CANDIDATE FOR SHERIFF.
C. E. Ruddock of Fullerton announces himself in our columns today as a candidate for sheriff, subject to the decision of the republican county convention. Mr. Ruddock has a good record as city marshal of our neighboring town, and has on various occasions proven himself to be absolutely fearless in the discharge of his duty. There are two conditions confronting his candidacy, which will doubtless be given thoughtful consideration by the voters of the county. One is the fact that his home town has at least two other aspirants for office at the coming election, and a fourth hanging on to the fringe of political society with a similar end in view. The second is that he has opposed to him, in the person of S. O. Walker of Buena Park, a veteran campaigner who corruption it exposes. His corruption that is not exonerated and the honor is due to the sane and writers, prosecuting attorneys other investigators who have a hand in the cleaning up political moral nastiness.
The very agents of the party have had a hand in what cently come to be called "mending." The report of Commander Garfield on the corruption Standard Oil company was raking of a sort. But it was for which the president highly mended him. The Interstate commerce commission is just engaged on a job of the same It is uncovering all sorts ofruption, collusion and law ing in the coal carrying bus It has only just touched one coal carrying roads and p will find things equally bad it comes to the hard coal oil roads. But no one is going accuse Chairman Knapp or a muckraker for all he may cover. The same is true of nor Folk and District A Jerome and a lot of other men of both parties all o country who are making a b of digging up corruption al ing that it is disposed of in effective and sanitary way.
No one need run away with idea that the president was at such men as these w
the voters of the county. One is the fact that his home town has at least two other aspirants for office at the coming election, and a fourth hanging on to the fringe of political society with a similar end in view. The second is that he has opposed to him, in the person of S. O. Walker of Buena Park, a veteran campaigner who has already made considerable headway in his fight for the nomination. To be sure, the nominating convention will scarcely allot four nominations to the bustling town of Fullerton, eager as their partisans may be to secure their selection. There are too many candidates for that, even if it were good politics to give three important nominations to one town.
Mr. Ruddock's candidacy would inevitably be strengthened were he the only Fullerton candidate, and his friends and supporters should see to it that not too many of the other fellows break off the reservation and announce themselves as candidates in the approaching campaign. There seems to be a multiplicity of candidates throughout the county, each prancing in his stall, and champing upon the bit, and it would seem to be advisable to apply the Osler process to some of them early in the game.
Personally Mr. Ruddock is a likely looking lad, and no doubt has a bright political future before him. We admit a liking for him, and should he land the nomination, shall whoop 'er up white for him and no mistake.

MAN WITH THE MUCK RAKE.
Naturally the president meant just what he said when he pitched into the man with the muck rake. But few of his public utterances have been more distorted and misunderstood. What the president was inveighing against was sensationalism, the baseless sensationalism that has happily almost run its course in the yellow and would-be-yellow journals of the country. This country has been undergoing a great wave of moral awakening and reform. In some quarters, and from purely sordid motives, the reform has verged on moral hysteria. It was this that the president was striking at. He did not mean that the exposure of corruption wherever it exists is muckraking. He knows, few know better, that there are moral plague spots all over this country and that they have to be raked. He knows, too, that they are as offensive to the men who have to do the raking as to the public that sees them uncovered. But work of this sort is clean in the doing, though it may be foul in the
Only once did the governor lose his head, on the occasion his memorable interview with unspeakable Schmitz over the ter's demand for the withdrawal of the military. We should have heard just what the ernor had to say to Mr. Schmaltz that occasion.

A letter received from a prominent politician of the north says San Francisco will not poll half its vote this year. As a result its influence in succeeding state conventions for years to come will be curtailed. For instance, two years hence its delegation, based upon this year's vote, will be half its present voting strength. The tens
San Francisco is the political center of the state has striking illustration in direful calamity which city almost totally from From Siskiyou to San Diego is doing in state polls the approaching camstined to go down into history as the quietest in of the commonwealth. It seems to be stirring bosom of the political Gov. Pardee has issued careful affair with nothing credit, and he is probably better liked man than before. Always with aquipose characterizing headed and cool in dishe has gone through the experiences with caution credit to himself, and his acts have brought him all parts of the state. Did the governor seem to lead, on the occasion of public interview with the Schmitz over the latent politician of the north says San Francisco will not poll half its vote this year. As a result its influence in succeeding state conventions for years to come will be curtailed. For instance, two years hence its delegation, based upon this year's vote, will be half its present voting strength. The tens of thousands of mechanics who will flock to that city from the east will have no vote this year. San Francisco must inevitably give up its hope for another congressman. Indeed its loss of voting strength, unless it be recovered by the time of the next federal census, may necessitate the inclusion of other counties to maintain its representation in the lower house of congress.
On the other hand, Southern California expects to gain two new congressmen by 1910. Los Angeles' great increase in population will entitle her to an additional congressman, even with the creation of San Antonio county, and the alteration of county lines consequent upon the formation of the city and county government. The four southern counties of Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego will doubtless be placed in a district by themselves. Perhaps San Antonio may be included, and perhaps San Bernardino may be thrown into the district to the north of us.
REDLANDS capital seems to be looking to Orange county for investment. A rumor on the streets this week is to the effect that the erection of a three-story brick hotel is being considered as an investment by moneyed men of the orange town, and that the enterprise may eventuate in the near future. The opening here for a new hotel is most alluring. Our lodging-houses turn away guests nightly, and private boarding-houses are numerous, in order to supply the demand. The opening here for a new hotel is most alluring. Our lodging-houses turn away guests nightly, and private boarding-houses are numerous, in order to supply the demand. Restaurants do a flourishing business. Yet it is true that people remain away owing to our inferior hotel accommodations.
Anaheim needs a first-class hotel and needs it bad. We trust these Redlands gentlemen will look into this matter carefully. There is money in it for them.
Speaker Cannon celebrated his seventieth birthday this week and remarked incidentally that if anything would reconcile him to having another Democrat in Congress it would be to have Dr. Osler take a seat on the left side of the House.
Admiral Deitrich's German squadron is to be held up a week while the "Dewey" (dry dock) goes through the Suez canal. The admiral must think that man Dewey is always getting in his way.
While the Interstate Commerce Commission is about it, they might ascertain the differential on Muckrakes and Whitewash Brushes from outside points to Washington.
It is very apparent that the press agent of the Metropolitan opera company was not killed in the San Francisco disaster.

Perspect of a war between Colonial Venezuela loses much of its so long as President Castro is there to get killed.
Communication has been received in Orange County Bar association Pardee relative to recent pass regarding the suicides. The governor stated realized the continuance of the night work a hardship to cer-but he had to consider the welfare of the state at large. He said that in declaring the holidays he was acting on the advice of the bank commissioners, and those versed in finance and law, and, until such time as it was deemed safe to discontinue said holidays he would have to declare them in force. He did not think that such holidays could possibly affect ordinary business, although it necessarily would retard legal jurisprudence.
