California's Fisheries
A symposium on California's fisheries from the standpoints of the sportsman and the market, constitutes the August number of the monthly magazine, "For California," published by the California Promotion Committee. In the flood of descriptive literature on the attractions and resources of the state, her fishing interests have not been accorded the attention they deserve. There is certainly no other state in the Union which can exhibit such scope and diversity in its fish products as can California. It may be said also that there are very few regions of the world that can vie with her along this line. The government has wisely appreciated the importance of California's fishing interests, and has for many years maintained fish hatcheries at advantageous locations throughout the state, and these are doing splendid work in annually repairing the waste in lake and stream which the open fishing season brings about.
Dr. David Starr Jordan is one of the contributors to the number under the caption "Trout Fishing in California." "An Angler's Paradise: Santa Catalina Island," is the subject of an article by John G. Cantor; W R. Welch writes of the "Salmon Fishing in the Bay of Monterey" and C. W. Nelson contributes an account of the "Trout of Lake Tahoe." H. A. Green under the caption of "The Abalone" gives an account of that little known univalve, and the men who gather it. The "Fishing and Fisheries of Humboldt" is the title of an article by George A. Kellogg.

Cruiser California Put in Service
Vallejo, Aug. 1.—The armored cruiser California, the latest addition to Uncle Sam's fighting fleet, was commissioned at the Mare Island navy yard this morning after a short but impressive ceremony.
Captain Thomas S. Phelps, her commander, read the order which placed her in service, after which he delivered to the assembled crew a short address, expressing hope that the ship would prove worthy, both of the country as a whole and the state whose name she bears.
Admiral H. W. Lyons accompanied Captain Phelps to the ship. The officers were in full uniform and walked between lines of blue jackets with presented arms. The naval band played the national hymn on the ship's deck, and the assembled crew joined in on the chorus of the Star Spangled Banner.

Captain of the Yard McCracken also addressed the crew. Thousands of spectators watched the flag ascend to the truck, which officially declared the ship in the service.
The California was built by the Union Iron Works, but was completed at Mare Island on account of the ironworkers' strike at the San Francisco yard. The vessel has a displacement of 13,680 tons and indicated horsepower of 23,000. Her main battery consists of eighteen guns. The vessel is considered the queen of the Pacific squadron.
Two-Cent Law Reduces Fares
Reductions in interstate fares from all the prominent places in the East to the principal points west of Chicago and St. Louis will be made Aug 6, by the eastern railroads, special permission to do so having been granted by the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Because of reductions in interstate fares made by the western railroads owing to the passage of two cent fare laws by many states passengers from eastern to western points have been able to save from $1 to $6 by buying a ticket over eastern roads only to western terminals, and then rebuying over a western road to their destination.
There is a difference of nearly $6 be-
