When the location has been chosen by the commission, the Regents are directed by the act to construct a building for the laboratory; to equip the laboratory; and to receive and manage such gifts or bequests as may be made. The act directs that the commis-sion shall also establish and main-tain a branch agricultural experiment station or stations in Southern California, to carry on experimental and investigational work in connec-tion with the agricultural experiment work of the University of Cali-foria in regard to the best methods of horticultural management, fertilization, irrigation, the handling of fruit for market, the introduction of new varieties of fruit, and such other investigations as may be deemed ad-visable to promote the horticultural interests of the district. It is required that should the station be located at Whittier or Patton on lands already owned by the state, that not more than fifty acres shall be embraced in the station and that in any case the land shall be supplied with sufficient water for proper irrigation. The Regents are directed to adopt a general plan and schedule before the beginning of each fiscal year which shall describe the investigations and experiments to be pursued during the year, and it is the duty of the Regents to receive and consider written statements from individuals and associations interest. State's Mineral Wealth The state mineralogist reports that the mineral products of California in 1904 were worth $5,019,040 more than those of the preceding year. The total value for 1904 was $43,778,348 and for 1903 it was $37,759,308. The total value of the metallic substance mined in this state in 1904, including precious metals, was $25,114,-699. Among the substances that receive special mention are gold, silver, pyrites, quicksilver, copper, lead, manganese, platinum and chrome. The total value of non-metallic substances mined was $2,131,369. The leading item of mineral production in 1904 was gold, and this represented $19,109,600. The copper amounted to 29.974,154 pounds, worth $3,369,-995. The output of cement reached a total of 969,538 barrels in 1904 and the value is fixed at $1,500,000. The total value of one year's output of structural materials was $7,274,846. The hydro-carbons, including asphalt, bituminous rock, natural gas and petroleum were valued at $9,257,434.
