William L. Oge was a business visitor in town from Los Angeles on Tuesday. Mr. Oge in 1874 purchased an extensive tract of land near Olive, and subsequently sold a half interest to Col. Bond of Santa Barbara. The holding was known as the Oge and Bond tract, and the name is yet seen on deeds to property located therein. He is at present in the school supply business, and contemplates bringing out a new creation of his Picturesque California, which he is now engaged in editing. The first edition of this work was brought out early in the 80's.
Gus Thomas, who lives on West street, is defendant in a battery charge preferred against him by Gus Schifferdecker, who until recently regarded himself as a prospective son-in-law to the man against whom he lodges complaint. Schifferdecker was engaged to marry Miss Lena Thomas, the pretty adopted daughter of defendant, and the wedding was scheduled to take place two weeks ago. The would-be groom is said to have gone to the residence of his inamorata the afternoon of the battery, and to have acted unkindly toward her. In fact, it is said a felony charge may be made out against him. Lena told her father about it, and Thomas got on his bicycle and followed Schifferdecker. He overtook him as the latter was hurrying to town, and is said to have administered a severe beating to the youth. The latter's arm was broken, and one report has it that if bystanders had not pulled Thomas off, the coroner might have had a case to sit on. The parties to the suit will tell Judge Howard all about it in court on Tuesday next.

Fred Staublin, a native of Jennings county, Ind., aged 36 years, committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart with a shotgun about 10 o'clock Saturday morning near the Tustin junction of the Southern Pacific. The body lay close to the railroad track and the crew of the northbound local discovered the corpse and sent word to a nearby neighbor who notified the authorities and the body was removed to Backs' undertaking parlors. Staublin left a note saying he had been crazy for twenty years and that he killed himself. Neighbors noticed that he was in a despondent mood for several weeks past, his trouble being aggravated by the fact that his sister had recently been committed to an asylum. Deceased had been for several years in the employ of Otto Rust. About a year ago he quit his job and purchased a small ranch southeast of town where he had resided up to the time of his suicide. The remains were interred on Monday afternoon, services being held in the German-Methodist church.

A suit to test the Vrooman act procedure in this city has been brought in the superior court by Clarence Groat against Isidore Dockweiler. A sidewalk and curb were laid in front of certain pieces of property belonging to Dockweiler in 1904, and the assessment of $33.78 on the lot has never been paid.
The proceedings that resulted in the laying of the sidewalk were commenced by the city council of Anaheim in September, 1904, and the contract for sidewalking Hedwig street between Center and Sycamore streets was let to him for $1823.24. The assessment on the property owned by Dockweiler was $33,73. There is very likely to be an interesting contest in this case. A similar fight was made in Santa Ana in the superior court in Carnahan vs. Clapp, the judgment in the superior court being in favor of the plaintiff, the contractor. That case is to be taken to the supreme court.
