HIGH PRICES FOR LEMONS The California Fruit Growers' Exchange sold during the year ending Sept. 1, eleven cars of lemons that ranged in price from $2000 and $2252 each, net, f. o. b. California, about $7 a box, cash, f. o. b., for the entire eleven cars. In addition to this, the Exchange also sold through the year more than 300 cars of lemons that netted between $1000 and $2000 each, cash, f. o. b. California. California lemons occupy a position in the markets of the United States that they have never before occupied, and while Sicily will not surrender our markets without a supreme effort to retain them, the prospects of California finally controlling the lemon markets of this country were never better than they are today. The opportunity for obtaining such figures as given above came about largely through the disastrous marketing seasons which the Sicilians have had for several years past, intensified this past winter. The Sicilian growers were not anxious to make heavy shipments to the United States out of their small stocks, but placed their product elsewhere, with the result that our markets have been left comparatively free of the foreign "invasion." Lemon growing in California is entering upon a new stage of development, and if the growers will properly care for their orchards and fruit until the time of shipment, the forward movement for the control of the United States markets manners. We dance must stand together to waltz from degenerating not what it was ten years because Americans have careless about it. The through everything, whether it is a waltz, or a polka." In the States out of their small stocks, but placed their product elsewhere, with the result that our markets have been left comparatively free of the foreign "invasion." Lemon growing in California is entering upon a new stage of development, and if the growers will properly care for their orchards and fruit until the time of shipment, the forward movement for the control of the United States markets will not be checked. Shipments of lemons from all of California for the year will aggregate 5000 cars, as against 3000 the year before. LIKE FINDING MONEY Finding health is like finding money—so think those who are sick. When you have a cough, cold, sore throat or chest irritation, better act promptly like W. C. Barber of Sandy Level, Va. He says: "I had a terrible chest trouble, caused by smoke and coal dust on my lungs; but after finding no relief in other remedies, I was cured by Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds." Greatest sale of any cough or lung medicine in the world. At W. B. Hutchinson drug store; 50c and $1; guaranteed. Trial bottle free. AN INVALID ENACTMENT By a decision recently rendered the supreme court has declared unconstitutional the law which provided that all boxes and packages of shipped fruit must bear in inch high letters the name of the county and immediate locality where the contents were grown. The provision was ostensibly aimed at stopping the shipment of bad produce from localities famous for excellent products, but was really in the interest of certain sections that have won good reputations without necessarily having surpassed other parts of the state in producing the fruit. The court holds that the law is unreasonable and in rendering its decision against the state says: "It has come to be well recognized that the liberty and pursuit of happiness in which the individual products, but was really in the interest of certain sections that have won good reputations without necessarily having surpassed other parts of the state in producing the fruit. The court holds that the law is unreasonable and in rendering its decision against the state says: "It has come to be well recognized that the liberty and pursuit of happiness in which the individual is protected by the constitution of the United States and of the state applies fully to his right of contract, his right to follow a legitimate vocation, untrammeled by unnecessary regulations, as it does to the freedom of arrest or restraint of his person." EVERYTHING IS TWO-STEP NOW Waltzing is becoming a lost art, according to delegates attending the twenty-eighth annual convention of the American Society of the Professors of dancing in New York, the other day. The professors are for that reason doing all they can to check the insidious two-step. "The whole trouble," said a delegate from Terre Haute, Ind., "is that dancing is looked upon merely as a social time-killer, when as a matter of fact, it is a means of developing grace, of promoting physical culture and teaching the best We dancing masters stand together to prevent the fire from degenerating, for it is what it was ten years ago, just those Americans have grown so much about it. They two-step through everything, no matter whether it is a waltz, a schottisch polka." Of the features of the demonstration before the convention was dancing of "the spirit of the city" a fancy half march, half movement. It is adapted for motion drills of children, and the elements are planned in the form of a pointed star. Street Trees in California Continued from last week.) For Poplar.