Impoverished Soil Impoverished soil, like impoverished blood, needs a proper fertilizer. A chemist by analyzing the soil can tell you what fertilizer to use for different products. If your blood is impoverished your doctor will tell you what you need to fertilize it and give it the rich, red corpuscles that are lacking in it. It may be you need a tonic, but more likely you need a concentrated fat food, and fat is the element lacking in your system. There is no fat food that is so easily digested and assimilated as Scott's Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil It will nourish and strengthen the body when milk and cream fail to do it. It is expected before planting time the amount will be in the hands of people for whom it is in demand. Several years congress has approved $290,000 for this purpose, portion of that amount is used in experiments and other matters. The bulk of the 10 packages is subject to the senators and representatives constituents, the secretary culture reserving one-fifth of the amount to supply the staprop correspondents, the bureau and for other purposes. Neither has made any showing that can be called promising, and public sentiment, so far as it has crystalized, seems to demand the nomination of men of much stronger types than either. "With Hearst leading a government ownership ticket in 1908, and Bryan heading that kind of a platform in the democratic party, the republicans, if hoping for success, would hardly feel justified in picking any such man as either Fairbanks or Shaw as its standard bearer. Practically all talk of republican candidates has been for some time confined to Taft and Root. Jerome, when widely known over the country, it is claimed by New Yorkers, will be found to lack several of the traits of character essential in strong presidential candidates. Conceding that he has done a really wonderful work in that city, it is pointed out—and this by men who have no prejudice against him—that he is vain-glorious, volatile, whimsical and eccentric to an unusual degree. 'I have some literary men stopping here,' the landlord went on. 'Well, I'm rather glad of that,' said I. 'Yes,' said the landlord, 'I like literary men. They never object to paying in advance. They are used to it.'" Trade With Germany WASHINGTON, Nov. 26.—Germany will present a very stiff case to the United States when the time comes in congress during the session now about to begin to consider measures for protecting American trade from the results of the new German trade treaty, which will go into effect in March. And it will be a case that will cause a good deal of squirming in the seats occupied by the stand-patters. Nothing could be more polite than Germany's attitude—nothing farther removed from any suggestion or coercion. Germany has made a new tariff, which increases the duties upon many commodities, but that is just what we ourselves have done many times. Nothing could be more polite than Germany's attitude—nothing farther removed from any suggestion or coercion. Germany has made a new tariff, which increases the duties upon many commodities, but that is just what we ourselves have done many times. The German tariff provides for reduced duties upon the products of countries which will reciprocate the favor, but so does ours, and although the senate has not permitted this feature of the law to become effective, that failure does not alter the fact. Germany has concluded trade treaties with seven other European countries under which they will get much lower rates, and our own commerce with Germany will suffer correspondingly. But how can we complain when Germany, in the most polite manner possible, informs us that nothing would please her more than to extend the same favors to us if we will entertain the proposal. If the senate declines to be moved from its stand-pat position upon it will fall the full responsibility for what may happen. Next to the British market the German market is of most advantage to us. During the fiscal year 1904 our German exports aggregated in value $214,780,000. Much of this trade will be destroyed by the new tariff unless the senate can be made to do business.
