Starbuck, Fullerton, Cal. mch29 STATE POLITICS B. Edson of Siskiyou county announces his candidacy for governor in the gubernatorial election may not be commended by regular politicians who incline to motion that an aspirant should first run the railroad indorsement of his candidacy, but the Edson style may accrue with the popular sense of right fitness. The other avowed aspirants for governor in the republican column are George C. Pardee of Alameda, J. N. Scott of Humboldt, Warren R. Porter Santa Cruz and Frank H. Short of Noo. It has been 'demonstrated "good can come out of Siskiyou," one of the best governors California ever had, William Irwin, came that county. He was nominated 175 at a democratic convention at San Francisco. He was elected number 1, 1875, and inaugurated number 9 of the same year. He died on 15, 1886. He was succeeded by George C. Perkins, who was elected number 3, 1879, and inaugurated January 8, 1880. B. Edson was elected railway missioner, first district, on November 1898. He received 42,106 votes, just 38,121 for his opponent, H. M. Lane of Sacramento. Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and Sacra-are said to be in the field for the American state convention. Santa Cruz is neither adequate hotel accommodations nor a suitable hall; we if Santa Rosa has either; andamento is certainly lacking in these essentials, to say nothing of agreeable summer climate. MARIE CASSOU, Administratrix of Estate of Josephine Blanchard, deceased: Gillett it does not follow that we do not appreciate Dr. Pardee at his full worth as a cultivated gentleman, of large experience in public affairs and whose administration has been free from the slightest breath of scandal. Nor can any one question the import- San Francisco newspaper corrections are very busy picking out states for governor just now and them gives the following point—the democratic situation: The democratic side District At-Langdon of San Francisco has not in training for the gubernatorial contest. His raids upon the states, and daily declarations of his purpose to purify San Francisco being used for advertising and boom purposes. Already he has become the vogue with politically ambitious democrats, been dined by former Mayor D. Phelan and similarly distinquished Bourbons. The democrats tend take to make nominations control the political mechanism party had it in mind at one put Francis J. Heney, the law was conspicuous in the federal cases, in the fight for theorship, but they no longer end that purpose. William H. of the state board of equalization also discussed, but now Langham is the center of the Bourbon stage." Political prophet seems to be right of District Attorney Seymour Sacramento, the Folk of Californiacertainly will have to be with when the conventionapa Journal states positively her Congressman Bell is not a candidate for the gubernatorial nomination the democratic ticket, but be a candidate for congress Duncan McKinlay. As the is printed in Bell's home town presumed that it states Bell's incorrectly. McKinlay is at Gillett it does not follow that we do not appreciate Dr. Pardee at his full worth as a cultivated gentleman, of large experience in public affairs and whose administration has been free from the slightest breath of scandal. Nor can any one question the importance and value of the people of such proposed measures initiated by him as, for example, reform in the taxation system. And whether Mr. Gillett, Dr. Pardee or any one of similar high standing be nominated we feel assured that every republican will be for him with the most unfaltering loyalty." There appears to be no lack of candidates for the appellate court for the southern district. It seems to be generally conceded that the republicans will nominate Judge Gray of Tulare and Judge Allen of Los Angeles, two of the incumbents. But the third member of the court, George H. Smith of Los Angeles, is a democrat, and the republicans will name a republican to succeed him. The following gentlemen are said to already be in the field either as active or receptive candidates: Victor Shaw and M. L. Ward of San Diego, Judge West of Orange, Judges Wilbur, York and B. N. Smith of Los Angeles, and Judge Oster of San Bernardino. Several of Oster's friends claim that he will be a candidate for the supreme court, and will not enter the contest for the appellate nomination, but no official statement on that point has come from him. There will certainly be no lack of good timber from which to make a choice. The Sacramento Bee which supported Lane four years ago hands out the following good piece to the republicans: "The truth of the matter is, that George C. Pardee is about the only man whom the republicans of California have a good chance to elect governor at the next election." Sometimes it is wise to heed the advice of a democratic or independent paper, and this is one of the times. NOTICE Chance in time on Southern Pacific APA Journal states positively that Congressman Bell is not a candidate for the gubernatorial nomination in the democratic ticket, but to be a candidate for congress Duncan McKinlay. As the paper is printed in Bell's home town, it presumed that it states Bell's incorrectly. McKinlay is at engaged in a bitter controversy Editor Lemmon of the Santa Monica publican, who does not hesitate all the congressman a liar. "In December of the year 1732," says Bigelow's "Life of Franklin," "Franklin commenced the publication of what he styled 'Poor Richard's Almanac,' price fivepence. It attained an astonishing popularity, and at once. Three editions were sold within the month of its appearance. The average sale for twenty-five years was 10,000 a year. He was sometimes obliged to put it to press in October to get a supply of copies to the remote colonies by the beginning of the year. It has been translated into nearly if not quite every written language, and several different translations of it have been made into the French and the German.
