MORAVIAN BARLEY
While it is five years since the Moravian or Hanna barley was first introduced into California through a five-pound sample sent by the U. S. Agricultural Department to Prof. E. W. Hilgard of the Agricultural College of the University of California, and while all the experiments seem to demonstrate its superiority over other barleys in practically all important points, yet we find that but few farmers in California are aware of its existence and still fewer of its properties.
The State Agricultural Society has made careful inquiry of a few farmers who have grown this barley more or less extensively, and if it possesses the qualities which those who have grown it agree that it has, the day ought to be hastened when it shall take the place of the common varieties of barley in all the grain fields of the State. If it is as much better than the common yields, and special meall latter, together with other kernel, renders it one of the orites among the German or Austrian brewers."
Von Proskowetz claims for a pedigree and says that selected as a single plant from ley which he knew to be Moravian origin. Through selections he has been able productivity up to 3,700 kilo are (about 65 bushels) to the shorten its period of growth week. It is light strait suited especially to light loams. Owing to its ear quality, it is especially Hungary, where the hot soil in the latter part of July, Hanna barley has so far may be little influenced by it. heavy yielding capacity, high grade as a brewing variety is driving out all in Austria, and every year titles of seed grain are in Hungary. Respectfully,
J. A. Finke
Secretary State Agriculture

California are aware of its existence and still fewer of its properties.
The State Agricultural Society has made careful inquiry of a few farmers who have grown this barley more or less extensively, and if it possesses the qualities which those who have grown it agree that it has, the day ought to be hastened when it shall take the place of the common varieties of barley in all the grain fields of the State. If it is as much better than the common barley as we are led to believe it is from the reports made to us on the subject, then its general introduction throughout California one year earlier than might result through ordinary channels would be worth to the farmers of the state, in the increased yield alone, to say nothing about a better price by reason of its better quality, more than the cost of maintaining the State Agricultural society for a good many years. Without affirming or denying its properties, therefore, we state the points claimed for it in the hope that barley-growers may be induced to try it for themselves, and thus earlier reap the benefit if their trial should prove this new grain possesses the points in its favor that are claimed.
Mr. August Hagemann of Livermore was the first to plant it in California, and has been growing it for five years. He says: "The Hanna or Moravian barley has shown more resistance to drought than the six-rowed common barley. In its normal state it weighs 56 pounds to the bushel; the standard weight of the six-rowed or common barley is 48 pounds to the bushel. The average yield under equal conditions is in favor of Moravian. It is an excellent feed barley as well as a brewing barley. Its malt shows by analysis to have a larger percentage of extract than chevalier barley. As an export barley for Australia and England it

TEXAS is just on the verge of one of the hottest political battles ever witnessed in the state, and it will be sensational from start to finish. Former Atty.-Gen. M. M. Crane of Dallas has agreed to meet Senator Bailey in joint debate all over the state, and as the relations between the gentlemen are already strained, it is confidently expected that the political “fur” will fly. Crane is one of the ablest men in the state, and a born “scrapper.” While attorney-general he once chartered a special train in order to meet a populist leader in joint debate, and is a great favorite with the democrats. His action in agreeing to meet Bailey is believed to foreshadow his candidacy before the state legislature for the United States senate in January, to succeed Bailey, if the legislature can be prevailed on to vote against Bailey.
A patch of government ground has been discovered by the promoters of the seaside resort planned to be constructed at the mouth of Aliso creek. The government land lies south of Aliso creek between the 153 acres deeded by Priestly Hall of Riverside to Horace J. Pullen of Los Angeles and the Moulton ranch. Mr. Hall and Mr. Pullen have covered the whole of the government strip with mining claims, oil being named as the deposit. When Hall sold to Pullen neither had any doubt that the property joined onto the Moulton ranch. As the surveyors began outlining the division of the tract into lots for the building of homes for millionaires the discovery of the adjoining government land was made.
