POLITICAL POINTS
While it is true that S. O. Walker of Buena Park defeated Charley Ruddock of Fullerton for the shrievalty nomination in last week's republican convention, it is also true that he counseled his friends to support W. R. Carpenter of Fullerton for county school superintendent. This was doing a kindly act to his neighboring precinct, for Nichols had by odds the greater number of supporters in the convention to start with. Nichols had strong backing at Santa Ana, Tustin, Westminster and other points, and with Walker's assistance could easily have won his fight on the floor of the convention. But a word from Walker put his friends behind Carpenter, with the result that victory went to the Fullerton man. For this courteous act, Walker is entitled not only to the thanks of Carpenter's friends but to the united support of Fullerton republicans as well. Mr. Ruddock was the candidate of the so-called "anti-saloon forces," when, as everyone knows, the liquor question was not an issue. He was deceived and led to political slaughter. The party may have rewards in store for such men as Ruddock, but the way to secure them is not by allying one's self with a secret organization making for the very destruction of the party.
If Walker defeated Ruddock he did much to secure the nomination for Carpenter. The latter could do nothing for Walker in the conven-

He was deceived and led to political slaughter. The party may have rewards in store for such men as Ruddock, but the way to secure them is not by allying one's self with a secret organization making for the very destruction of the party.
If Walker defeated Ruddock he did much to secure the nomination for Carpenter. The latter could do nothing for Walker in the convention. Walker acted honorably by his neighboring precinct. He is entitled to, and we think he will receive the undivided support of Fullerton, not only for his endorsement of Mr. Carpenter, but as well for his upright and manly qualities. And we believe Charley Ruddock will be one of his most enthusiastic supporters.
While upon the question of our neighboring town, it might be well to refer to a statement made by a delegate from that precinct after the convention, and re-echoed with approval by delegates from this town. We are informed several of the Fullerton delegates announced themselves as favoring a closer and more friendly policy toward Anaheim and its neighboring precinct to the west. Republicans hereabout will be quick to reciprocate such sentiments, and we believe such action will conduce to the advantage of both sections in future political conventions. Anaheim has had no candidate before a republican county convention (if we except the self-imposed candidacy of the impossible Amos' Jennings) in twelve years. Fullerton has had candidates in every convention. And Anaheim has for the most part supported them.
We believe the more enlightened republicans of Fullerton will in future seek to co-operate more cordially with their neighbors in political conventions, and this spirit of amity might advantageously be extended in other lines. Let us have no more splits between these neigh-

We believe the more enlightened republicans of Fullerton will in future seek to co-operate more cordially with their neighbors in political conventions, and this spirit of amity might advantageously be extended in other lines. Let us have no more splits between these neighboring precincts, but let us get together for the mutual good of all.
Senator Anderson got his plenty. Republicans long ago realized they committed an egregious blunder in electing him, but they never had a chance to soak him until the recent primaries. And, Lord love us, how they did fall upon him and smite him! Anderson's failure to support the bill creating a state pathological laboratory cost Orange county that institution. He tratoriously threw the laboratory at Riverside, where it now serenely reposes. Of course there can be nothing doing politically in this part of the state but Riverside is after it. If there should ever be a vacancy on the throne of grace on high, and Riverside should hear about it, here would be Frank Miller, Editor Ciarke and George Frost chasing after the job. And we expect they would come near landing it.
These Riverside chaps hiked to Sacramento when the pathological bill was up in the senate. The bill provided that the laboratory should Anaheim has for the most part supported them.

