OHIO BRINGS SCALE PESTS Mr. Carnes Throws Overboard a Consignment of Fruit, Cocoanuts, Plants, Ferns, Shrubbery, Scale Infested Deputy State Horticultural Commissioner E. K. Carnes, who is temporarily stationed here with the state insectary, intercepted the steamer Ohio at San Pedro on Sunday afternoon, and between the hours of 2 and 7, chopped up and threw overboard a miscellaneous collection of scale infested tropical plants and fruits brought over from Honolulu by a party of Los Angeles excursionists. The Ohio carried a number of ladies and gentlemen, chaperoned by Frank Wiggins, of the Los Angeles chamber of commerce. The boat departed for the islands, carrying 250 people, early in February. The steamer touched port on her homeward trip on Sunday evening, after Mr. Carnes and Mr. Wiggins had had a passage at arms concerning the consignment, and after a wait of five hours during which time the onslaught upon the scale-infested plants continued. Among the articles thrown overboard were oranges, alligator pears, pineapples, cocoanuts, palms, ferns, plants and shrubbery of many descriptions. All were badly infested with scale pests which the state board has been hitherto successful in keeping out of the state. In the collection was a large coffin-shaped box containing specimens of cocoanut palms just out is one of the objects of the board of horticulture, quite as to make warfare upon those no our gates. All were badly infested with scale pests which the state board has been hitherto successful in keeping out of the state. In the collection was a large coffin-shaped box containing specimens of cocoanut palms just sprouted from clusters of cocoanuts, which were intended for exhibition purposes at the Los Angeles chamber of commerce. The plants on being opened were found to be badly scaled. Mr. Carnes, who had been carrying on his work for some time, informed Mr. Wiggins his coffin-shaped box and its contents would have to go overboard. Mr. Wiggins protested that the plants in the box had been passed by Alexander Craw. "You can't tell me Alexander Craw passed these plants," warmly responded Mr. Carnes; "I don't believe he ever saw them." Mr. Wiggins finally consented to the destruction of his prized collection of palms and new scale pests. One man with a sample lot of cocoanuts made a vigorous kick against the destruction of what he called "his property." "I don't see what harm would come from my taking those nuts home to the kids. I haven't any trees, and the scale will not damage any one." "Just such importations," replied Mr. Carnes in a fatherly sort of way, "have cost the state of California hundreds of thousands of dollars. The scale upon these cocoanuts if permitted to obtain lodgment in the state would cause losses probably to the extent of millions of dollars." The cocoanuts went overboard. The consignment was pitched into the sea at a point some distance off the breakwater. Mr. Carnes went out with the quarantine officer, but did not go aboard until the vessel had been passed upon by that official. He remained on the launch two hours, his light craft tossing upon the waves like a chip. On boarding the Ohio he caused consternation among the passengers by declaring that all scale-infested fruit, plants and shrubbery would have to be refused permission to 11. Commenting editorially Chandler's letter the Brookdale says: A HUMILIATING REVEAL The impressive array of the sea at a point some distance on the breakwater. Mr. Carnes went out with the quarantine officer, but did not go aboard until the vessel had been passed upon by that official. He remained on the launch two hours, his light craft tossing upon the waves like a chip. On boarding the Ohio he caused consternation among the passengers by declaring that all scale-infested fruit, plants and shrubbery would have to be refused permission to land. Some of the palms were four feet high and with spreading branches, costing probably $7 50 each. Of these larger specimens there were thirty. The ferns were new and beautiful specimens, but carried new and dangerous scale pests. A number of packages which bore the endorsement of Alexander Craw, as having been inspected by him, were passed and were subsequently landed. Mr. Maskew was with Mr. Carnes at San Pedro several days looking for the Ohio, which was three days overdue, but was on Sunday temporarily absent at his home near Long Beach. Mr. Maskew made two trips outside in a launch on reports that the Ohio had been sighted. These reports proved to be erroneous, the incoming vessels being other craft. At noon Sunday the excursion ship was sighted off the port, bound in. Mr. Carnes and his force of assistants went out in the quarantine officer's launch and during the afternoon be tossed overboard one of the largest consignments of tropical fruits, plants, ferns and shrubbery, as it was one of the worst infested with dangerous scale pests, that ever approached the coast of California. As local growers understand, while California harbors a limited number of dangerous scale pests, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of others quite as destructive, if not indeed more so, than the foreigners now sojourning here. To keep these strangers A HUMILIATING REVEAL The impressive array of presented by Mr. Chandler on the work the state of Ohio doing in the suppression insects shows that Massachusetts much to learn from a sister only this, but this state must entirely new course with the gypsy and brown tail due humility we in New York must now recognize that we outdone in scientific skill ofific Coast.
