Tomatoes Coming On Mr. Littlefield has been making a tour of the tomato acreage contiguous to this point for the cannery, which opens for the season the latter part of August. He finds a large acreage producing this vegetable, as well as a vast area devoted to chiles, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sweet corn and berries. At Villa Park he found one farmer shipping tomatoes to Los Angeles by express, receiving 4 cents a pound. The retail rate in this city has been 10 cents per pound. Mr. Littlefield is of opinion the maturing crop will soon bring the price down within reach of the common people. South of town, on the Pennington place, he found that farmer cultivating ten acres of fine berries. From a few rows of sweet corn he expects 700 dozen bags. He finds potatoes, sweet potatoes, chiles, berries and tomatoes in quantities sufficient to supply a large portion of the southern coast territory. The cannery looks forward to a big run on tomatoes this season.
