VOLUME XXXVI ANAHE JIM GILLETT—GEO. KNIGHT; NEW FRIEND; OLD FAVORITE Speak to Great Throng on Street—Enthusiastic Ovation to Next Governor Jim Gillett, the next governor of the state, and George Knight, the idol of California republicans, are in town as we go to press. They arrived this morning at 11:40 o'clock from Garden Grove, accompanied by a delegation of 100 enthusiastic republicans in thirty automobiles. They were met at the city's gates by a delegation of home republicans and escorted to town. Doodle Dees and democrats have held meetings here this year, with few hearers present and no enthusiasm. Today's meeting is one which cheers the heart of the next governor. The crowd filled the street, numbering several hundreds, and the enthusiasm was rampant and contagious. With the party is Warrén Porter, candidate for lieutenant-governor, republican county candidates and other next governor of California, and her old friend Knight. At noon Mr. Gillett and his numbering 100 guests sat down elaborate luncheon in the room of the Odd Fellows' building. As the future governor drew town the city band struck up a air, and the crowd cheered. Clyde Bishop introduced M in a ringing speech. Mr. Gillett in his speech said: "Since my nomination the cratic press of the State, and our Republican papers, too, b ed that I am a machine candidate the railroad candidate. The crowd filled the street, numbering several hundreds, and the enthusiasm was rampant and contagious. With the party is Warrén Porter, candidate for lieutenant-governor, republican county candidates and other distinguished gentlemen. This is Mr. Gillett's first visit to Anaheim, but he is being enthusiastically received. Mr. Knight's first speech here was with Gov. Perkins, in 1879, when he spoke from a stand across the street from where he yesterday stood. He was here again with Gov. Markham in 1890. His eloquence as an orator was such as to secure for him the honor of nominating Roosevelt in the St. Louis convention. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1904 DOODLE DEE LANGDON MAKES HIS SPIEL Sees a Boss in Every Bush — Schoolboy Flights of Oratory—Toy Cannon. Doodle Dee Langdon, the "independence league" nominee for governor, spoke to a small audience on the street here on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Langdon drove into town in an automobile, accompanied by several spielers, including Mr. Black of Santa Ana, who imagines he is running for railroad commissioner; Cholly Boy Williams of Los Angeles, who wants to be attorney-general; an Ocean Park young man who is also out for an office; a young fellow from Santa Barbara, who acted as chief spieler, but was shortly unmasked by Langdon, who introduced him as a candidate for clerk of the supreme court; a blase comedian singing a topical song, and a toy cannon. Candidate Langdon blew in punctually on time at 1:45 o'clock. He was looked for and a crowd quickly gathered about him. He impressed one as a typical San Francisco politician, the last man south of Market street one would select for the important office of governor. He smoked a huge cigar and enveloped the surroundings in wreaths of smoke. A toy cannon was fired in the street, and men and women came running from the shops to see what it was all about. Down street three horses broke their fastenings and started to run away. The man with the cannon started to fire again. "Hold on, hold on there!" cautioned Langdon, "let's wait till these runaways are quieted." The man paused momentarily, but soon his fowling piece went off again, and the crowd grew bigger and bigger. An Irish comedian was introduced and sang a ditty about Casey getting his new shovel broke, and then Mr. Black told the crowd how he would everlastingly paste it to the octupus if he were elected railroad commissioner. Mr. Williams made his spiel, paying his respects to the present attorney-general, whom he accused of doing nothing in the gentle art of smashing the railroads. Mr. Bell's distinguishing characteristic was, he said, running for office, a habit which he incurred in early youth and which sticks to him with dogged persistency. "If Mr. Bell is elected," continued Williams, "he will be a candidate for re-election four years from now. As he believes no candidate was ever elected governor in California without the assistance of the bosses he will certainly do something during his administration to merit their good-will, and he will as surely betray the people. Take no chances—vote for Langdon." Two men clapped their hands at this. The rest of the crowd stood silent, wondering what else was coming. Other members of the aggregation made their spiel, when top-liner Langdon was introduced and spoke for half an hour. Three men clapped their hands as he arose. He said there were three factions at the Sacramento convention: one favoring his endorsement for governor, another against him, and a third composed of adherents of Ruef, McNabb, McCaffery, Sandy, McNair and the rest of the corrupt bosses. As the latter gang were also agin him, his defeat was compassed without great effort. He pictured both the republican and democratic parties as being boss-ridden. “Which ever wins,” he said, “the people lose.” Langdon’s talk was a schoolboy effort at oratory. His platitudes were good, but there was little enthusiasm. He pictured a boss in every bush, seeking to spring upon the passing wayfarer and despoil him of his eye teeth. He referred briefly to his platform, which is composed principally of planks taken from the socialists. After Langdon’s spiel the crowd was photographed, and later the doodle dee aggregation hiked to Orange. Dr. C. W. A largely attended meeting of citizens of Anaheim and vicinity was held at the city hall on Tuesday evening in response to a call for the purpose of forming a good roads club. A strong delegation was present from Fullerton to assist in the organization of the club, as well as a number from Santa Ana. H. A. Dickel presided and P. H. Krick acted as secretary. Frank Ey, member of the state executive committee of El Camino Real association, gave a review of the genesis of the organization, as well as the historical character of what will come in time to be a splendid highway. The counties of Southern California are moving in the matter, and he urged the formation of a good strong club at this point. Clubs had been formed at Santa Ana and Fullerton, as well as in many places in adjoining counties. Rev. Wharton of Santa Ana made a strong talk in favor of good roads. He had recently traveled over some of the noted highways of Europe, and compared Orange county thoroughfares with them unfavorably. C. C. Chapman made a sensible talk upon the necessity for good roads. Every thousand dollars expended by a good roads club will bring $10,000 in return. Orange county was noted for its bad roads. Los Angeles automobilists have maps showing the good and bad roads in Southern California. Few of these men ever drive their cars through Orange county. He referred to the cordial feeling existing between this city and Fullerton, and hoped it would continue.
