WALKER NAILS ROORBACK;
VICIOUS CAMPAIGN CANARD
Runs Down Story Circulated
In Convention — Involving Money to Bribe Voters
S. O. Walker yesterday ran down at Santa Ana a vicious campaign canard which has been circulating about him since the republican county convention, and which vanishes into thin air—hot air—the closer it is inspected. At the time of the convention, a leading Santa Ana republican began circulating certain derogatory reports concerning Mr. Walker, in the endeavor to encompass his defeat for the shrievalty nomination. It was this man's inalienable right to support whomsoever he pleased in the convention, but when he began to give out reports reflecting upon Walker's character, he transgressed the bounds of political decency, and committed a wrong which he yesterday was quick to right.
Immediately upon hearing this rumor Walker left the convention hall, after his nomination as sheriff, and while the fight for supervisor was in progress, determined to run down the canard. He spent two hours looking for his man, but failed to find him. He was rather warm under the collar.
Since that time this vicious canard has reared its ugly head, like a serpent in the grass, at various times and in various localities, the latest point being at Fullerton last week.
Walker met the author of the story corruptible—who has no right to enforce all the laws upon the statute book.

after his nomination as sheriff, and while the fight for supervisor was in progress, determined to run down the canard. He spent two hours looking for his man, but failed to find him. He was rather warm under the collar.
Since that time this vicious canard has reared its ugly head, like a serpent in the grass, at various times and in various localities, the latest point being at Fullerton last week.
Walker met the author of the story in Santa Ana yesterday and said to him:
"I have been looking for you since the time of the convention. I want to have a little talk about politics with you. I understand you made the statement at the convention and have since repeated it. that I was a 'grafter,' and had a dishonest private and political record. Will you please inform me on what authority you make these statements."
"I made the statement that at the last meeting of the republican county central committee four years ago, you asked for $130 to spend in Buena Park precinct," said the gentleman.
"Now I don't want to dispute your word," replied Walker, "but I want to say that if I ever gave expression to such a ridiculous statement I do not now recall it. I might have said it in a josh, for I remember the boys were joshing about campaign funds at the time. But I never asked for any such sum seriously.
"I'll tell you how much money I received during all the time I acted as central committeeman at Buena Park. That was just $6, and I never asked for another cent. This money was expended for teams to get the voters out to the polls."
A bystander, a mutual friend of both parties, here stepped up and said:
"I was a member of the central committee at the time, and I remember the circumstance you allude to. But this is not the man (pointing to Walker) who asked for that money. You have mixed him up with _____, who did make such a demand on the committee for another precinct, and was promptly turned down."
That was a plain, straightforward statement from an honorable man, whose reputation had been maligned.
"Can it be possible? If that is so, I have done you a great wrong," admitted the gentleman, "and I beg your

is not the man (pointing to Walker) who asked for that money. You have mixed him up with ——, who did make such a demand on the committee for another precinct, and was promptly turned down.
That was a plain, straightforward statement from an honorable man, whose reputation had been maligned.
"Can it be possible? If that is so, I have done you a great wrong," admitted the gentleman, "and I beg your pardon for it. Here is my hand. You shall have my vote, and my support. I shall do all in my power to rectify the injury I have done you."
At Fullerton this story, which is here effectually exploded, has been woven into a yarn that the republican candidate for sheriff is a "bribe-giver and bribe-taker."
The fag ends of this $130 story are being circulated at various outlying localities, but it has run its course. It was a vicious accusation to make against any man. A well-known minister of the gospel has attacked Walker on this account, whereas as a matter of fact the man who asked for the $130 is one of his own townspeople.
The democrats have concentrated their fire on Walker. Their executive committee held a meeting at Santa Ana one evening last week and conceded the defeat of every man on their ticket, with the possible exception of sheriff and district attorney.
The democratic candidates have resolved to cut off their county meetings. This is a practical admission of defeat.
This attack upon the republican candidate for sheriff will be worked to a finish, even if it is frayed at the edges. You may be asked to scratch his name off your ticket in return for a democratic vote for any candidate on your ticket. Be a man, not a monkey. Stand by this man—clean, honest, in-

quire into his past political record. From his early youth he has been an earnest student of political questions; not from the standpoint of the professional politician, but as a young man prompted by motives of purest patriotism, with the highest personal ideals and ambitions. At the age of 18 he was studying law, and shortly after admission to the bar was holding the office of city attorney of Eureka, Cal. After this he held successively the offices of state senator for two terms, during which time he was chairman of the state senate judiciary committee, and congressman from the First congressional district, to which office he was also elected for a second term.
"As a member of the house judiciary committee Mr. Gillett was an important factor in the disposition of the many difficult questions submitted to that committee for determination and report. His sound judgment, judicial temperament, conservatism and honesty were eagerly recognized by his colleagues, and his opinion upon any matter before the committee was eagerly sought and had great weight in shaping the decision finally reached.
"It will therefore be readily seen that his training through life has been of a kind that peculiarly fits him for the high office for which he has been selected by the republicans of our state. Two years ago I campaigned through his district, where I met his constituents, his friends..."

Two years ago I campaigned through his district, where I met his constituents, his friends and neighbors, and I know that he has the confidence of the people of that district, a confidence that will be shared by the people of the entire state when they have had an opportunity to meet him personally and observe his good qualities of mind and heart. Codfin Moth Parasite
Farmers' institutes have been held during the past two weeks at Santa Ynez, Santa Maria and Lompoc in Santa Barbara county, and at Paso Robles in San Luis Obispo county. The varied industries of these places were represented in lectures by experts, some of whom were from the University of California and from various other places.
Representatives of the State Hor-ticultural commission were at the Lompoc institute and exhibited a colony of the codlin moth parasite.
This parasite is of recent introduction, but promises to control the codlin moth so that apples free from worms will be the rule and not the exception. It was found that there are but few codlin moths in the Lompoc orchards, particularly those nearest the ocean.
That district is frequented by heavy fogs during the summer afternoons and evenings, and as that is the time in which the codlin moth works on the apples it is unable to
