In the flood of descriptive literature on the attractions and resources of the state, her fishing interests have not been accorded the attention they deserve. There is certainly no other state in the Union which can exhibit such scope and diversity in its fish products as can California. It may be said also that there are very few regions of the world that can vie with her along this line. The government has wisely appreciated the importance of California's fishing interests, and has for many years maintained fish hatcheries at advantageous locations throughout the state, and these are doing splendid work in annually repairing the waste in lake and stream which the open fishing season brings about. Dr. David Starr Jordan is one of the contributors to the number under the caption "Trout Fishing in California." "An Angler's Paradise: Santa Catalina Island," is the subject of an article by John G. Cantor; W R. Welch writes of the "Salmon Fishing in the Bay of Monterey" and C. W. Nelson contributes an account of the "Trout of Lake Tahoe." H. A. Green under the caption of "The Abalone" gives an account of that little known univalve, and the men who gather it. The "Fishing and Fisheries of Humboldt" is the title of an article by George A. HATZFELD'S POPULAR PHARMACY Next to Postoffice ANAHEIM Cruiser California Put in Service Vallejo, Aug. 1.—The armored cruiser California, the latest addition to Uncle Sam's fighting fleet, was commissioned at the Mare Island navy yard this morning after a short but impressive ceremony. Captain Thomas S. Phelps, her commander, read the order which placed her in service, after which he delivered to the assembled crew a short address, expressing hope that the ship would prove worthy, both of the country as a whole and the state whose name she bears. Admiral H. W. Lyons accompanied Captain Phelps to the ship. The officers were in full uniform and walked between lines of blue jackets with presented arms. The naval band played the national hymn on the ship's deck, and the assembled crew joined in on the chorus of the Star Spangled Banner.
