LIQUOR CASE IN COURT
A jury in Justice Howard's court on Tuesday, after deliberating an hour and a half, found F. Conrad guilty of seeling liquor at his Adele street establishment, when his license had been changed to his new Center street place. Conrad admitted selling the liquor, which was a case of beer disposed of to Billy Berdrow, but claimed that he was given permission to sell liquor at his Adele-street place for a reasonable time, pending removal to his new place on Center street.
T. A. Darling and L. Kroeger, members of the board of city trustees, testified that the board had informally discussed the matter of permitting Conrad to dispose of liquor at his place on Adele street for a reasonable length of time until he could move to Center street. They personally favored giving him a reasonable length of time in which to move.
C. O. Rust, chairman of the city board of trustees, testified that Darling and Kroeger had discussed the matter at the board's meeting, and that he had understood Conrad would be given a reasonable time in which to move.
Trustees Fiscus and Stock testified they had understood that when the li-

Trustees Fiscus and Stock testified they had understood that when the license for the Adele-street place was revoked, it terminated Conrad's right to sell liquor at that place.
F. Conrad, testifying in his own behalf, said he was given permission to sell liquor at his Adele-street place until he could move. He had a license covering the period during which the liquor was sold. This was produced in evidence. He positively denied ever making the statement that unless the board granted him a license he would sell liquor without it. He had made

endeavor to secure a place inside wholesale liquor limits after being led by the board to move, and had one place; but before signing it another party stepped in and did it. He then rented the Kroe-building and it was necessary to partitions and paint the interior he could move in. During his time he had a wholesale liquor store, and he understood he would be asked to sell liquor at his old place available time until moving into the house for Conrad pointed out that Conrad had evidently been laid out for attack by a certain unpower which offered immunity to wholesale liquor dealers now opening places outside the wholesale zone. Why persecute this man, had done no wrong, he asked, and other wholesalers maintain their claim in the prohibited zone? Conrad is led arbitrarily to move inside this and while making every effort so, he is arrested, while other salers operating their places out this zone are altogether unmoved.
What is this unseen power offers them immunity and harms this man? He claimed there was intent to commit a crime on Conrad. He had secured and had for a license, and was making effort to move to his new place a verdict of guilty. For an hour or more they stood evenly divided, but as supper time came on they came to an agreement and Conrad was found guilty.
Attorney for Conrad gave notice of appeal to the superior court.
Olinda Precinct Returns
For several days after the election rumors were current that the returns from Olinda precinct would be thrown out on account of illegality. That these rumors were altogether idle was shown on Monday when the board of supervisors, which began the work of canvassing the returns on that day, approved the Olinda returns without question.
Supervisor Linebarger's majority in the district is 34. Olinda gave him a majority of 77. If the precinct should have been thrown out, it would have resulted in the election of Dutton.
Rogers Williams, chairman of the republican county central committee, watched the progress of the canvass, and said on Monday afternoon that the returns from Olinda came in better prepared than those of any precinct canvassed that day.
Joe Burke and other republicans of Olinda when called up when the rumors first made their appearance, stoutly averred the reports were unfounded.
"Not a word of truth in it," said Co. E's High Capt. Herman Sterling from headquarters the annual inspection company, which placed front ranks of all the state. The rating is an attendance at muster and inspection. Promptness at roll call and company exercises. Discipline. Military appearance. Condition of arms. Condition of equipment. Condition of clothing. Condition of records. Company movement. Manual of arms and other exercises.
Total.
It will be seen that muster and inspection condition of equipment perfect, being credited "excellent," which means the total, 95.8 per cent high, and shows the company every way in first-class.
The company winning the second brigade attests percentage of 92.73, two points below the local rate of Company E, per centage attained in the state last year.

Up Salt River
This year's expedition up Salt River will leave promptly on time, if not sooner, and will be largely attended, enjoyable and instructive from start to finish. The party will be in charge of Commodore George Dutton, who will explain to the gathering the advantages, from a political standpoint, of living in Anaheim rather than in Buena Park, especially when the supervisorial nomination is conceded (by whom it is not authoritatively known) to the former place. Rear Admiral Potter will be guest of honor, and will tell the boys all about the wicked city of Santa Ana, and how many blindpigs he and Jim McFadden can count together. Bos'n Walker will dance a hornpipe, and write two articles for the newspapers, one telling the people all about that pledge-card business, and the other telling them what the devil a qualifying clause means. This will be important, for we are all in the dark concerning it.
The party will also contain Pink Undershirt Robinson, No-Nomination-Trap Head, Boy Orator Ames, Soldier Boy Finley, Zellian, Menges and all the rest of the defeated democratic candidates. Round-trip tickets on application to Frank Vegely, Santa Ana.

Long Beach Horror
The new Hotel Bixby in course of erection at Long Beach was the scene on Friday morning last of the killing of eleven men by the collapse of a portion of the structure. Telephone reports were to the effect that the foundation of the hotel had given way because of quicksand, and that probably the whole structure would fall. Reports in the daily press, always greatly exaggerated to aid in selling papers, were absurdly magnified, when a truthful story of the accident might have tended to allay the uneasiness everywhere apparent.
Thousands visited the scene of the partially wrecked building on Sunday, many being from this county.
The loss of life was of course the most deplorable circumstance connected with the disaster, but visitors were quite surprised to find the hotel standing almost entirely intact. The east and west parts of the building are not damaged, and probably half of the connecting portion of the edifice is destroyed. The wreck was caused by the removal of supports from steel girders resting upon green cement. Estimates of the amount of damage ran as high as $100,000, but the amount will probably not exceed $25,000.
The hotel is situated up on the beach three blocks west of the pier, and will when completed cost $300,000. Many workmen were employed upon it at the time of the accident, and it was expected it would be ready for occupancy by the first of the year.
Work upon the hotel will be prosecuted with vigor and it will probably be completed early in the new year.
Co. E's High Standing
apt. Herman Stern has received from headquarters the report of the usual inspection and muster of his company, which places it in the very high ranks of all the companies in the state. The rating is as follows:

The company winning the trophy in the second brigade attained a total percentage of 92.73, two per cent below the rating of Company E, and the highest percentage attained by any company the state last year was 95.6, two points below the local company.

Company E will entertain friends at a smoker this (Thursday) evening after drill. Invitations are out for the function, which promises to be a swell affair. The committee asks each one to bring along a story.
Enjoyable Entertainment
The entertainment given by the Council of Knights of Columbus at Odd Fellows' hall on Wednesday evening of last week was the most enjoyable heard here this season. J. T. Shea acted as master of ceremonies and arranged a program replete with clever performances. The piano playing of the Misses Rimpau was one of the best numbers, while the singing of the Misses Kennedy and Mrs. Carroll evoked loud applause. Mr. Dickel never sang better and had to respond to an encore.
Miss May Callahan of Los Angeles, niece of Mr. Shea, captivated the audience with her singing. Miss Callahan sings at the cathedral and has a rich soprano voice of rare power and flexibility.
Rev. Father Dubbel delivered an interesting address, coupled with witty

The complete report of companies in the second brigade has not yet been received, and until its arrival it will be definitely known which company wins the trophy, but if any one company E it will have to show exceedingly favorable record. The complete list will probably arrive this week or next.
In view of this favorable report of Company E Capt. Stern and his officers and men are entitled to the congratulations of the entire community. The company is an honor to the state Capt. Stern solicits members from young men in town and surrounding country. Parents should urge their sons to join. The military instruction which they will receive will benefit to them their entire life. We advise every young man in town to make application to join. They will never regret it. It will be the making of many of them.
