STATE SCHOOL CENSUS State Superintendent of Schools T.J. Kirk has just made public the school census figures for the counties of the State for 1906. The total number of children of school age from 5 to 17, is 440,886. This is a gain of 21,571 over 1905, the largest total gain the state has made in many years. The figures for the census for San Francisco are estimated as the census for that city was not completed when the earthquake and fire came. They are regarded, however, as reasonably accurate so far as representing the situation at the time the double calamity occurred. Next year's record will undoubtedly show a tremendous loss in San Francisco and a heavy gain in Alameda, due to the transfer of population from one side of the bay to the other. A net loss in the bay section may, however, be expected, and under the circumstances if the state holds its own when the census of 1907 is taken it will be doing very well. The following is the list of counties that show a gain for 1906: Census 1906. Gain. Alameda...39,708 3764 Alpine...82 23 Amador...2386 5 Butte...5252 305 Contra Costa...5472 377 Fresno...13,040 726 Glenn...1388 146 Humboldt...7956 216 Inyo...940 33 Kings...2893 116 Lake...1560 87 Los Angeles...75,924 8049 Marin...4111 53 Mendocino...5263 49 Merced...2869 225 Monterey...5011 69 Napa...3442 108 Nevada...3473 37 Orange...6949 189 Plumas...889 6 Riverside...5703 113 Sacramento...10,020 386 San Bernardino...9535 485 San Diego...9069 545 rive on the 10:30 Southern Pacific Saturday morning for distribution among the mountain streams of county. The communication failed state whether the cans are of the or small size. If of the former missioner Boyd will have at his disposal 240,000 trout and if of the size 120,000. In any event every "fry" will find a congenial home the mountain streams within two hours after arrival. The fish commissioner has also commenced to make arrangements for the disposal of the trout. An allotment will be delivered at Ontario, and these the trout will be hurried to streams in that section, and on the rival of the train Commissioner Boyd will be in waiting with wagon which to rush the remaining cannery trout to the surrounding streams. She will go to Lytle creek, some to Lake canyon, others to Cable creek, others to City creek, Mill creek, Monterey creek and other streams, the long ride being that to Deep creek where will consume the best part of two days. Each wagon will be in charge of trustworthy driver, and one who past experience, knows how to handle the little fish. Ice will be carried along in liberal quantities with water to keep the water in the cans at a certain temperature, the equal to that of the water flowing in the streams. Commissioner Boyd has won an enviable record with the state fish mission, for his painstaking handling the consignments of sent to him. For years he has charge of restocking the stream San Bernardino county, and in no instance has he failed to obtain best results. This year if he threw best the waters of Big Bear Valley he be stocked. It is an interesting fact that while this gain is widely distributed throughout the state, nearly half the net gain is in the seven counties of Southern California. Leaving out Ventura, which, for some unaccountable reason, shows a slight loss, the gain in the other six counties of Southern California amounts to 9710. Adding to this the gain in San Francisco and Alameda, we have a total of over 17,000. Among the other counties which show a large gain are Contra Costa, Butte, Humboldt, Merced, Sacramento, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Stanislaus and Tulare. The San Joaquin valley on the whole makes a good showing. The following counties show a loss: Census 1906. Loss Calaveras ...2585 Colusa ...1764 Del Norte ...689 El Dorado ...1878 Kern ...4343 Lassen ...1088 Madera ...1510 Mariposa ...856 Modoc ...1339 Mono ...422 Placer ...3076 San Benito ...1579 Shasta ...3752 Sierra ...803 Siskiyou ...3735 Tehama ...2748 Trinity ...701 Tuolumne ...2276 Ventura ...3935 Yolo ...2988 It will be noted that most of these are mining counties and nearly all of handling the consignments of sent to him. UP-STATE POLITICS The republican leaders would to find just the right man for chair of the state convention to be held Santa Cruz. It is acknowledged former Senator Thomas Flint of Juan, who gained ample experience the legislature and elsewhere as aiding officer, would be able to the requirements of the situation it is said that he is prejudiced against Dr. Pardee and derives special pressure from the entertainment of prejudice. George A. Knight is on the list the capables, and it is quite freely mitted that he could bring to the charge of the important function presiding officer the best pair of ventilation lungs in the wide, wide but Mr. Knight, as a national teameman of the party, has no intention to descend to state affairs. Moreover, he is the special advocate of greesman Gillett's claims for the errorship, therefore the deduction he would not be acceptable to the dee, Edson and Porter forces. There is a feud of long standing cording to the San Francisco Californien Knight and the Union League club. Something happened prior Thomas R. Bard's election to the United States senate which severed orator from the league. The gulf so wide and deep that Knight could in justice to his own feelings join Shortridge and other spell-binder the era in giving the glad voice welcome to the statesman of Ventura. In a letter to Bard the orator explained his absence from the function in Union League club rooms and gossip gave the senator the rest of story. The gulf is still yawning. Great fire which swept away so many animosities, political and personal never touched the principals in feud. Superior Judge Henry A. Me It will be noted that most of these are mining counties and nearly all of these have shown a steady decline in population for many years. The total population of the State, as estimated from the school census for this year, should be close to 1,800,000, the gain of last year being over 85,000. Under favorable conditions we ought to expect a population of close to two millions by the time the census of 1910 is taken.—Riverside Press. Trout for Mountain Streams Fish Commissioner James H. Boyd has won an envirtion with the state fish commits painstaking care in consignments of trout. For years he has had stocking the streams of no county, and in not one he failed to obtain the This year if he thinks of Big Bear Valley will crop and it is believed that the total output for the season will exceed all previous records. More acres of beets were planted last year than ever before in this valley and the splendid yield has given the farmers great encouragement to enter more heavily than ever into the beet industry. The beets from this district are all being shipped to Chino this year. From every direction may be seen the great beet wagons headed toward the dumps, groaning under their tons of sugar beets. Hitherto only horse teams have been used to draw the product out of the fields, but this season the Whiteside brothers and several other large ranchers have introduced the traction engine to hurry up the work, which draws five and six trailers with the greatest ease, whereas with horses and mules there is oftentimes difficulty in getting out of the fields with only one trail wagon. Extensive repairs were made at the Newland shipping station this season. The beet dump was refloored and the structure was strengthened otherwise in preparation of the hardest run in its history. Many of the ranchers are having new beet racks built, and Wm. Manske, the Huntington Beach blacksmith and wagonmaker, has been obliged to keep extra men working night and day in order to get them in shape for the hauling. T. J. Jones of Garden Grove and E. A. Chaffee are in charge of the shipping from this vicinity. Among the large beet growers of this locality are W. A. Patterson, W. T. Newland, Geisler Bros., Farnsworth Bros., A. E. and A. L. Whiteside, Wm. Lamb, Casper Borchard, James Cain, Sam Talbert and M. Bushard. The Japs are also growing beets quite extensively this year.—Huntington Beach News.
