Mrs. Henry Strodthoff is here from Douglas, A. T., visiting her mother, Mrs. Fay.
Miss Kate Rea reports that the Los Angeles Examiner has been added to the list of papers on file at the public library.
One hundred and fifty excursionists went to Newport Beach yesterday on the Sunday school special leaving at 7 o'clock. Another crowd went down on the 10 o'clock. They returned last evening.
Skinner & Son have sold a Rea motor car to Charles Rush of Olive, and an oldmobile to Julius Schwentker of this city. An Elmore touring car just received at their garage attracts considerable attention, it being a high-speed $1650 machine.
Capt. Williams' new Moline touring car arrived on Thursday, and it is a beauty. Peter Weisel drove it down from Los Angeles, making the trip leisurely in two hours. Capt. Williams and J. B. Rea were in the car on its initial trip.
J. B. Rea this week sold the forty-acre M. M. Poole walnut ranch west of town to Mr. Cole, a late arrival from the east. Consideration, $12,000. Mr. Cole will build a residence on the tract and will otherwise improve the property. He was in town this week looking for a residence.
Charles Cowan, cousin of Dr. Adams, has arrived from Tulare, accompanied by his wife and daughter and will probably locate. Mr. Cowan reports abundant prosperity in the upper valley, but finds the weather too warm for comfort.

Adam Gledhill, father of Mrs. Robt. Edwards, arrived this week from Ogden, Utah, and will in a week or two return with his daughter to his home. Mrs. Edwards lost her husband last week in a distressing accident in the pump pit on the Johnson ranch on North street.
Mrs. Ygnacio Sepulveda of the City of Mexico is a guest of the Misses Sophia and Marie Rimpau. She is the wife of Judge Sepulveda, formerly superior judge of Los Angeles county, a gentleman well known throughout California. Mrs. Sepulveda will remain in Southern California several weeks, visiting friends here and in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and other places.
Spake & McCollum have taken down the wooden awning in front of Sandiland & Weisel's garage, which improves the appearance of the building. Contractor Lagman was in charge of the work. The owners will later remove the remaining wooden porch in front of their building and install a new front.
Recorder Howard held a seance with a number of violators of city ordinances on Monday morning. Santos Carrisosa, who was up on a charge of fighting, was fined $25. Juan Morales, for resisting an officer, was fined a similar amount. Both sums were paid. Two other intoxicated individuals were assessed $5 each, and two others were given jail sentences. Sixty dollars were paid into the city treasury as a result of the day's deliberations.

The Fullerton Tribune reports that a resident of that city on a recent Saturday counted 84 rigs tied to hitching posts in the center of this city, while on his return to Fullerton he could count only four. Anaheim is by odds the busiest town in the county.
Articles of incorporation have been filed by the Laguna Beach Wharf and Improvement company, to construct wharfs and warehouses, and to carry on a shipping and storage business, and to deal in real estate. Jos. Yoch, J. N. Isch, O. W. Warling, C. A. Bissell and Samuel Jacoby are directors. The capital stock is placed at $100,000.
Ephraim Helmsen celebrated his eighth birthday on Saturday and had as his guests forty-five little boys and girls, who partook of a garden supper with relish and enthusiasm. When Contractor Lagman opened the case containing the large panes of plate glass for the Helmsen building a few days ago, he found that the largest pane, costing $60, was broken. A new one was ordered and will arrive in a day or two.
Mrs. Griselda Eschelbach has appeared as a claimant for a share in the estate of the late Mrs. Francisca de Rimpau, which is valued at $600,000. She alleges in an action brought in the superior court that she is an adopted daughter of deceased, and has been overlooked in the decree of distribution granted some days ago.
Charles Schindler who sustained serious injuries in an assault upon him by a tramp two weeks ago, is able to be up and around and will probably soon recover. Mr. Schindler sustained a fracture of the skull over the right ear, and for a time suffered with paralysis of the left side. He was also kicked viciously by his assailant, who is confined in the county jail pending the result of his victim's injuries before having his preliminary examination. Dr. Beebe said yesterday that his patient was gaining a little every day and would probably recover.
Joe Backs while out hunting rabbits in the Cadman tract some days ago had his attention attracted to the piteous cries of a squirrel, which seemed in evident distress. On approaching the squirrel he noted its tail expanded in bushy fashion and the hair upon its back on end. On closer inspection he beheld a large rattlesnake ready to seize it. The snake's charm was released on the approach of our young friend, and the squirrel scampered off at a lively rate. Joe shot the snake, which sported nine rattles.

Miss Bernice Tipton, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Tipton, has been seriously ill of anaemia, and on Thursday evening last recovery was almost dispaired of. Dr. Johnston is in charge of the case, and called Dr. Brainerd of Los Angeles, and the other physicians of this city in consultation in the case. Dr. Brainerd said the chances of recovery were about one in two hundred. Oxygen was administered, and the patient rallied. She has since continued to improve and hopes are entertained for her recovery. Miss Tipton is an especially bright and amiable young lady, and her many friends will hope that she may speedily recover.

Frank Shanley writes from Salt Lake that he will remain in that city several weeks yet, having decided to erect a business block there. His suit with the Wabash railroad, which seeks to condemn property owned by him, and which it desires to use for depot purposes, has not yet come to trial.
Lieut. Selinger and Corporal Speilman of Co. E are at Woodland this week participating in the state shoot for the selection of a team to compete at the national shoot at Seagirt, N.J. The boys are expected to give a good account of themselves. So far no news has come relative to scores.
