WHITTIER ENTHUSES OVER ORANGE COUNTY Sentiment Most Favorable in the Foothill Town for Inclusion in the Gem County A delegation of citizens from Anaheim and Fullerton held a conference with the Whittier chamber of commerce on Thursday evening and discussed the position of that city with reference to the coming consolidation of the city and county of Los Angeles. That the Orange people were aware of the friendly feeling of Whittier toward this county is well-known, but that they were prepared for the enthusiastic desire of its citizens to come into this county is greatly to be doubted. It may be stated at the outset that so far as the proposed new county of Pomona is concerned, there is not one citizen of Whittier who is not out and out against being taken in by that county. Neither are the Whittier citizens apathetic as to Pomona county. As Mr. Schofield said, they would fight inclusion in that county to the very possible at the last minute to pany the delegation. The meeting was called to oro'clock at the city hall with a number of Whittier people professor Tebbets presided, and adwere delivered by the chairmSchofield, Mr. McNease, Mr. Mr. Starbuck and others. He added that if Whittier were sought to be included in that county its citizens would send a strong lobby to Sacramento to work against that measure. The visiting delegation was composed of Dr. Freeman and W. T. Brown of Fullerton, and J. B. Rea, W. H. Spake and Henry Kuchel of this city. It was declared that Orange county had whatever in Whittier's airs, except such neighborly good section may have and would have none until Los Angeles, by placing line of the consolidated Gabriel river, should place inside its domains. Whittier and its environs in-age county would be the wealth and population in California, giving it a state saying he had been unable to get the committee together since the meeting. "I believe the time has now arrived," he said, "when we must act. Three of our committee were appointed to confer with Los Angeles, three were to go to Orange county and three were to take care of Pomona. I have not been able to get these gentlemen together, but if they do not come together immediately I propose to fire the whole lot and appoint men with enough public spirit to take these matters up for earnest consideration. [Laughter and applause.] "I doubt very much if we want any of Greater Los Angeles. There are only two men out of the Committee of Twenty who favor Greater Los Angeles." A gentleman present said he favored that project as well as the two others named by the speaker. "Then you make the third," continued Mr. Schofield, warming up, "and the other seventeen favor going into Orange county. [Applause.] "I say if there exists a disposition on the part of Los Angeles and Pomona to place us in Pomona county, now is the time to act, and we must act vigorously. There is not a man in Whittier, Rivera, Los Nietos or all this valley who would for an instant favor going into Pomona county. "Personally I am against Greater Los Angeles. I didn’t want any of the Owens river water. We have aplenty of our own, and we must see to it that when county division comes the lines are not so drawn as to deprive us of our water rights. I am for going into Orange county at the very first opportunity. [Applause.] Whittier is strong enough to be given respectful attention by Los Angeles. We used to be an infant in arms, but are a pretty big boy now. I propose that we go to Los Angeles and say to them that if they dare place us in Pomona county, they need not expect a vote in all this valley for their candidates next fall. "I am glad these gentlemen from Orange county have come up here to warm us up. Now, I am going to call our committee together tomorrow or next day, and if the members do not take sufficient interest in the future welfare to come out and attend the meeting, I propose to appoint others who will do so." One gentleman said he preferred to remain in Los Angeles county as it is, and if county division came he would rather be in Greater Los Angeles. Mr. Schofield said the sentiment of the entire people, so far as he could determine by conversing with them, was almost unanimously in favor of going into Orange county. Mr. Montgomery said people west of San Gabriel river as far as Old river, including Rivera and Downey, favored coming into Orange county, rather than standing for Greater Los Angeles. References to Orange county were particularly felicitous on the part of other speakers. J. B. Rea, Dr. Freeman, Mr. Brown and W. H. Spake extended an invitation in behalf of their respective chambers of commerce to the people of Whittier to visit Orange county, learn of its advantages and become better acquainted with people having a community of interest with them. Several citizens have been mentioned for city trustee, and some of them have declined to stand for the honor. C. O. Rust and Wm. Schwenckert will probably stand for re-election, and Louie Kroeger has been persuaded to enter the lists. Among others named are W. H. Spake, Ben Dauser, H. M. Adams, L. E. Miller, C. F. Grim, Capt. Stern and B. V. Beebe. It is proper to add that most if not all of these gentlemen have declined to run, but the consensus of public opinion is that when the city calls a good citizen has no right to turn a deaf ear to his constituents. Probably some of these gentlemen will be induced to stand for 'member of the board. Four are to be elected. For city treasurer the incumbent, John Hartung, will be up for re-election, and Joseph Helmsen will contest the honor with him. Both are well-known representative citizens, and friends of each have already begun an active canvass in support of the candidacy of each. The position is one of great responsibility and importance, and a spirited though good-natured fight is on for the place. For Marshal, N. F. Steadman, who has held the office fourteen years, will have the active opposition of M. H. Litten, who until recently has been nightwatchman, and who has a good record as an officer in pursuit of criminals. Friends of John Brunworth are supporting him for the place, and a three-cornered contest may result. City Clerk Merritt has no opposition so far and may be slated for a walk-over. Merritt has been an efficient officer, making the best city clerk the town ever had, and he has been extending the glad hand assiduously of late. Merritt is a mixer from Mixerville. Sunday closing of saloons will be actively contested by those engaged in the liquor business and their friends, while the measure will be supported by those favoring a quieter Sabbath. A warm fight is on and partisans of both sides are making it lively. Have You Registered? If your name is on the great register it is not necessary for you to register for the spring election.
