WASHINGTON CHAT
[CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE]
Washington, D. C., Sept. 29.
The uprising in Cuba is giving the Washington government more concern and anxiety than most people know anything about. This is shown in the activity displayed in the State, War and Navy departments, particularly in the latter. Day and night the operators in the department telegraph offices are on duty sending lengthy dispatches to the president at Oyster Bay and to the commanders of the different navy yards along the coast. Every official is exceedingly anxious to have all under his command in absolute readiness to move at a moments notice, in case Secretary Taft should fail in his mission to secure peace.
Little news as so the movement of war vessels is to be obtained at the navy department. Secret orders are constantly on the wires and according to the drift of talk heard in the corridors, every seaport in Cuba will be silently surrounded by U. S. ships in another week. Then if the revolutionists continue their disturbances, concerted action will be taken on every hand which will quickly show that the administration is not to be trifled with and that it does not intend to have a single American interest suffer in Cuba.
Much talk is also heard as to whether the present state of affairs in Cuba will interfere with President Roosevelt making his proposed tour
revolutionists continue their disturbances, concerted action will be taken on every hand which will quickly show that the administration is not to be trifled with and that it does not intend to have a single American interest suffer in Cuba.
Much talk is also heard as to whether the present state of affairs in Cuba will interfere with President Roosevelt making his proposed tour of inspection of the Panama canal. He will not start until early in November, but if the rebellion is not at an end by that time, some say that he would take the matter in his own hands, have his cruiser stop at Havana and make plain the fact that he will carry out the provision of the Cuban treaty which gives him the power to intervene and have Uncle Sam again in charge of the island republic.
Only at rare intervals is the city of Washington visited by a man-o’-war from a foreign nation. With her guns trained on the dome of the big capitol building, the Italian cruiser Fieramosca steamed slowly up the Potomac river, past the forts protecting the seat of government, and anchored directly opposite the capital city where she will remain during the next ten days or two weeks in order to give her officers and crew of 350 men an opportunity to view the sights of the city. This Italian boat is a forminable looking one and is equipped with twenty-eight powerful guns of various sizes, which could lay the government buildings and half the city in ruins before anyone could say “Jack Robinson.” Her mission is a peaceable one, however, and her sailors are neat appearing gentlemen who apparently are delighted with their stay in the capital of the land they call “Beautiful America.” From Washington the cruiser goes to Norfolk and New York, where the officers will sent the King of Italy at the wounding of a monument to the famous composer of music, Verdi.
There is much joy in the development of agriculture. This is unusual, because ever since the investigations, started some more ago, the big red building located at the Mall, has been a place of nature and gloom, due to the sham among clerks and officials. But all is changed and great joy is in the discovery that a new use has been found for corn-cobs and stalks, for it is the experts of agricultural department who the farmer to know that before he will be able to either get a price for cobs and stalks or coil them into alcohol at three gallon. So successful have elements along this line proven capitalists are talking of forming company to establish distillery various parts of the corn belt so to utilize the enormous quantity cobs and stalks that have hit gone mostly to waste. It is possible that the department will sue literature on the subject, can be secured free for the ask...

Get SCOTT'S Emulsion
When you go to a drug store and ask for Scott's Emulsion you know what you want; the man knows you ought to have it. Don't be surprised, though, if you are offered something else. Wines, cordials, extracts, etc., of cod liver oil are plentiful but don't imagine you are getting cod liver oil when you take them. Every year for thirty years we've been increasing the sales of Scott's Emulsion. Why? Because it has always been better than any substitute for it.

office. Serious complaints have been pouring in on the president which show that the big printery is in a state of disturbance that renders good work on the part of the employees almost an impossibility. Whether the president will give his personal attention to these troubles or whether he will turn the matter over to a committee to conduct an investigation, is not known. The public printer has been given a free hand in the running of the office and changes in the force have been made right and left. The employees desire to know if the president will back the public printer up in the numerous changes that have been made.

Disgusted With Rugby
Judging from the latest reports from Stanford and Berkeley, the northern football devotees are already inwardly regretting that the athletic committees of the two institutions decided in favor of Rugby football. "Stanford is heartily disgusted with the innovation," said a leading Cardinal student while visiting friends in Los Angeles recently, "and it would not be surprising in the least," he continued, "if, before the big intercollegiate game, the squad returned to the American style." This statement, coming in the face of recent reports of the alleged enthusiasm exhibited by the students of Stanford and Berkeley over the English game, is a startling assertion, yet the facts will bear it out.
It appears that early in the year when the northern universities were considering the much-mooted ques-
