Time to take a Little Recreation See the Santa Fe Agent WASHINGTON CHAT [CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE] Washington, D.C., Nov. 5. Compared to the great exodus of clerks during previous elections, few government employees in Washington will journey to their respective homes this year to exercise the right of citizenship. The principal reason for the number being so small is because the railroad corporations have not granted reduced rates except to cover eastern states and even to these, the reduction is exceedingly slight. Voters whose homes are west of the Ohio river will be compelled to pay almost the full fare both ways. This action of the railroad companies is unusual, especially in view of the fact that this is the first year that passes have not been obtainable, thus practically assuring a good revenue from the throng of employees who would go, were the rates reasonable. Both political parties have brought all kinds of pressure to bear on transportation officials in order to secure the old-time concessions, but a deaf ear has been turned to all their pleadings. The leaders are still hard at work in the matter and feel that something may yet result to "help the cause" in the different states. It was an odd looking delegation of Apache Indians that crowded the waiting room of Secretary of War Taft's office on Wednesday. They were there in the hope of seeing that official to plead with him for the return of their tribe to the happy appointed and now the question "are the storks really coming?" These two birds, so the arrival in New York from about ten days ago and are close to President Roosevelt, Wash. D.C., but as to who sent one seems to know. Some are the gift of the German while others claim that some faderland admirer of the town is the donor. In either sending of these birds to tion's chief has but one meeting the customs of Germany, we express an invitation to them dent for him to visit Germany now or in the future. W twin storks finally arrived White House they will in ability be greatly admired and for a few days by the Roosevelt then sent to the national zoo park to be placed with the cows, coons, pea fowls and other animals that have been sent to the president from time. The famous "poison squaw daring body of men, who six months on food season borax and other acids, and w in charge of Prof. Wiley, ch ist of the agricultural depot will not hold a candle to thous life that will be led by them joined the latest classized by the professor to do whether alcoholic liquors a terous to the human stomach how the test will be made been divulged, but that they a popular one is shown by the matter and feel that something may yet result to "help the cause" in the different states. It was an odd looking delegation of Apache Indians that crowded the waiting room of Secretary of War Taft's office on Wednesday. They were there in the hope of seeing that official to plead with him for the return of their tribe to the happy hunting grounds from which they were removed twenty years ago. The secretary was busy at the White House when they called, so the visitors squated in real Indian fashion and kept watch, as it were, for the return of the heap big chief, but as the time passed and he failed to appear, they grew restless, walking around the room, yawning and making queer noises in their native tongue. They represented Apaches captured by Gen. Miles in New Mexico and by him removed to Indian Territory, where they have had all the freedom they desire, except they are not allowed to return to the scene of their former misdeeds. They are virtually prisoners of war. Secretary Taft finally arrived and after listening to their tale of woe, promised to place the case before the great father in the White House. This seemed to satisfy them and they trudged out in single file, wrapped to the neck in their gaudy blankets. It has always been a problem for the postoffice department to easily and safely remove sacks of mail from fast moving trains. The plan long in use by railway postal employees is to toss the bag out of the car door. Sometimes it lands near the railroad station and at other times it is a hundred yards or more away. Frequently people have been injured from being struck by the flying bags, and often the bags are lost altogether. More than 100 inventions in the list of the agricultural department will not hold a candle to the ous life that will be led by the professor to determine whether alcoholic liquors are terous to the human stomach how the test will be made been divulged, but that the popular one is shown by the number of applications for ship. Another class soon to be formed one to determine whether fortured with saltpeter are haunted by the stomach. Twelve subjew wanted for this class, but so have been found who are willing fill their systems with this drug both classes Prof. Wiley assistsplicants that no personal injury result from these experiments prove this cites the pleasingience of those who formed a poison squad. Still another test to be made by this note is in the near future, is that terminate the effect of tobacco on the heart. The professors pates no difficulty in securing to make this test as all the cigarettes, pipes and tobacco supplied free. Buying Fertilizers There is one reform that needed in the purchase of feeder and that is a change from most universal practice of buying flat ton rate. When feeder are bought on this basis, far ten pay practically the same for different fertilizers who positions necessarily make commercial values vary considerably and one may rest assured pays too much for the brand er brand of higher value brand or name stands for w manufacturer thinks is best for the crop for which the b intended, or else it stands for ed Beer the city. in use by railway postal employees is to toss the bag out of the car door. Sometimes it lands near the railroad station and at other times it is a hundred yards or more away. Frequently