Washington, Sept. 19.—To carry 50 passengers over 7,250,000 through the streets of Nottingham, England, with a loss of on-site in three years is a feat finished by the municipally-street railway lines of that ordering to the report made department of commerce and Consul Mahin at Nottingham street railway "undertaking," as the gas and water supply run by the municipalityingham, showed a profit to of nearly $300,000 for the closing March 31, 1905.

Pardee, as commander-in-chief, at the recommendation of Adj.-Gen. J. B. Lauck and Inspector-General Wilhelm, will order that the band be mustered out.
In his recommendation to the Governor, Gen. Lauck makes the following statement: "The organization in question refused to parade on Memorial Day, May 30, 1905, after having been ordered to do so, and it is questionable if the organization could be depended upon at any time under similar circumstances to those existing as mentioned, this being the second offense of this kind committed by this organization.
"When the members of an organization of the National Guard so far forget their duty as to refuse to parade because of their connection with a labor union on a day sacred to the memory of those brave men who, in the Mexican War, the Civil War, or the war with Spain gave their lives to their country, it is time that measures be taken to rid the services of such an organization, and I therefore recommend that the organization be mustered out of the service.
"This recommendation is not made for the reason that the organization mustered out is connected with a labor union, but because the members thereof willfully disobeyed the orders of superior authorities."

THE WALNUT CROP.
“According to the most reliable information obtainable,” writes the American Nut Journal, “the walnut crop is not as promising as it was last year at this time.” The reports collected by this paper, and upon which the above general statement is based, come from widely separated portions of the producing countries, showing that the writers have no connection with each other. The field covered is both the home one, and also the foreign producing localities, and from all quarters come reports of light crops. The following statement is made in regard to California: “One section of the State reports a shortage varying from 20 to 35 per cent. The short crop conditions appears to be general throughout Southern California, and so far as information has been received from the northern part of the State, substantially the same condition appears to exist. The peculiar conditions this year is the appearance of a second crop of small nuts, but whether these will mature into marketable nuts is a question. The difficulty in California is said to arise from the fact that the trees failed to put out leaves this year until two or three weeks later than usual. This retarded flowering, and that naturally led to a retarded growth all along the line. Very little blight is reported in California this year. The total California crop is estimated at 600 cars, which, according to some authorities, will not satisfy the requirements of the West, provided opening prices are not too high.”

California Fruits
An article in Harper's Weekly from the pen of F. W. Hewes gives some interesting facts. Among other things we learn that it took last year 13,000 fruit cars, each carrying fifty tons to take the California grapes to their markets in the East. Raisins, first produced in 1867, became of commercial note in 1873. This branch is carried on in California only. It takes from three to four pounds of grapes for one pound of raisins, and production

about 6-10 of a cent. Sales have been made at much lower prices. In California good grape lands cost about $200 per acre; cultivation $40 to $75 per acre; returns range from $125 to $500 per acre. Many California vineyards contain 500 acres each. The larger ones cover from 1000 to 2500 acres each. That of the late Leland Stanford was over seven miles long, and contained nearly 5000 acres.
