MANY WELL PITS CAVE IN Rising Surface Water Crushes in Eggshell Pits, and Pumping Plants are Abandoned. A report prevailed in town yesterday that thirty-four electrical pumping plants were out of commission on account of more or less serious cave-ins. There are hundreds of pumping plants operated by gasoline engines and many of these have been destroyed. Many well pits are so badly caved in that the pump and pit will have to be abandoned. In one large well pit two miles southeast of town the pumping apparatus is buried under fifty feet of debris, the entire pit having caved in. The cave-ins are occasioned by the rise of the surface water about the pits. This rise has been from 12 to 50 feet in wells in different parts of the valley. In the well on the Neff ranch southwest of town the rise has been thirteen feet. Water now stands at a depth of forty feet from the surface, whereas a year ago it stood 53 feet deep. Mr. Neff's pit is 40 feet deep. In the Wagner well on the east side days to stop the flow of water the sump-hole into the pit. I have advisedously against these thin casings very well they would not stand the pressure of rising. A well on the east side caved in to a depth of 75 feet be abandoned. Another well is caved in to a depth of 80 will also be abandoned. South of town one of the pumping plants is buried up feet of debris. There are upward of 400 we pumping plants in a radius of from Anaheim. A recent b the geological survey gives the credit of operating more the entire pit having caved in. Water has risen from that depth to its present level of 38 feet. Both the Neff and Wagner well pits are intact, having solid concrete casings. At the city power house surface water stands in the wells at a depth of 52 feet. The well pit is 43 feet in depth. It was built in 1897 to a depth of 24 feet. At that time great trouble was experienced with surface water which rose to a depth of eight feet or more in the pit. This water had to be pumped and the contractors tried for TEL. NEW CITY WELL PIT CAVES IN Two Men Narrowly Escape Entombment by Crouching Under Falling Timbers Near Pipes. The city well pit being excavated by Emmett & Dyer at the site of the new power house on Los Angeles street, south of Santa Ana street, experienced a bad cave in on Monday morning at 11 o'clock. The pit had been excavated to a depth of 26 feet, when the east side collapsed, crashing through the thin wooden casing, and filling the pit to a depth of twelve feet. Two men, Jesse Wilson and John Rothe, were at work at the bottom of the pit, and narrowly escaped with their lives. Had it not been for the two well pipes, which still stand in the pit, they would probably have been buried. Wilson saw the sand caving, and sprang between the two big upright pipes. Rothe followed immediately after. The boards composing the "form" encircling the pit to a distance of 16 feet from the surface fell in a litter about them. The sand having given way at the base of the east side, the entire east wall fell in. Wilson succeeded in getting out unin his cool head and promptly sisting his men, proba were averted. Work upon the well pit slow progress for a month an 18-foot curbing of inches thick, had to be taken out. The contract have this casing sunk as ened, but found it refus lodged after settling to a feet. After the cement cas taken out, a wooden "for the pit, which is ten feet to a depth of 16 feet. MAY 2, 1907 NUMBER 28 FUNDS COMING IN SLOWLY Semi-Centennial Executive Committee Calls for Larger Subscriptions, or Celebration Will Be Called Off A meeting of the executive committee having in charge the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of this city was held at the chamber of commerce on Tuesday evening. There were present Chairman H. M. Adams, Secretary Ahlborn, H. A. Dickel, J. F. Walker, J. S. Howard, Frank Baum and Herman Stern. Mr. Dickel reported that he had interviewed a number of the business firms in town and had secured promises of $50 each for the celebration. He was of opinion these should be raised to $100 donations. He started out with the purpose of raising $2000 in cash, but felt that $1200 would be about the limit. Yet even with this sum, he favored going ahead with the celebration. Six years ago the town had a hair-raising Fourth of July celebration for $750, and with the increased sum this year we ought to be able to celebrate the semi-centennial. For a pit 56 feet deep.
