The mint in San Francisco was saved from the great fire of last April because of two wells in the back yard. Water enough was pumped from them to check the flames that several times started on the building. Recently the pumps were removed from these wells and the interesting discovery was made that the earthquake had changed them into artesian wells. It had always been found necessary to pump them before in order to get water, but now they flow freely. Evidently some subterranean sources of supply had been disturbed by the quake.