people have been injured from being struck by the flying bags, and often the bags are lost altogether. More than 100 inventions in the shape of arms to remove the bags as the train runs at high speed have been placed before the department during the past five years, but none have ever received a thorough test. It is for this reason that a special commission to examine and test the apparatus has been appointed by Postmaster General Cortleyou. The commission is composed of three Washington postal officials and postmasters from four large cities who will inspect inventions all over the country. It is thought possible that some of the contrivances may prove efficient in handling the bags, and if some lucky inventor hits it right, a fortune awaits him at the hands of Uncle Sam. As yet the twin storks—real live storks, have not made their expected visit to the White House, although they have been eagerly awaited for a week past. Every time an express wagon has been seen approaching the executive mansion, the employes rush to the door or windows, but each time they have been sadly dis- and now the question is, works really coming?" In either case, the of these birds to the naf has but one meaning in terms of Germany, which is to an invitation to the presimium to visit Germany either in the future. Just best will be made has not inged, but that the class is one is shown by the large ference) and one does not have to look very far to find that each party is interested in the material which he advocates. Still others will say that nonacidulated bone is the best form of phosphoric acid, and it would not be surprising to find that the dealer in this class finds greater profit in handling untreated bone, or else that he is not prepared to acidulate his materials. It is not intended to discuss here what materials are best suited for various crops under various conditiions, but to suggest to the buyers of fertilizers that they should know what they want and go to the fertilizer dealer to supply their wants. In short, it is intended to suggest to the farmer the advantages of buying fertilizing ingredients at a definite price per unit, instead of buying "brands" of fertilizers on the flat ton basis. The fertilizing ingredients may be bought in the unmixed materials, or they may be bought mixed in proportions which seem best suited to the farmer's need, but in either case the transaction should be on the unit basis. A unit of fertilizing ingredient is one per cent in a ton. Thus if nitrate of soda contains 15½ per cent of nitrogen, one ton contains 15½ units of nitrogen. In other words, the figures that are used in expressing the guaranteed analysis express the number of units in a ton of the material. Buying fertilizers on the unit basis means that the dealer must state how much he is charging per unit for available and insoluble phosphoric acid; how much he is charg- agricultural department, hold a candle to the strenuthat will be led by those who and the latest class organthe professor to determine alcoholic liquors are delethe human stomach. Still another unique made by this noted chemnear future, is that to deeffect of tobacco smoke art. The professor anticificiency in securing men this test as all the cigars, pipes and tobacco will be free. Buying Fertilizers one reform that is much the purchase of fertilizers, is a change from the alversal practice of buying on rate. When fertilizers not on this basis, farmers oftactically the same price fertilizers whose comcessarily make their comvalues vary considerably, may rest assured that he much for the brand of lowof higher value. The same stands for what the farmer thinks is best suited up for which the brand is or else it stands for what ton contains 15% units of nitrogen. In other words, the figures that are used in expressing the guaranteed analysis express the number of units in a ton of the material. Buying fertilizers on the unit basis means that the dealer must state how much he is charging per unit for available and insoluble phosphoric acid; how much he is charging per unit for total phosphoric acid; how much per unit for each form of nitrogen; and how much per unit for potash. This then puts the purchaser of fertilizers strictly on a competitive basis, and the buyer is at once able to say who is giving him plant food at the lowest price. It does away with all hidden virtues which lurk in the "so much per ton" mixed fertilizers. Of course through-out the transaction the farmer must not lose sight of the quality of the materials used and the mechanical condition of the fertilizer. If farmers would stand together, says a bulletin recently issued by the department of agriculture, University of California, in demanding this basis of dealing, it would be a very easy matter to obtain it. If the manufacturer objects to this plan, the farmer may remind him that it is the basis on which he buys his own materials. If it is good for the manufacturer, why is it not good for the farmer? The question is often asked, "is it better to buy mixed fertilizers, or to buy the materials and mix them on the farm?" The answer is very simple. If the manufacturer mixes them better and cheaper than the farmer can mix them, then buy them mixed. The question of cost of mixing can be determined by getting the cost of ingredients in the un-mixed materials and in the ready mixed fertilizers. All the materials which enter into the mixed fertilizers may be bought unmixed in the market. But in buying the unmixed materials care should always be exercised to obtain them in a finely ground condition. The same stands for what the farmer thinks is best suited for which the brand is or else it stands for what the manufacturer wishes the farmer to best suit for his crop, that the manufacturer may at best advantage to himizing materials on which corner, or which he can gain more favorable terms. It is too often the case immediate financial returns the agent's theory of fertility.
