the farmers must be obtained most every locality in which provide good roads have broad stantial results, it has been first to gain the support of the rural classes. Nor has there been a difficult task. The farmer does not wish to be tally to provide modern highways which “city folks” may spend automobiles. But show him good roads mean money in both and he becomes enthusiastic. And the demonstration is too difficult.
There is no lack of hard figures to prove beyond a question the better the highways over crops are hauled, the less cost of hauling them. For each has been shown that on sand bushels of grain are a load horse team; on the so-called 50 bushels; on macadam bushels, and on the best grade road roads 200 bushels. It been shown that a sum equal one-third of the value of the products of the country, is expensed in hauling them to mass shipping points. This is an hundreds of millions of dollars to 40 per cent of this vast dead loss. That is to say, the tage of the cost of hauling saved if it were done over roads. And the sum thus said be sufficient to build annual lands of miles of magnificent cost of $10,000 a mile.
Throughout the country when they realize the practice of good roads to them, have become earnest workers to them. It is not doubted that be the result here in San Lorenzo County.

Boll Weevil to be Fed
Washington, May 9.—Theical survey of the United States department of agriculture has on a somewhat novel mounding the southern cotton in his war against the booby. As is well known this insect the state of Texas several years ago has damaged the cotton the extent of millions of dyes annually. Despite the effort its increase, it is spreading rate of about fifty miles away unquestionably in time with its ravages into all the cottons.
The survey has been involved in the pest in Texas for several and finds that no fewer than seven species of birds feed on insect. It is not claimed alone can check the spread weevil, but it has been demonstrated that they are an important which the farmer cannot ignore.
Hence an appeal is mad

The Farmers and Good Roads
The gentlemen who took part in the meeting at the chamber of commerce yesterday, says the San Diego Union, went to the very core of the good roads question when they decided that if the movement for improved highways is to be made a success, the co-operation of

INSECTIVOROUS BIRDS.
Other insectivorous birds adopt different methods when in pursuit of prey. Orioles alight on the cotton bolls and carefully inspect them for weevils. Blackbirds, wrens and flycatchers contribute to the good work, each in its own sphere, but when swallows are migrating over the cotton fields they find weevils flying in the open and wage active war against them. The idea is to increase the number of swallows, both at the north and the south. The colonies nesting in the south will destroy a greater or less number of weevils during the summer; while in the fall, after the local birds have migrated, northern-bred birds, as they pass through the southern states on their way to the tropics, will keep up the war.
Anti-Trust Law Violators
Washington, May 4.—After having been pushed into a corner by the government for violating the Sherman anti-trust law and when prosecution was about to begin, the Southern Pacific railway, in the hope of escaping the consequences of its acts, today notified the interstate commerce commission that it has abrogated its agreement with the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake road to maintain identical rates. It is by no means certain that it will escape prosecution.
E. H. Harriman is the controlling factor in the Southern Pacific railroad and former Senator Clark of Montana built the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake line. These two roads had a long fight to secure the right of way for the road built by Clark, and as the outcome of this contest the two roads agreed to maintain the same local freight and passenger rates at all times. This was a clear violation of the Sherman anti-trust law and the government now has enough evidence to secure a conviction.
This agreement is one of the points developed during the investigation in New York by the interstate commerce commission of Harriman's operations in securing control of the Illinois Central railway and his operations in the Chicago and Alton and some of the

freight and passenger rates at all times. This was a clear violation of the Sherman anti-trust law and the government now has enough evidence to secure a conviction.
This agreement is one of the points developed during the investigation in New York by the interstate commerce commission of Harriman's operations in securing control of the Illinois Central railway and his operations in the Chicago and Alton and some of the stock transactions involved in it.
Notice of the abrogation of the agreement was given the interstate commerce commission by R. S. Lovett, general counsel for the Southern Pacific road, with headquarters at New York. The reason given for the abrogation of the agreement to maintain rates is that the legislature of California, at its last session, adopted a law making such agreements within California illegal.
But the interstate commerce commissioners are by no means certain that this is the real and only reason. The two roads have known for months that the government has been gathering evidence in this case, which is now practically made out. The facts will be turned over to the department of justice and there are strong probabilities that a prosecution will be made.
