Is the walnut blight caused by insects which formerly furnished food for birds in the groves, but which are now being exterminated by the gun of the sportsman? This is the theory of one of the county's oldest and most successful growers, Mr. Burdorf of Fullerton, who states that when his walnut trees furnished nesting places to hundreds of doves he was never troubled with the blight. The pest he thinks is spread by insects which formerly fell a prey to these birds. As the birds have been decreasing in number year by year, the blight has shown a corresponding increase in its virulence. Mr. Burdorf suggests that the time has arrived for the protection of these feathered friends of the orchardist. The suggestion merits the careful consideration of our law-makers. The Weekly Gazette. That people of California interested in having the state up with a good class of citizens evidenced by the numerosity In people in this neck of the woods are disposed to become impatient relative to the delay of the commission to select a site for the pathological station, let them take comfort from the fact that their brethren of the north are no nearer the achievement of their ambition than are we. An experimental farm is to be located in the north, and the commission selected to pick out a site is having the time of its life in locating it. A dozen or more places are after it, and at night the horizon seems suffused with a ruddy glow all the way from Yolo to Knight's Landing. The attempt of the commission to select a site for the Southern California station is smooth as a mid-summer night's dream, even though no conclusion has as yet been arrived at, compared with the raucous hair-pulling of the northern citrus belt. The northern commission met at Sacramento last week, and after ineffectually considering the subject voted to refer the whole matter to Prof. Wickson, to whom had also been referred the task of selecting a site for the Southern California station. Prof. Wickson is not a member of the up-country commission, and his selection reflects upon him no little honor. That he will pick the best site for each station, south as well as north, goes without saying, and that Orange county will be chosen for the first-named place, we believe as firmly today as we did two That people of California interested in having the state up with a good class of citizens evidenced by the numerous sponses from the notices print this and other papers over state, asking that names of friends be sent to the California Promotion Committee at San Francisco. The committee has received hundreds of answers and hard literature and personal letters of the parties named in the sponses. Already a partial letter has been attained as some are have been received from the erners who are sitting close to fires when they receive the nature telling of the balmy climate California and showing so wonderful productions of state. Gus Hansen reports from Buena Park that since the advent of the electric railway he receives an enhanced price of 15 cents per hundred pounds for his milk which he ships to Los Angeles instead of delivering it to the condenser. The new market brings him not only the increased price, but he saves a four-mile haul in the bargain. He ships 1000 pounds of milk to Los Angeles daily, and informs us that from his immediate section a carload of milk, exceeding 10,000 pounds, is forwarded to the city each morning. Mr. Hansen figures his increased profits at $45 per month cash, with no reference to the saving of a four-mile haul to the condenser. By a little computation it is seen that the increased Naval officers are looking ward with keen interest to the commendations upon which Secretary Bonaparte is at work reeling the increase of the navy is known to favor battleship torpedo boats, and it is expected he will be influenced by the sentiment, which seems now against any other type of especially the old-time commanders and gunboats. held among some of the secret advisers that the service enough of the ships of the army cruiser and the gunboat class as an evidence of this example given of the policy of sending the navy yards the ships of types which are considered a longer available for duty. secretary is likely to accept view that the service shall maintained by having battles and torpedo boats provided for the next naval bill. It was located in the spring of 1890, when Richard Gird was the millionaire owner of the broad acres of the Chino ranch. The citizens of Pomona raised about $2000 for the experiment station buildings, and Mr. Gird gave the use of the land for as long a period as the state wished to use it for agricultural experiments. Now the whole property reverts to him. His fortune has since taken wings and flown. The little property was a very small thing to him in 1890, but it means considerable to him now in his increased years and his changed fortune. The past week saw the revergion of this property to Richard Gird. The station affairs are being closed up by J. W. Mills of Pomona. The Chino station has for years been one of the most valuable experiment stations in California, and its abandonment was forced by the action of the last legislature in providing for an experiment farm and pathological laboratory. What was bare land when it was donated to the state several years ago is now a valuable property containing a fine residence and other buildings, handsome grounds, rare plants and trees and nearly forty acres of citrus and deciduous fruit orchards and vineyards and experimental grounds. All these improvements are now acquired by Gird to compensate him for the use of the land by the state. It is more than probable that Mr. Gird will make his home at the station. The initial copy of the Santa Ana Daily Register has been received. The new candidate for public favor is a seven column eight page evening publication, its stockholders including a number of citizens of the county seat, among them James McFadden, who is presumed to be the originator of the enterprise. The Register is well filled with local news, is typographically neat and begins with a reasonably good share of advertising patronage. Santa Ana is a growing town, and we doubt not the new paper will prove successful. There would seem to be an excellent prospect of including Whittier in Orange county, along with La Mirada, Artesia, Norwalk and the section lying this side of New river, when Los Angeles comes finally to erect itself into a consolidated city and county government. Indeed, reports from Whittier say indications point strongly to that state of affairs, and that efforts are making to lay the matter squarely before the people of the foothill town. An item in another column sheds considerable light upon this interesting question. Whatever the outcome, let our friends at Sfficers are looking for keen interest to the reasons upon which Secretary is at work respect- ease of the navy. Through Senator Dick and Representative Hull, the National guard of the United States will ask of congress, $1,000,000 appropriation additional to the $2,000,000 now annually appropriated. While the main purpose of this request is to provide for target practice and rifle ranges for the guard, beyond what they have been able to secure heretofore, it also intends that this money, if secured, shall be used to provide guard organizations with things which the war department does not feel authorized to issue under the terms of the Dick militia law as it stands. Under the terms of this bill it is proposed to give the secretary of war broad power to allow such expenditure by the guard as he shall deem to be for "military purposes."
