VOLUME XXXVI ANAH ELECTRIC RAILWAY RUMORS POSSESS GREAT INTEREST Jacob Stern Announces Cars Will Be Running to Richfield by January 1st—New Townsite. Jacob Stern was in town on Saturday afternoon from Los Angeles and made the statement that cars will be running on the new electric line through Richfield and Olinda by the first of the coming year. The road will, he states, run from Los Nietos through the La Habra valley to Randolph and on to his new townsite east of Richfield, where he recently purchased 1040 acres. Henry E. Huntington is understood to be associated with him in the townsite, which will be placed upon the market in the near future. The road will continue to Yorba and on up River canyon through the Scully ranch to Riverside. Huntington has already purchased right-of-way through the Scully ranch, paying $5800 therefor, and it is given out that a sub-power station will be erected at that point. Right-of-way for the road through La Habra valley is now being closed up along the entire distance. Gerald Sandilands was in conference with W. J. Hole in Los Angeles some days ago, and was informed that a branch line will be constructed from Richfield through this city to the coast. Whether the line will go to Huntington Beach or Naples Mr. Hole would not say. It has been practically determined to construct a line from Richfield to Orange a mile or two east of this city, although the route has not as yet been determined. Mr. Stern has also purchased a tract of 1700 acres northwest of Placentia, through which the new line will run. He will later on lay out a townsite at that point. Mr. Huntington is also said to be interested with him in the enterprise. The entry of the Huntington electric road into the Placentia district gives rise to rumors about the construction of the steam railroads into that locality. Come and We Will Prove It to You with THE Edison Electric Co. Main 46 Phones Home 46 Cor. 4th and Sycamore St. SANTA ANA ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, JULY 5, 1906 Benedict-Smeltzer Railroad J. N. Patterson, right-of-way agent for the Southern Pacific railway, was in town this week, accompanied by Mrs. Patterson, having come from San Francisco to procure right of way for a railroad to be constructed between Benedict and Smeltzer. Mr. Patterson makes his headquarters at Westminster. He has been in the field for a week and is securing agreements from property-owners along the line of the proposed cut-off. Mr. Patterson was in Anaheim seven years ago, when he secured right of way for the Southern Pacific up town from Loara. At that time it was reported the company would build its line from this city to Placentia and on through Soquel canyon to a junction with its line at Chino. The Southern Pacific and Santa Fe companies shortly thereafter became first cousins, and the proposed road to Placentia was not constructed. Now that the Huntington electric road will shortly build into Placentia, it seems likely both steam roads will also enter that territory. Several thousand carloads of freight are shipped from Placentia annually, and if Huntington gets the initial haul to Los Angeles, he will route the cars east over whichever road he pleases. Asked if this road would be built, Mr. Patterson replied he and his wife tradition. At the corner of S and Los Angeles streets a of local enthusiasts pelted the by with roses. Several thousand carloads of freight are shipped from Placentia annually, and if Huntington gets the initial haul to Los Angeles, he will route the cars east over whichever road he pleases. Asked if this road would be built, Mr. Patterson replied he and his wife had had a most exciting experience in the San Francisco fire. Their hotel was destroyed and they suffered loss of much other property. Mr. Patterson is noted for saying nothing about the company's plans. The road from Benedict to Smeltzer is 10 miles in length, and will save a haul of 20 miles between the two places. At present the route from Smeltzer to a junction with the main line in this city is by way of Newport Beach and Santa Ana. The line from Smeltzer goes directly south and southeast for four miles to Newport Beach, and thence by a roundabout course to Benedict on the line between this city and Los Alamitos. The new line will run from Smeltzer directly north to Benedict. Three thousand cases of celery were shipped to market the past season by this circuitous route. There are several thousand carloads of beets and other products, butter, eggs, corn and potatoes, which will go over the new line. A mail route will probably be established over the new line, and mail for Garden Grove, Westminster and Smeltzer will probably go by way of this city instead of by the roundabout Santa Ana route when the line is completed. "We have been able to secure specimens of a rich grass that grows on a part of the desert absolutely devoid of moisture most of the year. Of course, these specimens come from about cacti where the shade of the thorny leaves offer relief from the direct blaze of the sun, but the possibilities of development offered by this grass are encouraging." Prof. Newell exhibited several specimens. The grass is of a very fine blade, somewhat on the order of a wire grass, having a yellow vein running down the center. No ordinary person would see in the grass anything of unusual interest, but Prof. Newell has an almost affectionate care for the little specimens. The new cement sidewalks have done a world of good toward beautifying the town. They attract new settlers. The paving of streets goes a step farther and a disposition exists among some of the property owners favoring paved streets. The committee will investigate and report at the next meeting.
