of which were withdrawn from entry last year, but the greater portion of which were withdrawn about four years ago, were opened to inspection July 27, and will be opened for entry Aug. 27, this year.
Some of these lands are in the mountains north of Campo,

Some of these lands are in the mountains north of Campo, about half a mile from the Mexican line, and there are several famous ranches in the vicinity. Jamul ranch, near the border and the East San Felipe and Cuyamaca ranches farther north are within easy distance from the lands to be restored. One parcel of land is near Cabazon, on the El Paso line of the Southern Pacific adjoining the Mission Indian reservation.
These lands lie in townships 17 and 18 range 1; township 3, range 3; townships 11, 12, 13, 14 and 16, range 5; and townships 9, 16, and 17, range 6, all south and east. Nearly all the lands are valuable for general ranching, others are more valuable for grazing than for the raising of crops.
Much interest is being manifested in these lands and there is a probability that August the 27th will find a long line of applicants in the local land office to make entries for them.
