In another column will be found some interesting figures from the Riverside Press relative to the erection of a federal building at a point soon to be selected in the Eighth congressional district. The cities of Santa Barbara, Riverside, Redlands, San Bernardino, Bakersfield and Santa Ana are, it seems, in line for this honor, and one of these towns probably will receive the appropriation which will be made by congress next year. These figures will be found most interesting to look at. How does Anaheim compare with these ambitious towns? No so badly, if we look closely into the facts hedging about each case, Riverside, for instance, has a territorial area, if we remember right, of 56 square miles. Anaheim one of one and a half miles square. Red-

No so badly, if we look closely into the facts hedging about each case, Riverside, for instance, has a territorial area, if we remember right, of 56 square miles. Anaheim one of one and a half miles square. Redlands has an area of 64 square miles, if memory is not at fault. and Santa Ana's area is close on to thirty square miles.
The five wards at Santa Ana report a gain in voting strength of 115 this year, as compared with two years ago. Anaheim's two precincts show an increase of 94. West Anaheim, which embraces all the territory around this city, north, east, south and west has an increase of two voters, but account must be taken of the 75 voters lost to that precinct by the formation of Orangethorpe precinct. The real increase in Anaheim and West Anaheim is thus 165 voters in two years, as against 115 for a larger territorial area at Santa Ana; and this locality is growing faster than any portion of the county.
Whenever the chamber of commerce advocates an expansion of the city limits, a number of excellent gentlemen on the outside "throw a fit." But the way to place ourselves in line with these other ambitious towns is not to confine ourselves to a municipality of microscopical littleness.
If Anaheim had the same territorial area as either Riverside or Redlands, we should embrace not only West Anaheim, but a good part of Orangethorpe, Fullerton, Buena Park, Benedict, and the intervening locality. We would poll probably as many votes as either Riverside or Redlands, and inevitably will be found most interesting to look at. How does Anaheim compare with these ambitious towns?

If Anaheim had the same territorial area as either Riverside or Redlands, we should embrace not only West Anaheim, but a good part of Orangethorpe, Fullerton, Buena Park, Benedict, and the intervening locality. We would poll probably as many votes as either Riverside or Redlands, and inevitably do quite as much postal business. Of course we do not advocate any such expansion, but we most certainly do stand for a Greater Anaheim.
Congressman Smith has secured an appropriation of $180,000 for a public building at San Diego, and at least one of these towns here referred to will probably get an appropriation of $50,000 from congress next year.
Anaheim might just as well figure in this list as not. But the way to go at it is not by confining ourselves to an area of a mile and a half square. Probably not all of these aspiring towns will receive a federal building within the next ten years; but some of them undoubtedly will. Can not one look far enough ahead and see that Anaheim will be in ten years, if it maintain its present rate of growth, in line for some consideration at the hands of Uncle Sam? Let us lay the foundation for our future greatness by taking

While he could have had the democratic gubernatorial nomination by acclamation, he positively declined to permit his name to be used in that connection on the score that his private affairs greatly in disorder from the disaster of April, demanded his entire attention. Mr. Phelan is a shy political fox when he scents defeat and the prospect of a winning canvass against Gillett did not persuade him against his better judgment. Yet he has since found plenty of time to stump the state for Bell, to introduce that young man to the bankers of Los Angeles and to contribute liberally to the democratic campaign fund. It has been said very unkindly of Mr. Phelan that he only votes the democratic ticket when his name is on it, but this year his orthodoxy is above suspicion. He wants to be the junior United States senator from California.
Mr. Gillett and the Employers' Liability Act

For many years the trainman of the United States have endeavored to secure from congress the passage of the Employers' Liability act. At the last session of congress it came up for consideration before the House Judiciary committee, of which Mr. Gillett was a member. He advocated the passage of the measure and President Roosevelt, who was also interested in the bill, invited him to a conference at the White House where the matter was thoroughly discussed. The President declared himself strongly in favor of the bill and Mr. Gillett told him that he would do all in his power in its interests.
At the subsequent sessions of the judiciary committee, Mr. Gillett advocated a favorable report which carried. There was a serious question that the bill as presented gave to the creditors the first claim against widows, children or dependents. To avoid this Mr. Gillett presented an amendment, preventing the priority of creditors, and it was adopted. When the measure came before the House on final passage Congressmen Sterling of Illinois and Gillett of California represented the bill and defended it against all attacks. It was passed, went through the senate, was signed by the President and is now a law.
J. Howard Bell was over from Santa Ana some evenings ago attacking S. M. Davis, the man who defeated him for the nomination for district attorney in the recent republican convention. If Bell has a particle of honor about him, he will doubtless refrain from future attacks against the man who beat him fairly. It comes with poor grace from a man in Mr. Bell's place.

Examiner, gesticulating and a-pulling of its hair, as republicans are "collecting sum of money" to defeat Lee Langdon. Mr. Hearst lets do a little figuring now really very funny he is. Two years ago gave a majority of 115,000. An increase this year of 200 voters in the state, and vary as to the increased this vote will give the re-election. But it is estimated the republican majority will be 3000 up. Added to this is that the democrats are divided between Bell and Langdon in respective tickets. We may much if Langdon polls yes in the state, and these all of them drawn from democrat in California has show for office than a re-election Texas, or a cat in the regions without claws. No REPUBLICAN this year can have any excuse for not voting the entire republican ticket. All the candidates on that ticket are worthy and capable men. No one is more worthy of support than S. M. Davis, the candidate for district attorney. His large and varied experience as a lawyer makes him in every way capable of serving the people in an acceptable manner. He is of sterling worth and irreproachable character and of the highest integrity. His republicanism is of long standing, he having made speeches for the republican party in presidential years in California, as well as in Minnesota and in Pennsylvania, his native state. Let every republican vote for him at the approaching election.
