Gypsy and Brown-Tail Moths Considerable correspondence has been carried on between the horticultural commissioner of this state and prominent parties interested in checking the ravages of the gypsy and brown-tail moths in Massachusetts, and it is due to the fruit-growers of California that some information in regard to the matter should be given them. The terrible ravages of the gypsymoth are generally well known to our fruit-growers, and its history from its first introduction up to the present time is not unfamiliar. The outbreak of this fearful pest was due to the escape of one female moth which had been introduced into Malden, Massachusetts, by an enthusiastic but careless entomologist, who little realized the extent of the damage that could be done by one insect. Its increase was noted after several years, although little attention was paid to it until it became a really serious pest, when public attention was directed thereto and an effort made to get rid of it. Extermination work was commenced in Massachusetts in 1890, and continued for ten years, during which period over $1,000,000 was expended in fighting this pest alone; but all that was accomplished by artificial means was to curtail the area of infestation to some extent and prevent its spread to new sections. The continual cost of fighting this pest and the small results accomplished by the means employed led to considerable dissatisfaction among the tax the gypsy-moth commission availed itself of all known means—spraying, burning, hand-picking, and even method—to check the spread pests; but in neither case were successful, and in 1900 the priation for fighting the brown-moth was discontinued with the gypsy-moth. Since the insect has spread rapidly southeastern New Hampshire, New Brunswick, and where in the New England and has become even more object of dread among the turists than the gypsy-moth. This, as stated before, is a E species, and in Europe he known from time immemorial has never been reported as serious plague, nor has it creased with the alarming or in such vast numbers as its New England home—sufficient to indicate that some natural check working. In the fighting of this with the gypsy-moth, the assistance of the Californian mission of Horticulture were and a voluminous corresponde was carried on between Massachusetts and this officie thereto, until finally an order made to search for, secure a produce an effective parasite of these pests for a specified sufficient to cover the cost labor performed. This was the theory that it is far better check a pest while it is still itited area and can be handled comparative ease and effect. for ten years, during which period over $1,000,000 was expended in fighting this pest alone; but all that was accomplished by artificial means was to curtail the area of infestation to some extent and prevent its spread to new sections. The continual cost of fighting this pest and the small results accomplished by the means employed led to considerable dissatisfaction among the tax payers of Massachusetts, and as a result the legislature ceased to make appropriations for the work and it was abandoned. With the abandonment of the work the moth began to increase with alarming rapidity, and the legislature was again compelled to take the matter in hand and in 1905 made an appropriation of $300,000 for the purpose of seeking remedies or means of extermination, the work being placed under the superintendency of A. H. Kirkland. This pest is now found throughout the whole of the eastern portion of Massachusetts, southeastern New Hampshire, and a region in and about Providence, Rhode Island. It has been reported several times from Connecticut, and is gradually spreading in all directions. As a result of the inefficiency of artificial methods in checking the pest, interested parties in Massachusetts applied to the commission of horticulture of California to ascertain the possibility of securing and introducing parasites which will work upon it. This commission has never doubted that effective parasites could be found and secured. The moth has been known in Europe from time immemorial. It has been observed in England on several occasions, and while on the continent it sometimes appears in large numbers, it as invariably disappears and can not be counted a serious pest even where it is the most prevalent. In England it has never obtained a foothold in spite of numerous introductions. The moth is also known in other parts of the world, where tive thereto, until finally an order made to search for, secure and produce an effective parasite for these pests for a specified sufficient to cover the cost labor performed. This was due to the theory that it is far better check a pest while it is still inited area and can be handled comparative ease and effect but which is threatening to until it might possibly reach a state, than to wait until gained a foothold here and covered vast amount of damage. While two such pests as the der consideration are ravaged large area in New England, all the trouble seems to be very to California, there is still that specimens may be brought our own state. It has been observed in England on several occasions, and while on the continent it sometimes appears in large numbers, it as invariably disappears and can not be counted a serious pest even where it is the most prevalent. In England it has never obtained a foothold in spite of numerous introductions. The moth is also known in other parts of the world, where it has never been considered a pest and is unquestionably kept below the danger limit by some natural enemy. A second pest, closely allied to the gypsy-moth, and commonly known as the brown-tail moth, was also introduced into Massachusetts some years ago, and while not so well known to our readers as the gypsy-moth, it has spread with greater rapidity and threatens to be an even greater pest in the sections infested by it than has been the gypsy-moth. This insect was first introduced into Somerville, Massachusetts, early in the past decade, and was supposed to be a native species, but the rapidity of its increase, and the fact that there was apparently no natural check upon it, led to an investigation and it was discovered that it is a European species probably introduced into the new world by accident. The knowledge of the devastation wrought by the gypsy-moth led to a special appropriation being made for the fighting of the brown-tail moth also, which was placed in the hands of CATARRH ELY'S CREAM BALM This Remedy is a Specific, Sure to Give Satisfaction. The Former Are Beneficial, but the Latter Are Dangerous. By a draft is meant the currents of air in an inclosed space. Our forefathers attributed nearly all the evils that beset them to drafts, and they would not have slept in uncurtained beds for anything. Of course their windows and doors were shaky, and houses stood far apart, so drafts were nearly inevitable. But the modern scientific world tries to deny drafts altogether and calls them winds, which are harmless and even healthy to a certain degree. Any one who cares to find out the difference between a wind and a draft can do so in any apartment which has windows on different sides of the house. Let him open a window on a windy day on the side of the house toward which the wind blows. The air which comes in is quite harmless if the person exposed to it be dressed in warm clothes, and little children may take the air in a room thus ventilated. But let him open a window past which the wind blows, and it will be found that the air in the room is moved by a number of currents, all of which strive to reach the opening. It is the passing wind which sucks up the air in the room and draws it out, and this causes the room to have what is called a draft. The effect upon sensitive persons is immediately felt, like the forerunner of pain to come. A draft will always be felt as colder than the wind. Very dangerous drafts are those that are produced in railway cars by the rapid motion of the train. It is not wind that gets into the carriages, but the air of the car which is sucked out. A lighted match held to the chink of the window will prove this, as the flame will be drawn toward the window, not blown from it. “The Bridge” Born of Sorrow. E. W. "My poem entitled 'The Bridge,'" said Longfellow, "was written in sorrow, which made me feel for the loneliness of others. I was a widower at the time, and I used sometimes to go over the bridge to Boston evenings to meet friends and return near midnight by the same way. The way was silent, save here and there a belated footstep. The sea rose or fell among the wooden piers, and there was a great furnace on the Brighton hills whose red light was reflected by the waves. It was on such a late, solitary walk that the spirit of the poem came upon me. The bridge has been greatly altered, but the place of it is the same." English Cookery. French cookery came from Italy, but long before France attained any distinction English cooking was spoken of as the best in Europe. After the reign of Henry VIII, soups and fish fell into general disuse, and larger quantities of meat occupied their place. "In the reign of James II, cookery had fallen to its lowest depth. It revived a little in the reigns of Anne and George I., degenerated again in the reigns of George II. and III., until at last English cooking was little better than that of the ancient Britons." Those numerous sun spots will come in handy to explain anything that happens next summer. ENTER Market carries a choice line of fish and Salt Meats KLEMENT, Prop.
