THE YORBA RESERVOIR.
Santa Ana, April 9, 1906.
EDITOR GAZETTE:—By special request of many of the stockholders of the A. U. W. Co. I have agreed to furnish some further information on the Yorba reservoir. To take up the matter consistently, in connection with your extract from Schuyler's report I will define his recommendations of which the reservoirs were fourth. First stating that this order of proceeding was concurred in, by all the directors and others, who were at that time making a study of the improvements and betternments of the water system.
1st Recommendation—"reconstruct and extend your canals and ditches, paving those passing over porous soils." A map was attached to this report upon which these ditches were outlined. By referring to this map we find that all these ditches have been built, except a small ditch from the intersection of Broadway and Walnut streets to the north-west corner of section 20, in West Anaheim. I might add that many additional ditches have been paved, putting this branch of the system well to the front. At that time it was considered that to carry an ample supply to points that might be reached within three-fourths of a mile, the smaller laterals to be constructed by the farmers, was all that could be afforded with the funds at command.
2d Recommendation—"regrade and extend the new Anaheim canal, for use in carrying winter water, and a distributing main during the summer." The upper section has been pay the interest and provide a funding fund which will pay off the inside of 20 years, it is a good investment. We will take liberal mates on the cost, and value water based on the figures charged by the water company. See if the comparison warrant investment, independent of the special advantages to individual shareholders and the general development of the company.
The Yorba reservoir has a capacity of 51,392,762 cubic feet, deductions per cent for evaporation and age, which is more than statistically low where the conditions arealar, we find the reservoir will surplus 15.86 cubit feet [793 inches] 12 days a day for a period of 60 days. Cents per hour per 100 inches [aimum charge for summer water this would amount to $3420, would be the interest on $48,77 per cent. Storage alone will justify the expenditure of the amount. In addition to this have the night water. The average irrigating season is 200 days; average flow to Anaheim is 600 cents. By using all this water and water at the difference in prices] the additional income will be $4320, the interest on $61,000 per cent.
The reservoir will cost $27,500 necessary ditches will cost $1 making an expenditure of $40,500 this addition to the irrigating tem, in complete working of The interest on this investment per cent amounts to $2835 annuity the increased income amount.
was considered that to carry an ample supply to points that might be reached within three-fourths of a mile, the smaller laterals to be constructed by the farmers, was all that could be afforded with the funds at command.
2d Recommendation — "regrade and extend the new Anaheim canal, for use in carrying winter water, and a distributing main during the summer." The upper section has been regraded, but no extension has been made; and the Anaheim section of the irrigation system has never been able to get any advantages from the surplus waters of the winter and spring; their supply being limited by the old flume through Yorba which only carries 900 inches of water at its best. The lack of a larger ditch to carry water to Anaheim has retarded its growth and prosperity; with its warm sandy soils it is adapted to the production of early crops promoted by winter and spring irrigation; compare the large volume of water carried by the Santa Ana system at this time, together with the resultant effects; in products and increased water sales, and you have a convincing illustration.
3d Recommendation — "reconstruct the branches of the Cajon canal, equalizing their grades by the construction of drops where the fall is excessive from the mesa to the low lands, the lining of them where the soil is so sandy as to cause considerable loss by percolation and the constructing of a new branch to the Hazard & Yarnell tract." All this work has been done, excepting that the Hazard & Yarnell ditch does not quite come up to the requirements outlined, and a part of the North branch ditch has not been enlarged to capacity outlined; but as the town of Fullerton has restricted the territory possibly the capacity was not needed. The greater portion of the ditches in Placentia have been cemented, placing that portion of the system in better condition than was hoped to be attained at that time.
The reservoir will cost $27,500 necessary ditches will cost $1 making an expenditure of $40,500 this addition to the irrigating tem, in complete working of The interest on this investment per cent amounts to $2835 annuity the increased income amount $7740, which leaves an annualance for sinking fund of $4905, will pay off the whole debt years. Since the matter of consi ning the reservoir was taken in 1901, I have made a special note the flow in the river and find that no year when it would not very more than have filled the reservoir.
The figures above given are conservative and show conclusive that all conditions are favorable to the construction of the reservoir.
My recent experience on the lands has convinced me that hydric sluicing would be the best method of construction on this dam much larger section would be required, which would add to its ability, but the material can be in so much cheaper that it would add to the cost of the dam. respectfully, H. Clay Kelley
NERVOUS PEOPLE.
Something You Ought to Know
"No nerves and never irritable This is what our well knownologist, O. A. Mullinix, says people port after taking Vinol. "It is markable," said Mr. Mullinix editor of the Gazette, "how many people buy sedatives and all sorts of ointment quiet and deaden the nerves, they are weakening their entire vous system by doing so.
"Nerve troubles are easily continued Mr. Mullinix. "It is a case of treating the general weakness not the nerves alone, and that if what Vinol does in the most direct simple manner possible. It nerve troubles because it builds up, and makes one strong all over invigorates the entire nervous system makes new blood and vitality."
outlined, and a part of the North branch ditch has not been enlarged to capacity outlined; but as the town of Fullerton has restricted the territory possibly the capacity was not needed. The greater portion of the ditches in Placentia have been cemented, placing that portion of the system in better condition than was hoped to be attained at that time. A retrospective view discloses that the First and Second recommendations have been met, and the betterments exceed the most sanguine hopes of that time. Therefore it can be no longer claimed that the time has not come for doing the work under the Second and Fourth heads.
4th Recommendation—[construction of reservoirs] this included the enlarging of the Tuffree reservoir to meet the extended requirements. This work was effectually done, about $7000 being expended on it in 1902. The second section of this division was the construction of the Yorba reservoir, which will not only store the night water for the Anaheim section, but will be of great value for storage.
I think the foregoing synopsis shows that one of the most urgent and necessary steps in the development of the system is now at hand, [the construction of this reservoir with the connecting ditches.] We will now take up the question, will it pay as a financial proposition for the company? I do not think any business man will deny that if it will
"Nerve troubles are easily continued Mr. Mullinix. "It is said a case of treating the general wear not the nerves alone, and that it what Vinol does in the most direct simple manner possible. It nerve troubles because it builds up, and makes one strong all over invigorates the entire nervous system makes new blood and vitality.
"Vinol contains no drugs, and know what you are taking—simple medicinal curatives found in coconut oil with a little organic iron added is fast superseding old forms of liver oil and emulsions because it delicious to the taste and has such velous vitalizing power.
It is for this reason that we every nervous, run-down and distressed person in Anaheim, try and if it does not cure you come and get your money." O. A. Murray druggist.

Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot the diseased portion of the ear. There one way to cure deafness, and that is institutional remedies. Deafness is caused an inflamed condition of the mucous lining the Eustachian Tube. When this tube flamed you have a rumbling sound orfect hearing, and when it is entirely deafness is the result, and unless the mation can be taken out and this stored to its normal condition, hearing be destroyed forever; nine cases out are caused by catarrh, which is not an inflamed condition of the mucous s

TRADE CONDITIONS GOOD
R. G. Dun & Co.'s. Monthly Review for March in Southern California.
Crop outlook continues good throughout this section. Rain was abundant and well timed. Never has the situation looked better to the farmer and orchardist. All mercantile business has a good tone. The rush of the tourist season is now on the decline. It has been the heaviest season Southern California has ever known. Not only has the presence of the tourist been felt in general trade channels but also in the real estate market. Tourists this year have given proof of their appreciation of Southern California's future by putting thousands of dollars in real estate here for investment and future home sites.
Orange market continues strong, demand is good, supply and distribution have been about right to make profitable prices. Returns have been given by good authority as about 75 per cent in advance of last season. Heavy cash buying still continues. About 3500 carloads of navels are still on the trees. The seedling market has not yet opened. There is a good speculative demand at $160 and $170 spot cash. There is a very active interest in Valencias. Shippers are not quoting prices. It is generally conceded that they will come high this year. It is reported that some have been contracted at 3½ and 4c. lb on trees.
Lemons are going out at the rate of about 20 carloads a day. The trade is good for this season of year and California product brings top prices. As supply of summer lemons from this section this year will be light, and importations of lemons from Mediterran-

At our well known drug-Mullinix, says people re-making Vinol. "It is reaald Mr. Mullinix to the Gazette, "how many peo-wes and all sorts of opiates leaden the nerves, when opening their entire ner-y doing so. Ables are easily cured," Mullinix. "It is simply ing the general weakness is alone, and that is just lies in the most direct and ever possible. It cures because it builds one is one strong all over. It entire nervous system, good and vitality.
Shippers are not quoting prices. It is generally conceded that they will come high this year. It is reported that some have been contracted at 3½ and 4c. lb on trees.
Lemons are going out at the rate of about 20 carloads a day. The trade is good for this season of year and California product brings top prices. As supply of summer lemons from this section this year will be light, and importations of lemons from Mediterranean districts will be 300,000 boxes short for the year, it is predicted that July and August will see highest prices ever paid for this fruit.
In cured fruit market, quotations generally remain unchanged. The offers of the Packers' association and California canners company to make a 3¼ a lb rate for this year's crop of raisins have destroyed any hopes of a successful pool by the raisin growers. Co-operative work in raisin marketing by growers seems to be difficult. Spot market is dull. It is believed summer prices for 2500 tons still remaining in state will be firm. Interest just now is directed to 1906 fancy seeded crop, although it is early for business in futures. It is said that packers are turning down orders at 6¢ f. o. b.
Wine makers are jubilant over the passage of the Needham bill taxing proof brandy. It will advance in price California stock of sweet wines now on hand.
Bean market is easy. About 150,000 sacks are still in warehouses, but will be out before new crop comes in. Santa Barbara and Ventura have put in about the same acreage, Los Angeles and Orange much larger than last year. There is a lighter planting of pinks as they have been a drug on the market.
A bumper crop of sugar beets is promised. The acreage is largest ever planted in this section. The three factories will run full capacity and the campaign will be one month longer than usual. It is believed the output will reach a hundred million pounds. Copious rains have weakened honey market. Oil industry is getting into good shape. Demand now nearly equals supply, and price is advancing.
