ORANGES CLIMBING UP. The weather in the East has been cold and stormy all through the past week and the supply of oranges has been the heaviest of the season, yet prices have been maintained and are much higher than at this time last season. Orders are coming in plentifully, in fact, more than can be supplied during the present car shortage. Many firms are using box cars for the coast and Texas and some are going to try cattle cars for Eastern points. There are said to be 2000 refrigerator cars this side of El Paso, Ogden and Portland. With the Salt Lake line open and the Espee exerting itself strenuously to move freight over the Valley line, a good supply of these cars should reach Southern California soon. The present period could stand at least 175 cars a day for the balance of this month and even later. For the first ten days of the present month there were shipped 1449 cars of oranges and lemons, which is an average of 145 cars a day. Up to the present time there have been 13,639 cars of oranges and 1360 cars of lemons shipped, against 15,713 oranges and 1596 cars of lemons in 1906. The shipments for the year 1905 were away ahead of these figures, showing 17,658 cars of oranges and 1344 cars of lemons. This shows that California is now more than 2000 cars behind the season of 1906, and nearly 3000 cars behind the shipments of 1905. No perceptible gain is being made to offset this and the question is, is there to be between 2000 and 3000 cars left in California at a time when the navel seasin is ordinarily over? Some shippers hold that, even if this is the case all of the fruit finally will be marketed and simply that it will be a case of extending the season. There has been no puffing or splitting and the weather so far has been very cool, so that the fruit is in fine condition to stand up much later than common. All this may be true, but the extra large-sized and over-ripe navels will certainly have a hard row to hoe against seedlings, bloods, St. Michaels Some shippers hold that, even if this is the case all of the fruit finally will be marketed and simply that it will be a case of extending the season. There has been no puffing or splitting and the weather so far has been very cool, so that the fruit is in fine condition to stand up much later than common. All this may be true, but the extra large-sized and over-ripe navels will certainly have a hard row to hoe against seedlings, bloods, St. Michaels and early Valencias, which are all right as to sizes, to say nothing of strawberries and other small fruits, peaches, etc., whihc will all be clamoring for public attention. The saving of the situation would be the supply of 175 cars a day from now up to May 1, for while prices would be much lower than at present, it would mean that the fruit could all be moved while it was in good condition and would no doubt bring the shipper a very fair average of profit. The May shipments for last year were but 101 cars a day, oranges and lemons, and an increase this coming May to 175 cars a day would easily take care of the 2000 cars behind at this time. Seedlings are coming along finely and there is every prospect of a record-breaking year in this variety of the orange. At present prices are very high because of the fact that sizes are more nearly what the trade wants than is the case with the navels. Bloods and Sweets are also commanding more than ordinary attention and high prices are the rule. A few cars of St. Michaels are showing up at auction points, and as this fruit is popular with many on account of its very thin skin, it is being well received. It is a little early for California grapefruit. It does not compare with the Florida article and it is too near the close of the Florida season for grapefruit lovers to take kindly to the California pomelo at high prices. Lemons are way up in the air, and going higher. At Tuesday's sale of foreign lemons the bidding was very spirited and fancy 300s sold from $3.90 to $4.05 with seconds at from $3.75 to $3.85. At the Cleveland auction Friday, California lemons reached the high figure of $5 per box. The growing popularity of the California lemon over its foreign rival has led to radical changes in the manner of packing Sicilian fruit. Henceforth there will be fruit of uniform pack and in standard boxes, provided the interior buyers will stand on their rights and insist on holding the Sicily growers in line. Every box of MRS. That information is essential to the sale working of placer deposits always fully realized, and the it has often been responsible for financial failure of enterprises promised success. Need funds and time necessarily need the investigations to a completely small area, and the Nome of Seward Peninsula was sebecause of its extensive mining sites. Stream-flow data were collected at 45 stations, and a careful was made of the conditions affording water supply. It is believed that data obtained, while far from live, give a fair idea of the cone of flow that may be expected vicinity of the gaging stations, but they will prove valuable in giving stream flow in other parts region. Result of the great value of the for use in the auriferous gravit-power possibilities on theola have been neglected; but development of a large number of power sites is feasible both in engineering and a financial point, and the attention of mines is directed to such development. The report summarizes the hydraulic development of the region, and is a much needed warning on construction and installation of intensive machinery without the necessary preliminary investigation engineering advice. Report may be obtained free of charge by applying to the Director of United States Geological Survey, ington, D. C. Student Roosevelt, a short time named a commission to prepare an intensive plan for the improvement of the waterways of the country. and report same to him for presentation at the next session of congress. This committee is expected to report upon a comprehensive plan for the fullest development and control of the river systems of the country. It is significant of its breadth of purpose that among the members of this commission are Hon. Theodore E. Burton of Ohio, chairman of the house committee on rivers and harbors; Hon. Gifford Pinchot at the head of the forest service of the United State, and Hon. F. H. Newell, director of the U. S. reclamation service. The appointment of this commission indicates an early movement in the direction of correlation of the various lines of government work affecting the watersheds and streams of the country, and the addition of other important work not now undertaken under national supervision. Recognizing the appointment of this commission as a most important step in the direction of broad national policies, such as have long been urged in the annual meetings of the national irrigation congress, the officials of the fifteenth national irrigation congress have invited the members of the commission to attend the session to be held in Sacramento next fall, and to take part in the program. Mr. Burton, chairman of the commission, is now on the isthmus, but is expected to return within a short time.
