It is hoped the city council will grant the association permission to build a dyke across the city's land at that point. The city has objected to becoming a party to the matter for fear that the building of the dyke might turn the waters of the river in such fashion that the city would become responsible for damage done. One county bridge and several telegraph poles were burned in a fire which for a time threatened destruction of the town of San Juan. The fire was sweeping through a cornfield when several men with buckets of water from an irrigation ditch stopped its progress in that direction. This was east of the town. The fire swept a territory fifteen miles in length and five miles wide. The Mission Viejo ranch, owned by Richard O'Neal, suffered most. A tremendous foothill fire had been sweeping down from Trabuco canyon toward the town of San Juan Capistrano all the afternoon. Its path was four or five miles wide and it was fanned by the strong north wind. The grass and brush was as dry as tinder and the wind carried burning brush hundreds of yards at a time. The fire fighters had a tremendous task in front of them. Canuto Hernandez, a Mexican cholo, is in the county jail where he was placed Monday morning by Constable Swartont and William McFadden of San Juan Capistrano. Hernandez while drunk Sunday night slashed J. B. Stephenson, a federal fire guard on the Trabuco forest preserve, and an ex-Stanford football player. Hernandez tried to force his way into a private dance at the mission town and was stopped by Stephenson. The cholo took this as an insult and as Stephenson was advising him to go home, Hernandez drew a sharp pocket knife and before Stephenson knew that he was being attacked the knife had slashed him in five different places. With a blow from his fist Stephenson knocked Santa Ana Daily R GREAT BARGAIN DAY A Santa Ana and Los Angeles Daily Paper for Four Dollars a Year We make Money You Save Money A Really & Truly Case of Something for Nothing the Register at least $2 per annum on the average to secure, hold and cos, book-keepers and circulation manager, on the average, for each subsney and enable the Register to save part of it?
