LOCAL EVENTS Mrs. W. A. Wallace and family are at San Juan Hot Springs. Mrs. C. I. Hoople visited with relatives in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Miles Hill has taken a position at the Hussman barber shop. Mrs. M. J. Baker departed on Saturday for Fort Worth, Texas. Miss Freida Backs is visiting with relatives and friends in Los Angeles. Judge Howard and family who have been sojourning at the Landing returned home Tuesday evening. C. O. Rust and family, Dr. Houck and Mrs. Houck of this city, accompanied by Mrs. Koll and Mrs. Browning of Los Angeles, left on Tuesday for a fortnight's outing at Catalina. A. H. Patterson, formerly in the implement business here, was in town the fore part of the week renewing old acquaintances. Mr. Patterson since leaving here suffered the loss of his business by fire in an eastern city, his loss being $65,000. He is now in the real estate business in Los Angeles. The Home insurance company of San Francisco, which has a number of policy holders in this vicinity, has issued notification that it is unable to meet its losses consequent upon the San Francisco fire. Local agents are rewriting policies in other companies. Al Smith, Henry Hussman, George Carroll, Percy Rust, Nate Ulm, County Treasurer Potter, Dr. Hill and others were seen on the sands at Newport Beach on Sunday afternoon. A $40,000 bathhouse and plunge is being erected at this point by the H. A. Peabody syndicate of capitalists. The state institute of the W. C. While $1000 per acre has not yet been touched by walnut property in this neighborhood, we never the less think the time is not far distant when even this large figure will be exceeded. Merton W. Skinner, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Skinner, and Miss Elsie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Nebelung, were married on Saturday evening at the residence of the bride's parents. Rev. O. Skinner of La Canyada, grandfather of the groom, officiated. Horace Skinner was best man, and Miss Hilda Fossek bridesmaid. A number of friends of the young couple, who are popular with a wide circle of acquaintances, were present, and an elaborate wedding spread was enjoyed. The newly married couple went to Catalina, where a brief honeymoon will be spent. On their return they will take up their residence in this city, where the groom is a successful young business man. The bride is a young lady of beauty and amiability and has many admirers. We extend felicitations upon the happy event. These counties have been added to the territory in charge of J. B. Neff of Anaheim, and all applications for farmers' institutes should be addressed to him. This county will be entitled to at least four institutes, and applications should be sent in early so that arrangements can be made to hold the institutes at the most desirable time. Mr. Neff requests that mention be made of the topics which it is desired to have discussed so that proper speakers may be engaged. The objects of farmers' institutes are to promote agriculture and horticulture; to show where wear and tear can be diminished, labor saved, methods of cultivation and production improved and the general welfare of the tiller of the soil advanced. Church Notes The fourth quarterly conference, which is the most important official meeting of the year, was held at the Methodist church on Monday afternoon, Dr. J. L. Pitner, presiding elder, in the chair. Officers were elected for the ensuing year, very few changes being made. Reports of the various interests of church work gave evidence of success in general and advancement along lines of special endeavor. On motion a request was made for Rev. Haffen to return as pastor of this church for another year. The motion carried and was declared unanimous.
