The esteemed Press of Riverside, referring at some length to the position of that county upon the state laboratory and experiment station soon to be located in Southern California, concludes with the following paragraph:
Anaheim has no occasion to antagonize Riverside in this matter. What Anaheim wants is the pathological laboratory and what Riverside wants is the citrus experiment station. That was what the bill originally framed here provided for and the pathological laboratory feature was brought into the measure by a combination with the bill which originated in Orange county. The commission can combine the two institutions if it chooses, but the impression seems to be quite general that it will not do so. If a division is made, the natural place undoubtedly for the citrus experiment station is in Riverside county and Orange county would have strong claims for the pathological laboratory. If the commission decides not to separate the two institutions provided for in the bill Riverside would be glad to see both located here, but the main thing we are after is the experiment farm; and we shall have no quarrel with Orange county if it the Los Angeles meeting, laboratory and experiment will be located jointly in the city offering the site best ad the successful operation of institutions. Nor did the side delegates fail to so und it. That the governor was pressed with the fact that R wanted the laboratory, is ed by his question:
"If the laboratory were sit Riverside, could it advantage handle the walnut blight?"

If the commission decides not to separate the two institutions provided for in the bill Riverside would be glad to see both located here, but the main thing we are after is the experiment farm; and we shall have no quarrel with Orange county if it secures the laboratory. And as Anaheim is only asking for the laboratory, it strikes us as very poor policy for the Gazette to indulge in any knocking of Riverside.
Still harping upon the "citrus experiment station," which is not in evidence, and therefore not before the commission. The bill referred to by the Press as originally framed at Riverside did provide for such a station; it was essentially a Riverside measure, and had no reference to the necessity for experimentation in other branches of agriculture—it was for citrus culture alone, with no provision for the claims of deciduous fruits upon the commonwealth. This bill was very properly objected to by Gov. Pardee, who disapproved an appropriation of $50,000 as excessive, and informed those interested that the experiment station must (1) get along with a lesser appropriation, and (2) must include deciduous as well as citrus fruits—in a word that it must be an agricultural experiment station and not an institution applying solely to one special branch of the industry. Thereupon the Riverside bill very properly dropped out of sight.
As early as November of last year a meeting of orchardists was held at the chamber of commerce in Los Angeles for the purpose of asking state aid in combatting diseases affecting deciduous trees. The Riverside project had already been heard of and was disapproved.
A half dozen Whittier d protested it could not. Its side did not want the lab why did it permit its cha getting the experiment sta rest under this Whittier Harp as they may upon th ment that they wanted only these state institutions and other, evidence is not lacking away down in their hearts a feeling for both of them desired only the exper imation, why did not their reptives so state?

As early as November of last year a meeting of orchardists was held at the chamber of commerce in Los Angeles for the purpose of asking state aid in combatting diseases affecting deciduous trees. The Riverside project had already been heard of and was disapproved, the growers present at the meeting insisting that if an experiment station be established at all it provide for the whole range of agricultural products, and not for one branch alone. Delegates were present from every county in Southern California and a committee was appointed to draft a bill embodying the ideas of the meeting and to present it to the legislature. Mr. Neff of this city was appointed committeeman from Orange county, and at a subsequent meeting of the committee was selected to represent the entire committee at Sacramento and take full charge of the bill. That is how far the present bill "originated in Orange county." The Riverside bill, drafted by Riverside orange-growers, was sectional and narrow; the bill which became law was the outgrowth of a combined demand for relief upon the part of the people of Southern California.
The opinion prevails here, and had added force imparted to it at
Angeles meeting, that the city and experiment station located jointly in the locality the site best adapted to successful operation of these plants. More importance has hereabout to the labor at Riverside, and those it to pass judgment upon on are of opinion experien will be carried on in now growing. This is quite freely discuss Los Angeles meeting, the of opinion seeming to be of such procedure, which might upheld by both Mr. Neff and Mr. Neff. From ment on the two instituted, or were joined as possible with events yet sure. Nor did the Riverates fail to so understand the governor was also imit the fact that Riverside laboratory, is evidence question: Laboratory were situated at could it advantageously walnut blight?"
Dozen Whittier delegates it could not. If River-ot want the laboratory, it permit its chances for the experiment station to alter this Whittier stain? they may upon the state they wanted only one of the institutions and not the violence is not lacking that
The air is filled with rumors of electric railroads. A party of Pacific Electric surveyors is engaged in running a preliminary line for a road connecting Santa Ana and River-side, by way of Orange, Olive and the river canyon. The object is to connect the two points with an electric line to Huntington Beach. Anaheim occupies a position in an exact line from the mouth of river canyon and Huntington Beach, and right of way can be secured through this territory for the road. It would be a mistake to run the Huntington Beach line along any other route than through this city. The construction of the line from Whittier to Santa Ana was made possible mainly by the refusal of the La Habra people to grant free right of way through their section. We have it on undisputable authority that the La Habra people are anxious to give right of way through their valley. They see property values doubling and trebling along the line from Watts to Santa Ana, and are "sore" over their policy of two years ago. We should get in touch with La Habra and Whittier whither the line should be extended hitherward, through La Habra and Fullerton. We should sit up and take notice of what Santa Ana is doing with reference to the Riverside-Huntington Beach extension. The chamber of commerce at its meeting this
their policy of two years ago. We should get in touch with La Habra and Whittier whither the line should be extended hitherward, through La Habra and Fullerton. We should sit up and take notice of what Santa Ana is doing with reference to the Riverside-Huntington Beach extension. The chamber of commerce at its meeting this evening will probably take action along these lines. Let us get in closer touch with these outlying points. Let us remember that millions of dollars are being expended by Mr. Huntington in extending his inter-urban system of railways. Mr. Huntington and Mr. Pillsbury know this section. They have driven over it and are favorably impressed with it. The Pacific Electric road some time ago secured right of way through Anaheim. Let us see if this evident purpose on the part of the company to construct its road hitherward may not be taken up again. Let us get busy. Southern California is going ahead by leaps and bounds. We are feeling the impetus of this development here in Anaheim and surrounding country. What we need in our business is a line of electric railway radiating from Anaheim to all these points.
The Santa Ana chamber of commerce gave a banquet at the Rossmore hotel last night in honor of the completion of the electric line into that city. An unfeeling marshal, mindful of the proprieties of the situation, raided the "blind pig" in the hotel and confiscated 600 bottles of beer and 65 flasks of whiskey. However, the banquet was a large success.

may be confidentially in the not distant future. Anaheim wants is the most connection with Los Angeles as with Santa Ana. It seems to us, is by La Habra and Whittier. The La Habra people are proud to grant right of way electric line, whereas two they asked exhorbitant it. However, the route reversed may take care of the future. What we want connection with the out- Santa Ana is moving electric line connecting that Riverside, by way of Or-Olive. If this line be will leave Anaheim, Ful-Acentia and Buena Park consideration altogether. Cons of these communities restir themselves. They up and take notice of being on about them. We busy with Mr. Huntington's Pillsbury. We believe may can be procured. At let us put shoulders to and see if it cannot be soon as the committees Mr. Huntington's board may be possible that route it may be selected, run and work on right of
Statesman Reuf has come to Los Angeles proffering a bill to Republicans relative to the approaching state campaign. Reuf is impressed with the adaptability of Schmitz for the gubernatorial nomination, adding that both have a feeling in their heart for the grand old party. These worthies may pass current in the Bay City; but Schmits for governor! God help the state!
