COUNTY NEWS IN BRIEF.
SANTA ANA, NOV. 9.—A lively scrap over the possession of a ranch at Capistrano, valued at $30,000, has developed in the attempt of heirs of the Andrew McNally estate to oust from the place Mrs. Eleanor Belford, who has lived there in undisputed possession for many years. The McNally heirs, on the showing that they held the title to the property, secured an order from the superior court instructing the sheriff to eject Mrs. Belford. Sheriff Lacy thought he had accomplished the job peaceably through the aid of friends of Mrs. Belford, but this week he was obliged to go back and take forcible possession of the place, putting two deputies in control of the house.
Meanwhile, the San Juan Land company, of which Mrs. Belford's brother is a member, filed suit asking the court to declare null and void the title held to the land by the McNally heirs, because the McNally interest in the ranch should rightfully be a mortgage for $16,000, and not a title. Their grounds for the suit are alleged mistakes in making out and signing papers several years ago, when McNally first aquired an interest in the property.
Mrs. Belford herself appeared in court and recited her troubles to Judge West, finally securing a stay of execution in the court's original ejection order. Armed with this she went back to Capistrano, and unless there are new developments, will remain in possession of the place until the settlement of the legal contest between the McNally heirs and the San Juan Land company.
William Newton Tedford, who settled in the Santa Ana valley in 1868, when there were only fifty white persons in this entire district, died at his home in Santa Ana on Thursday. Mr. Tedford was 80 years old, having been born in 1825 in Lincoln county, Tenn.

William Newton Tedford, who settled in the Santa Ana valley in 1868, when there were only fifty white persons in this entire district, died at his home in Santa Ana on Thursday. Mr. Tedford was 80 years old, having been born in 1825 in Lincoln county, Tenn.
At the age of 30 he moved to Missouri, and six years later, in 1864, came overland by prairie schooner to California, bringing with him his wife and five children. The journey across country was made with sixteen wagon teams, and was attended by fights with the Indians, and other hardships. After living two years in Solano county and two in Monterey, Mr. Tedford came to the Santa Ana valley in 1868 and has made his home here since, spending most of the time as an active rancher. On the second board of supervisors for this county, Mr. Tedford represented the Santa Ana district.
Mr. Tedford was the father of ten children, and these all, with his widow, survive him.