But this is not what turned Andersus cake to dough. His offer to

Will Riverside be after the senaship next campaign? As sure as

or miss a trick. Yet it is true
that they themselves broke the altating compact two years ago
when they attempted to force Caldupon the district again—on ac-
reference to San Francisco adopted
by the Orange republican convention. It is worth reading again:
Whereas, we, the Republican party
of Orange county, realize that the
State of California has in times gone
by had abundant cause to be proud of
her metropolis, the city of San Francisco, and of their earnest desire at all
times to do and perform those things
which should advance the interest and
the standard of the whole state; and,
Whereas, that proud metropolis, by
the mysterious hand of seismic force
and the sword of flame, has been reduced to ruin; and,
Whereas, the spirit of prosperity
and growth which has ever characterized her people, smiles in the face of
adversity and builds anew her proud
temples until ere long she shall grace
the Golden Gate mightier and grander,
until she shall not only be the pride
of California, but the pride of our
whole great federal Union; now, therefore, be it.
Resolved, That we, the Republican
party of the county of Orange, extend
to her our deepest sympathy. and do
hereby make this public declaration
and acknowledgment of our belief in
her ability to accomplish the task set before her.
The resolutions adopted by the convention were good as far as they went, but it seems to us reference should have been made to those planks in the national platform devoted to measures essentially western, and which have the cordial approval of the president. These are: Irrigation of the arid west, conservation of flood waters, construction of reservoirs by the government, and reforestation of our mountains. These are matters of prime importance to us in California, and should have been referred to. Otherwise the resolutions have the true ring.
shall Riverside be after the senation next campaign? As sure as anything! Those Riverside virgins miss a trick. Yet it is true that they themselves broke the all-attaining compact two years ago when they attempted to force Caldwell upon the district again—on account of his familiarity with the banks bill! We had men in Orange county at that time who had taught well all he ever knew about the banks bill, yet the virgins never used a hair as they asked for his nomination. But he never got it. Anderson were worth a whoop, Orange county might yet be behind him but, Lord save us, we would do that. And it would be too "raw" to pick up another vote and force his nomination. We just as well be resigned to our fate. Do we hear any one saying something about George Frost?
The retirement of Frank Vegely from the assessor's office removes the court house one of the newest politicians who ever graced an office in that edifice. Vegely been in the assessor's office since organization of the county, four years of the time as assessor of county. He has had aspirations in place on the state board of realization. He has many friends in the county, who, now that he is elected, recall his stalwart work in the party in past campaigns. Vegely is not "out." He is merely ringing the count, and will be heard again. Anderson was a bird ofomen to him, and his buck ague always bad medicine to him.
Johnny Greeley came over from ettier to save the wreck, but he ran on a siding early in the race, and when last heard of was whistling for signals. He stay

Whereas, the people of the United States have for a period of two years since the election of the peerless standard bearer of the Republican party prosperity; and,

Whereas, the State of California, as an inseparable part of this Union, has received its full share and portion of the universal prosperity and abundance which prevails; realizing and recognizing that these results are secured by the persistent endeavor of the Republican party and a faithful adherence to its principles; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That we, the Republican convention of Orange county, in general assembly, do hereby commend the course pursued by our matchless leader, Theodore Roosevelt, in all his public acts, and further acknowledge our appreciation of the steadfast adherence to the principles of the Republican party under all conditions evidenced by the governor of this state, George C. Pardee, and we further commend his administration.
The Eighth district congress convention will meet at Santa Ana August 21st. For some months past an effort has been made to induce C. C. Chapman of Fullerton to enter the race, but his business interests are such that he has been compelled to decline the honor. Whether Senator Ward of San Diego will enter the contest is not known at this writing. The Eighth district is composed of ten counties, as set forth in the subjoined table, together with the republican vote two years ago, and the number of delegates each county is entitled to in the

The Riverside republicans entended Anderson! Now wouldn't

represented by Anderson."
What did Orange county do to him?

The republican state convention
is at Santa Cruz September 5th.
Aspirations of Sacramento were

fact that Los Angeles will have

is not expected to cast half its
final vote this fall, its representation in the convention two years
after will be away below that of
Los Angeles. Orange county will
be 11 delegates in the state convention, which will be composed of

In Santa Ana 700 votes were cast
at the republican primary, and in
this city and the West End 300. The
contest was warm in these precincts,
and the largest vote ever polled at a
primary was recorded. It is estimated that in the other thirty-odd
precincts in the county between 800
and 900 votes were cast. This gives
us a total of 1800 votes, and the figures may go as high as 1900. At the
presidential election two years ago
the republicans polled 2587 votes,
and Roosevelt carried the county by
1730. What do the figures of the
primary indicate? There can of
course be no basis for comparison,
but indications point to a heavy republican vote this fall. The primary
vote approaches to within 687 votes
of the total vote in the presidential
