IMPURE FOOD
The pure food law, which takes effect January 1st, is destined to have drastic and widespread effect among retail dealers the country over. A word of advice to local dealers may be worth while at this time. It should be said at the outset that all stocks of impure liquors, drugs, and foods of all kinds are subject to confiscation by the United States government January 1st. United States District Attorney Lawler of Los Angeles is sending out warning that he will descend upon these gentry the first of the new year. Acting under the conviction that his warning may have more or less local application we publish brief extracts of the law for the information of all concerned. The law defines adulteration of food in the following taken from the best basel Angeles it was found that considered to be the very market were found or to be altogether unfit for tion.
The new law is sweep effects upon impure drug as foods.
There is more adulterated food—fresh and canned meat, fish, chopped meats and wines and liquors—in this at the present time than fore, and the business has nothing short of an absurd ace to health. Let the no vigorously enforced, and States Attorney Lawler in his efforts to rid his of these vile adulterations.

Attorney Lawler of Los Angeles is sending out warning that he will descend upon these gentry the first of the new year. Acting under the conviction that his warning may have more or less local application we publish brief extracts of the law for the information of all concerned. The law defines adulteration of food in the following terms:
If it has been mixed and packed with anything which will reduce, lower or injuriously affect its quality or strength; if any substance has been substituted wholly or in part therefor; if any valuable constituent thereof has been wholly or in part abstracted; if it be mixed, colored, powdered, coated or stained in a manner whereby damage or inferiority is concealed; if it contain any added poisonous or other deleterious ingredient which may render it injurious to health. Provided, that when food products for shipment are preserved by any external application applied in such a manner that the preservative is necessarily removed mechanically or by maceration in water or otherwise, and directions for the removal shall be printed on the covering or package, the provisions of the act shall apply only when said products are ready for consumption. If it consists in whole or in part of filthy, decomposed or putrid animal or vegetable substances, or any portion of animal unfit for food, whether manufactured or not, or if it is the product of a diseased animal or one that has died otherwise than by slaughter."
In the case of drugs the new law provides:
"If, when sold under or by a name recognized in the United States Pharmacopoeia or National Formula, it differs from the standard of strength, quality or purity as determined by the test laid down in such publications, official at the time, unless the standard of strength, quality or purity be plainly stated upon the bottle, box or container thereof. Second, if its standard of purity shall fall below the professed standard of quality under which it is sold."
In the case of confectionery:
"If it contain terra alba, barytes, tale, chrome yellow or other mineral substance or poisonous color or flavor or other ingredient deleterious or detrimental to health, or any vinous, malt or spirituous liquor or compound or narcotic drug."
The first paragraph of the law body in the country. Alcohol law for which the law is so largely indebted to Marshall of North Dakota goes into effect until the first January, and when it does, it first benefit the larger district in all probability it will be sible for the bureau of revenue to extend the government inspection to distilleries out less than five hundred days. However, the court will get the benefit of a cheap source of light, heat power. It is especially in connection that the forthcoming phlet of the agricultural department will be of very general est. The department has assigned Professor Charles H. Columbia University to study adaptability of alcohol for combustion in engines, used in boats, automobiles, almost innumerable purposes, small and cheap power plants necessary. It is understood the first reports of this invention, and from the experience which have already been made Europe, that alcohol will about 5 to 8 per cent more in an internal combustion than will gasoline. In addition, it makes a fuel that is responsive to spark control the supposition is that it manufactured cheap enough compete with petroleum products as a source of power and new and profitable crops farmer. Experiments are being made by the agriculture department with what is known as "stock potato," which is source from which much alcohol manufactured abroad. One-quarter bushels of this will produce a gallon of
In the case of confectionery:
"If it contain terra alba, barytes, talc, chrome yellow or other mineral substance or poisonous color or flavor or other ingredient deleterious or detrimental to health, or any vinous, malt or spirituous liquor or compound or paracotic drug."
The first paragraph of the law quoted above refers to whiskies as well as to other more substantial articles of consumption, and it is to this that we wish especially at this time to refer.
It is undeniable that much of the socalled "whisky" sold over bars in certain saloons here, and this is true of nearly every city in the country, is adulterated to such an extent that it is absolutely unfit for use. These stocks are all of them subject to confiscation, and men dealing in them may be heavily fined and imprisoned under the new law. Such dealers may find themselves in a bad way, unless they proceed forthwith to cast out these deleterious poisons.
We make no outcry against pure wines and liquors such as may be obtained here, but it is against the poisonous adulterations masquerading under the guise of pure liquor that these remarks are aimed at.
In a recent analysis of liquors
as a source of power and new and profitable crops farmer. Experiments are being made by the agricultural department with what is known as the "stock potato," which is source from which much alcohol can be sold wholesale as cheap, if not a little cheaper than the prevailing price of motor spirit. All that is known on the subject of alcohol heating capacity, its lightiness when burned with a gas bottle, and its potentiality as a fuel will be included in the coming bulletin of the agriculture department. There will do be a large demand for this and its popularity is likely than repay the department the trouble and expense of it up.

Next Wednesday, the 26th, is the last day upon which voters may register. Unless they register by that time they will not be permitted to vote in November. All voters who have lived in the state a year are entitled to registration. One must be ninety days a resident of the county, and thirty days in his precinct, in order to vote. The great register used at the general election two years ago has been canceled and all voters must re-register. If you have not so reregistered since the first of this year, you must do so before next Wednesday, or you lose your vote. Does this mean YOU?
