STATE HORTICULTURAL COMMISSION Special Consular Reports on Fruit Conditions and Markets in Europe SPANISH ALMOND CROP The prospects and conditions of the almond crop this year are, on the whole, poor, owing to the drought experienced in the district of Alicante. In size the crop can be considered good, but the lack of rain has prevented the growth of the fruit, especially in the non-irrigated districts, where the kernels are particularly small. The quality of the almonds, in general, as a consequence of the drought, will be poor as compared with other years, and the good selections will be difficult to make. Although the size of the crop is considered fairly good, the want of rain has prevented the trees bearing all the fruit; but in spite of this, it must be borne in mind that the plantation of trees is yearly increasing, thus making the production greater. The coming crop can be calculated more or less the same as last year's, say some 1800 tons. There are no preliminary prices quoted so far, same are not fixed until the second fortnight of August, when first fruit is brought into market. The rate of freight for New York is 45s per ton of 20 hundred weight net via Genoa, and 50s ditto via Liverpool. During the past season about 400 of the different local houses is let to be more uniform than in other areas. The Spanish almonds of commerce are the "Jordan" and "Valencia" brands. The ordinary crop of the mer is about 70,000 boxes, while yearly yield of "Valencia" numbers more than double that of Malaga is the exporting center; no competitors are in sight; it is that "Compania Almendrera" handle the entire business. The agreement is for five years the capital listed at one million ($140,000 U.S. gold). The only officer beside the managers is the retary, Fermin Alarcon. D. R. BIRCH, Co. MALAGA, Spain, July 17, 1905 LEMON AND ALMOND MARKET MESSINA The crop of summer lemons district is about one-fourth larger that of last year, and the qualityter. Prices c. i. f. New York range 12s to 14s. The freight rate is 1s 3d net. The almond crop promises to good quality, and it is estimated that the yield will reach 160,000 bags kilos each. This, it will be stood, represents the probable of the island. To attempt to estimate of the yield of the would be useless, for the reason the exportation is not confined lately to production of a certainity. Exporters buy from every Sicily, and a bag of almonds or shipped from Messina contains products of every district in Sicily. The prices quoted by growers livery at the warehouses in Mez October are lire 145 per 10 (about $28 per 224 lbs). The rate of freight for New York is 45s per ton of 20 hundred weight net via Genoa, and 50s ditto via Liverpool. During the past season about 400 tons of almonds were shipped to the United States from the port of Alicante, viz.: 18,820 boxes, 1,161 barrels, making a total value of $162,244.71. H. W. CAREY, Consular Agt. ALICANTE, July 13, 1905. THE SPANISH ALMOND COMBINE A syndicate, which will probably control the Malaga almond market, has just been formed by the seven principal Malaga exporters. "Compania Almendrera," the corporate name of the "trust," is a limited liability company, and will operate under a Spanish deed just signed. The shares are 200 in number and are divided amongst the following mercantile houses: Bevan & Co., Garret & Co., Reim & Co., Cumming & Vandulken, Federico, Gross & Co., P. Casada, S. en C., and Fermin Alarevnenbig. The syndicate will have to do only with the purchase of the almonds from the growing districts, and will not intervene with respect to the ultimate sales to American and European buyers. Each local exporting house will retain its identity, and business will be conducted along lines followed in past seasons. The purpose of the trust. its organizers frankly admit, is to reduce first-cost prices and to eradicate certain alleged abuses heretofore practiced by local speculators and brokers. Roberto F. Bevan and Thomas R. Geary, composing the firm of Bevan & Co., are to be the salaried managers of the company. They will buy the almonds, either direct from the growers or through brokers, and store them in their warehouses. These will then be subject to the demands of the syndicate, to whom the almonds will be sold at a price "contingent upon the exigencies of the situation." Prices of almonds, cost, and freight, New York, for the season beginning would be useless, for the reason the exportation is not confined lately to production of a certainity. Exporters buy from every Sicily, and a bag of almonds or shipped from Messina contains ducts of every district in Sicily. The prices quoted by growers livery at the warehouses in Messina October are lire 145 per 10 (about $28 per 224 lbs). Up to the present no quotation available for shipments to Asia but it is believed that the price not reach those of last season. I can find no figures on raisins in the Custom House returns for 1903 and 1904. In a special report on "Raisins and Almonds," dated July 26, 1904, I stated that the "muscatel grape is not grown to any great extent in this section, presumably for the reason that almost exclusive attention is given to the production of the white grape." The very few muscatel grapes grown are for local consumption. A. E. CARLETON, Consular Agt. B.
