SHERWOOD ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE Mr. Sherwood seems to have taken a new tack in his position upon the Yorba reservoir. First he approved it; then, on being ousted from the position of engineer in charge of the work, he disapproved it; then he denied he had ever approved it; now he says his approval was because of a "certain definite object" had in view by him at the time! A shifty sort of a possum is this amusing fellow, truly; but we shall chase him around the stump again, knowing full well that when finally cornered and pinned down, he will either fall off into another doze or sit bolt upright and, staring the whole world in its face, deny he ever said so! In July, 1902, being at the time the engineer of the water company as well as a member of its board of directors, he secured the passage this latest swing up trapeze. "Certain pose" indeed! By his vision this man was when he made his seemingly has not yet from his infirmity. This gentleman's leisure merits little attention its points may be the brief review. One point to do away with night worthy of note, as being the most foolhardy pro-advanced by this oracle. He thereafter submitted a report cordially approving the site, using among other arguments the following: "In general, we find that at an average depth of 25 feet below the surface on the proposed dam line there is a stratum of tough bluish yellow clay, about 14 feet in thickness," etc. "Your committee sees no reason why a safe dam cannot be constructed at this place," etc. "There appears to be no reason why the height [of the dam] should not be increased from 5 to 10 feet," etc. In the Fullerton Tribune of Thursday last Mr. Sherwood, having in the mean time denied that he ever reported in favor of the reservoir, gives utterance to the following remarkable declaration: "It is my purpose to reserve for a future article the history of the Yorba reservoir. This will include an explanation of my so-called 'approval' of the project contained in the report of the committee appointed to make a 'further examination of the reservoir site' and which was couched in the particular language therein contained for a certain definite purpose." Talk about brilliant performances upon the flying trapeze! Mr. Sherwood is a wonder of wonders. He had in view a "certain definite purpose" when submitting his report approving the reservoir! His report, then, was not to have been trapeze? Really, the constructing cement ditches water into an "old abame ervoir," with a view to lay it to the surface several down the valley by plants, is too ludicrous thought by conservation. Perhaps it will do for Sherwood mayhap he has a "certa purpose" under cover; but not do for sensible irrigation are getting very tired of performances. "Second. The new Ana may be extended from it above Yorba, passing the site, and on through Rich connection with the old canal at the Santa Fe cross night reservoir would be by Yorba reservoir site; or the reservoir built as originally This reservoir would have been from the Cajon canal. The cost of the ditches by this about $17,000 exclusive of the a reservoir." Here Sherwood seems to himself of a gleam of retu intelligence, yet further climbs upon the trapeze and declares the reservoir worth $100,000. Engineer Kellogg mate places the figures at Why does Sherwood persist assertion that it will cost four times that amount? Sherwood denies that he ened to bring an injunct against the company, yet the word of two members board that he did so state accept their word in prefer his every time. His references to Mrs. berger, one of the largest holders in the company, giving much of her time to ing the interests of throughout the district, Messrs. Talk about brilliant performances upon the flying trapeze! Mr. Sherwood is a wonder of wonders. He had in view a "certain definite purpose" when submitting his report approving the reservoir! His report, then, was not to have been accepted at its face value by his associate directors, who were paying him the stockholders' money to further investigate the reservoir site and report upon it. If this statement be true, Sherwood was not only defrauding the company and his associate directors, but it stamps him as a person entirely unworthy of belief at this time. Has he any "definite purpose" in view in tying this additional knot in his ill-smelling record upon this enterprise? If the report was anything else than what it purported to be, this man was guilty of accepting money under false pretenses, and must be branded as a scoundrel without a single redeeming feature. Pray, tell us, was the man lying then, or is he lying now? Was he unworthy of belief then or is he unclean and untruthful now? His entire course has been so shifty, so oleaginous, so vile, that we merely smile at His references to Mrs. berger, one of the largest holders in the company, giving much of her time to ing the interests of throughout the district, Messrs. McLauchlin and Cson, whom he has failed to from the path of rectitude protestations and his three contemptible. No one but lost to all sense of the prow would stoop to such pusilla invective. The republicans of Orange county can enthusiastically endorse the principles enunciated by the convention which nominated Theodore Roosevelt for president. When the impartial historian of the future shall come to write the history of the country, the name of Roosevelt will be placed side by side with those of Washington and Lincoln: Washington, who threw off the yoke of foreign domination; Lincoln, who freed the country of the stigma of human slavery, and Roosevelt, who is making the fight of the common people against the encroachments of aggregated capital. We hope the convention will lead off in declaring that the president should and must stand for re-election. Let it be the first Caliifornia convention to so declare itself. The president has declared his purpose not again to be a candidate, but the interests of the people demand that he continue to guide the ship of state successfully through the shallows and shoals which beset its path. The republicans of Orange county and of California endorse the Panama canal, and indulge the hope that this isthmian water way may be speedily constructed and opened to the commerce of the world. The Pacific coast has an especial interest in the canal, as has also every state in the union. The republican policy of reclaiming the arid west, of conserving flood waters, of constructing great reservoirs to impound the priceless flow of torrential streams, the policy of reforestation—all are possessed of the greatest interest to our people as well as that which they desire. These are essentially western measures, although of much importance to the entire nation, and should meet with cordial approval at the hands of the first political convention to be held in California this year. Let the national and state administrations be endorsed, and let the convention declare for Roosevelt in 1908. SANTA ANA is after the Eighth congress district convention, and we hope Secretary Ulm of the county committee will be able to land it.