—Round-headed with very striking foliage, the silvery surface turned outwards the play of the wind. Some sprouts, but is not ordinarily found in this way. It is an ornamental tree of old-time Californiardens. Chip Elm.—The most desirable the Elms as a street tree in California. It has a stout, round symmetrical crown and comes full foliage in the middle of Mary, two months earlier than Park Elm. Elm.—A standard tree for newwalk by reason of its hardiness vigor. It has been more used than any other species California. In the matter of celebrated "weeping oak" of the interior valleys, where it was at one time more abundant than now, giving to them the appearance of lordly parks. As agricultural operations increase these oaks will continue to disappear. They should, therefore, be planted along the country roads in order to simulate the original scenery characteristic of the interior, as there is no other tree which gives so stately an appearance to the Californian valleys, and no other tree which speaks so confidently of the richest lands. It is of rapid growth, and either assumes or may be made readily to assume the tall elm-like habit. It is a cause for profound regret that in some localities fine examples of these trees standing naturally on country roads are being cut down for cordwood fuel. California Walnut.—A native species, thoroughly adapted to our soils, and forming fine trees in a few years. English Walnut.—More tropical type of walnut. Most successful when grafted on the native walnut. Pecan.—Grows forty or fifty feet high in the interior valleys, where it is universally admired as a roadside tree. Linden.—Standard type of street tree. Does well in Oakland and other coast cities. English Hawthorn.—Very small tree, but attractive for its flowers and suitable for narrow roadways or for situations where it is desired to plant at less than the accepted interval. Italian Chestnut.—Tree of fairly The Elms as a street tree in Virginia. It has a stout, round symmetrical crown and comes full foliage in the middle of mary, two months earlier than York Elm. At Elm.—A standard tree for newwalk by reason of its hardiand vigor. It has been more used than any other species California. In the matter of Stockton's avenues are superior to any other city in Californe adornment of the street and of shade having been securfly by Elms. Cork Elms are feature of the streets of SacraBeautiful young trees in the main avenue leading from St. Helena. Occasionalspecies falls into the obnoxbit of suckering. American Elm.—An ideal street but not very successful in California. Its main limbs are easily by the wind, and the tree is to become ragged. Good trees may often be seen, howas about the Sacramento Har School, but one can recommend it, at least not Go.—The Ginko or Maiden tree is the sacred tree of Japan, China, and has long been pretained in the temple grounds. It is planted on account of its growth, but is interesting on out of its historical association of foliage which resembles that Maiden-hair Fern. It is a denovelty and, as said, grows It seems natural in the rush of Pacific Coast life that we should great hurry to have things away, and therefore we select street trees the most rapidly growing species. Nor is this to be used with altogether. We dene benefit of the trees ournot to plant entirely for posbut in a reasonable proporcases the streets should be with an enduring type of vision, especially with Ginko or Oak.—Native tree, the Linden.—Standard type of street tree. Does well in Oakland and other coast cities. English Hawthorn.—Very small tree, but attractive for its flowers and suitable for narrow roadways or for situations where it is desired to plant at less than the accepted interval. Italian Chestnut.—Tree of fairly rapid growth, cleanly built trunk and branches and handsome foliage. Oriental Plane.—In 1898 Dr. R. E. C. Stearns planted half a dozen in front of his premises in Los Angeles and speaks most enthusiastically of their growth. At the time of planting, the trees at the butt were about the size of a hoe handle; in 4½ years the largest was 8 inches in diameter. He further says, "they have surpassed my anticipations and are the handsomest trees in the city. I have been frequently asked by passers-by who stopped to admire them, whether they were maples. All speak highly of their beauty. The cloth-like texture of the leaves is favorable to the ready absorption of the moisture from the atmosphere, and as we have a great deal of damp or foggy weather and but few really hot days, they are the trees above all that I have met with for this place, and would no doubt do even better in the coast regions farther north." They stand transplanting admirably and may be rigidly pruned if desired. Other varieties of deciduous trees enumerated comprise Locust, Texas Umbrella, White Birch and Princess trees. Evergreen trees recommended—Black-wood Acacia, Large-flowered Magnolia, Silver Wattle, Grevillea, and Blue Gum. Why not buy a McCormick? You know there is no other mowing machine as good.
