COMPANY E'S MEN DISPERSE
Guardsmen Permitted to Return Home, Remaining Within Call — Situation in North Clearing
On Monday morning thirty members of Company E were permitted to return to their homes, with instructions to report once daily at the armory, and to remain within telephonic communication for instant call to arms. Dispatches from the north, bringing news that the strike situation is clearing, resulted in the order. Many of the guardsmen were inconvenienced in business by the assembling of the company for service in the north, but all observed the order implicitly and the entire complement of officers and men responded.
The initial summons came at 1:35 o'clock on Wednesday morning, May 8th. At 7 o'clock the entire company, with exception of a few out-of-town members, were at the armory. Those who had not opportunity to join the company at the armory in time for immediate embarkation north, were telephoned to join the company in Los Angeles and at other points on the way north. One member residing at Alessandro and Keen disappointment was part of the guardsmen as they pulled in and left without them.

At noon orders came to take the 3:50 Southern Pacific train north. The company's equipment was prepared for shipment, and all was bustle at the armory. Guardsmen wore their blue uniforms. They carried the new army rifle, and cartridge belts filled with ammunition.
An hour later orders came countermanding the order to move. A large crowd gathered to see the boys off.

his duty to call out the troops. Both Schmitz and Cornelius had a bad quarter of an hour with the governor. Jerry Dinan hastened to see him, but was unable to do so.
While standing at the corner of Sutter and Kearney streets Gov. Gillett saw several bricks thrown from the fifth or sixth story of a building at the corner at a passing street car. He had been on a personal tour of observation of the city. He went no further. He sent for the indicted mayor and told him to maintain order, or the state would do it for him.
There is no doubt that the Governor's threat to call out the guard has acted as a deterrent to the strike-crazed union men of the northern town. San Francisco does not want martial law, but unless she preserves the peace, the state will take a hand in the game and show them what an orderly and well-disciplined town looks like.

"They wouldn't let a good man off, but a darned excuse like me they're glad to get rid of," he said, smilingly, as he walked into the armory the day after the call was received.
Scott received a telegraphic summons early on Wednesday, and arrived in Los Angeles in the afternoon, expecting to join his company there on its way north. He expected to meet the boys at the depot, but they came not. A counter-mand order had come in the meantime. Scott took in the Fiesta in the evening and the next morning came in on the early train.
"Just walked into town, and ready for any duty, camp, garrison or guard-house," he said.
Scott is station agent for the Santa Fe at Alessandro. He is the only resident of the town. When the call came he wired for leave of absence, and took the next train in from the desert.
"There's a boy with his heart in the right place," observed a bystander.
Messrs. Adams, Howard, Baum and Ablborn of the executive committee of the proposed celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of this city, met in the chamber of commerce rooms on Tuesday evening. The committee reported an apparent disinclination to hold the anniversary exists among the people and in view of a lack of enthusiasm it is probable that no celebration will be held this year. The committee adjourned to meet again on next Tuesday evening when final action in the matter will be taken.

Water Headquarters
though it is several weeks since water board selected the Hart lot site for its headquarters office, it seems to have been nothing doing regard to collecting sufficient funds for purchase. First the chamber of commerce appointed a committee to it contributions for such purchase, nothing was doing. Several gen-ten appointed upon the committee needed to serve in that capacity. Then chamber of commerce resolved to the matter up to the citizens, and meeting was held at the city hall a ago Monday evening at which a committee was appointed to solicit money for purchasing the lot. Nothing seems to have arisen a con-able degree of feeling over the situation of the lot. Several lots were used and the water board finally se-ced the Hart lot as being the best, things considered, for its purposes. Anyone with half an eye can see that he has been little if any response to calls for funds on the part of the place. Threats, on the part of some, drove the headquarters to Fullerton not seem to budge them, and the matter seems to have entered a lock.
Saturday afternoon a meeting of interested in the site was held, which it was resolved to take mined to carry this work to a finish. There is money enough here, and there should be public spirit enough to wind this thing up in twenty-four hours."
Electric Railway Lines
Jacob Stern was in town the first of the week and in conversation with a representative of this paper said the people of Anaheim and Fullerton will probably soon have an opportunity of showing Mr. Huntington what they can do in the right-of-way line. Mr. Stern is securing right of way for the electric line through La Habra to Richfield, and has the entire deal about closed up. Only two or three pieces remain to be secured, and these, he says, will probably be condemned.
“If material could be procured,” he said, “cars would be running into Richfield in three months. It is difficult to obtain material, but Mr. Huntington will push work on the line with all possible despatch.
“This line,” he said in reply to a question, “will continue up River canyon to Riverside.
“Mr. Huntington is gridironing Southern California with his electric lines, and your people at Anaheim and Fullerton may soon have a chance to show the railway magnate what you can do in the matter of granting right of way for an electric line. That line
Saturday afternoon a meeting of interested in the site was held, which it was resolved to take over up this week or next and attempt to raise the money required. Oneerty-owner pledged his check for and two others are said to have pledged the same amount. There are ten or a dozen property owners vitally interested in securing site for a headquarters office for water company," said a well-known on Monday. "Some of these, and I doubt not will, contribute Others will give half this amount, and others $100.
