It calls for an expenditure of Wiff Drain Lake Elsinore A plan is being worked out in Los Angeles to add at least 10,000 acres of irrigated land of the finest quality to the productive area of Southern California. It calls for an expenditure of $500,000. The scheme is to tunnel under the hills west of Elsinore lake and drain all the water from the bed of the lake. This will convert it into a fresh water reservoir, which will furnish water enough to irrigate at least 10,000 acres. This lake depends for its supply upon the winter rains on the water sheds about the basin. The lake overflows after the water reaches a certain height, and during the summer months much water evaporates, leaving a continually increasing alkali deposit on the bottom of the lake. In centuries this deposit has become so great that it renders the water unfit for irrigation purposes at the time of year when water is needed for this purpose. By running a tunnel under the hills, the water will be let out on the west side and find its way to the ocean, about Newport or Balboa. Once the alkali deposit is removed, the winter rains may be stored at very little expense. By using the water for irrigating in summer the supply will always be fresh. An interest which has secured control of nearly 20,000 acres below the level of the lake has taken the matter up and there is activity among the real estate men, the purpose being to organize a syndicate to float bonds to carry out the plan. It is not believed there will be much difficulty in the half million dollars reel. But water for irrigation and the increased value of the only considerations in it. If the proposed tunnel can there will be an immense water and the power that will be converted into which could be furnished by the way from Riverside to those who have taken up are practical men. Walnuts in France Walnut growers of Orange County will be interested in a letter received at Rivera from A. H. Dunlap who is touring the walnut districts of France. Mr. Dunlap writes: "The Grenoble trees of the same age are much smaller than those of California, having short limbs and very small tops. The bearing surface on one of the trees is about one-third of what one of ours is. In riding over the valley I found a few trees on which are a fair crop, but the majority of the trees have a very light crop or none at all. Later I drove to Tullins, the heart of the walnut district driving through the valley on both sides of the river for fifty miles. I talked to many of the farmers and they all agreed with me that the crop will be very light. Just what the quality of nuts would be no one could tell as yet, but the season is unusually late." "There has never been a better out- look for the season's celery crop than there is at present," said E. A. Curtice of the California Vegetable Growers' union, who has recently been on a tour of inspection of the celery district. He says more than two-thirds of the planting is finished. Six thousand five hundred acres will be under cultivation in this county alone within the next thirty days. The crop will be ready for the market one month earlier than last year.
