A PLAIN STATEMENT In the closing days of the campaign we publish the following plain statement from a man who has lived amongst us for fifteen years, and who, before becoming a candidate for office, was probably the best liked man in this section. He was and still is a plain farmer, and is simply a man of the common people. Of a sudden he has been lied about and villified until his friends have raised their hands in protest. His political opponents have centered their fight against him, for the reason that their candidate has been hitherto thought to be invincible. The democratic sheriff of Orange county has been elected by republican votes in former campaigns, but he cannot acted in said Orange county due term of office. (Signed) Ed. TEDFORD, Prest A. J. McFADDEN, S Orange Co. Anti-Saloon L Does any republican vote himself a man ask for disproof of this awful against Walker—that he pledge to enforce the laws of the laws upon the statute Take these statements home you, Mr. Voter; think them If you think Walker is entitle your support, we have him that he will be glad to receive DUTTON FOR SUPERVI In the strenuous campaign which has been in progress district for some weeks paid important office of supervisor for some reason to have been looked. His political opponents have centered their fight against him, for the reason that their candidate has been hitherto thought to be invincible. The democratic sheriff of Orange county has been elected by republican votes in former campaigns, but he cannot hope to win a single republican voter to his support this year by such methods as his political lieutenants are pursuing. The calumnies circulated about the republican candidate for sheriff have been already referred to in these columns, some of them. The latest charge against him is that he signed an anti-saloon "pledge card," binding himself to enforce the laws against the illicit sale of liquor. Now, if S. O. Walker did sign this pledge card, we see no good reason why he should be crucified for it, for we confidently hope and expect he will carry out the laws, in spirit and in letter. If we did not so believe, we should not now be supporting him. But he did not sign the anti-saloon pledge card, nor any other document of similar purport. He did make the statement to the anti-saloon league that if elected he would enforce the laws, and all the laws, upon the statute books. He made this pledge to the convention which nominated him, and is all the more worthy of support because of it. Here is his plain statement to the people: As some people have misunderstood or misinterpreted the statement made by me in the Santa Ana newspapers of last Monday, my friends think I ought to make plainer what I intended and tried to say in that statement. It was this: That I regard myself as the nominee The Los Angeles Express, life long an Espee "push" now dominated by Earl of odious refrigerator car trust swung from its political mode and loses no opportunity offying the republican candidate governor. Several times of has declared Gillett's nomination was brought about by Ruef, it knows, or ought to know fectly well, that Ruef had no to do with Gillett's nomination than Mr. Earl did himself. No Ruef has come prominently in the people of the state as the of grafters, the Express shows red in the face in its decisions that Gillett is the creator Reuf, and is under the influence that arch rogue and corrupt Of course Mr. Earl knows not true. No one is deceived by it, but a brief review of facts hedging about the recent convention may be of interest. Ruef controlled 141 of the raff delegation from San Francisco and these votes, when Ruef found could not control the situation seeing that Gillett was about nominated without his assistance swung into line for Gillett, nothing to get behind a "dead on the person of Pardee. Pardee received 233½ vote the whole vote of San Francisco amounting to 159 votes had cast for Pardee against Gillett. Here is his plain statement to the people: As some people have misunderstood or misinterpreted the statement made by me in the Santa Ana newspapers of last Monday, my friends think I ought to make plainer what I intended and tried to say in that statement. It was this: That I regard myself as the nominee of the whole republican party, not of any faction or part of it—as has been reported by my democratic opponents. That I have made no pledges of any kind to anybody other than that made in the convention and repeatedly since the convention, and which I now reiterate, namely: That if elected I will enforce all laws regardless of friendship, party or politics. The misinterpretation or misunderstanding arises, no doubt, from the fact that my statement, as it appeared in print, was so punctuated as to make it appear that the qualifying clause was disconnected from and did not affect a part of what preceded it; whereas it was meant to qualify and in fact did qualify the whole. S. O. WALKER. The president and secretary of the anti-saloon league, both well-known gentlemen of Santa Ana, have issued the following statement: In order that our position in this matter may not be misunderstood, we desire to say that Mr. Walker has never made any pledge to us, nor, as far as we know, to any one else, other than he makes in substance in the foregoing statement, namely, that he will do all in his power, officially and morally, to suppress all violation of the laws now in force or hereafter to be en- And Orange county during his time. Ruef refused to do so and all the places of registration in San Francisco were located south of Market street and a large proportion of the republican vote of San Franceco is unregistered because registration places, whose locations were controlled by Ruef, were inaccessible. After the appointment of the republican state committee, Ruef manifested his hostility to the committee, and complained of the way it was constituted, although all the elements of the party, including a large number of Gov. Pardee's supporters, were upon the committee. Within a few days a meeting was held in the city of San Francisco, in which Andrew M. Wilson, who was nominated for railroad commissioner in the district consisting of the city of San Francisco, by Ruef's direction, as he controlled more than a majority of the delegation, made a speech, in which he declard in favor of Bell, and said that he was opposed to Gillett. And another creature of Ruef's made a speech in which he challenged the republican committee to take a poll of the delegation of the convention at Santa Cruz, and asserted that a majority of the delegation opposed the election of Gil- ANGELS EXPRESS, all its Espee "push" paper, animated by Earl of therigerator car trust, has its political moorings, no opportunity of villi-publican candidate for Several times of late it and Gillett's nomination at about by Ruef, when our ought to know, per-that Ruef had no more Gillett's nomination did himself. And another creature of Ruef's made a speech in which he challenged the republican committee to take a poll of the delegation of the convention at Santa Cruz, and asserted that a majority of the delegation opposed the election of Gillett and would support Bell, evidently relying upon the theory that all of the Ruef delegates from San Francisco upon such a poll would vote in favor of Bell. The fact that Bell was endorsed by the union labor party shows positively that Ruef, who was the manager and manipulator of that party, is using all his power to secure the election of Bell. It is also a well known fact that a large portion of the delegates to the democratic convention at Sacramento were controlled by Ruef, because he dominated the primaries of all the parties in San Francisco, and that every one of the votes controlled by him were used at that convention in support of Bell, after a conference between Gavin McNab and Ruef. It is also a notorious fact, repeatedly asserted by republican papers, by Mr. Gillett in his campaign speeches, and undenied by Bell, that when Bell started out on his campaign he denounced Ruef and Schmitz; that at Modesto he received a telegram from San Francisco directing him (Bell) to cease his attacks upon Ruef and Schmitz; since which he has made no reference to them whatever. This will be the last issue of the Gazette previous to the election November 6th, and we take occasion to warn our readers against the roorback which will probably make its appearance on schedule time. One favorite mode of procedure is to circulate stories that an opponent has his property listed with a real estate agency and contemplates leaving the county as soon as the votes are counted. Another is the anonymous circular making attacks upon his character. Remember, the election of every republican county candidate is conceded, with a single exception, and against this man lies are being and have been circulated. Rally to the support of S. O.
