TO ADVANCE THE PACIFIC STATES Continued from Page 2 creating of markets nearer home for the products of the soil and the output of our factories. "We need a larger population to consume as well as to produce. We need to fill our vast fertile agricultural regions with an industrious people. We need men who will come in and join with us in developing the many opportunities that are here. "Much is being accomplished in this direction now, and the development and prosperity of the Pacific States during the last few years, in particular, is marvelous; but we must see that these conditions continue and that they improve. CO-OPERATION SUCCEEDS "I am a firm believer in the old saying, 'In union there is strength.' You have shown it here in Seattle. You have pulled together, and out of what was a mere lumber camp twenty years ago has sprung up this wonderful city, which I see for the first time now, but whose growth I have watched with the greatest interest and admiration. What you have done here by co-operation they are also doing in Oregon. We are likewise doing in California. The people in these States are pulling together for the general good. They are firm in the belief that what is for the benefit of one is for the benefit of all. They have set aside boundary lines and are working together, in rivalry, yes—in jealous rivalry—no. California, I can say authoritatively, has advanced more..." LUMBER Sash, Doors, Shakes, Lath, Lime C. Ganahl Lumber CHAS. F. CRIM, EAST CENTER ST., ANAHEIM GERMANIA JOHN D. They are firm in the belief that what is for the benefit of one is for the benefit of all. They have set aside boundary lines and are working together, in rivalry, yes—in jealous rivalry—no. California, I can say authoritatively, has advanced more in the last three years on these lines than in a decade before such sentiment prevailed. "I am not telling you, men of Seattle, anything new, I am aware, because you are wise men, and have been working on these lines here. Now what is good for a community or for a commonwealth is good for a section of the country when the interests of that section are so closely identified as are the interests of the Pacific States. When I say the Pacific States I include Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and the Territory of Arizona, which, we hope, will soon be made a State. These Pacific States can do much by working together for one common end—the upbuilding of the Pacific Coast." ATTRACT PEOPLE TO PACIFIC STATES "When we stop and contemplate the enormous area covered by these States, and the fact that there were, according to the twelfth census, only three million people within their boundaries, we must realize how much room there is for an increased population, and we must realize, also, that while each location may not suit every one, there is on this coast a place for all. So I say, and I think you will agree with me, create an interest in the Pacific States, direct desirable people this way, and within the borders somewhere each will find a satisfactory abode. "We have on this coast fewer sea ports than there are on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. There is need of all these sea ports, and more, for the commerce that will eventually develop. It would ap- create an interest in the Pacific States, direct desirable people this way, and within the borders somewhere each will find a satisfactory abode. "We have on this coast fewer sea ports than there are on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. There is need of all these sea ports, and more, for the commerce that will eventually develop. It would appear to be good business policy for us all to assist in the development of these ports that nature has endowed us with, by securing appropriations from the Federal Government for their improvement, because I assure you that every ton of freight that passes any one of these ports is of advantage to all the other ports on this coast. The business that comes to any part of the Pacific Coast benefits the entire coast, whether that business be at San Diego or at Seattle, at San Francisco or at Portland. "There is such a variety of production in the Pacific States that they are a world in themselves, and with our resources developed and with our population increased with desirable, industrious men and women, we will have less occasion to seek markets afar, and we all know that the nearer the market to the producer, the greater is his prosperity. As an example: California is a customer of Washington for its lumber, coal, wheat, flour and beer, and many other things that I think I am safe in saying bring better returns than the same commodities do when shipped to more remote markets." "I am grateful for the opportunity of saying these things to you, not that you are not thoroughly aware of conditions, but oftentimes we are, all of us, inclined to lose sight of the fact that every State west of the Rocky Mountains is in a great measure dependent on all the others of the same region, and that the prosperity of the one enhances the prosperity of the others. So, this being the condition commercially, let us get together, exchange ideas, know one another, and let the world know that there is one great family out this way composed of men that mean business, and men, who, when occasion arises, will put their shoulders to the wheel and do things for the Pacific States as a whole. HELP TO FEDERAL RECOGNITION "I would like our representatives in Congress to be fortified in the good work they are doing by this expressed sentiment of the business men. I know it would help them at Washington if, when you want an appropriation at Bremerton, or Oregon wants assistance to improve the Columbia River, or California or any other Pacific State wants something for its benefit, we all should jump in and see that it is secured through our Senators and Congressmen. "There is no doubt about the sentiment of the people being reflected on their representatives at Washington. The press, too, will stand by us, I am sure, and avoid all expressions of jealous rivalry. I am ready now to pledge the loyalty of California on these lines, and I am equally sure that Oregon, Washington and..." I am ready now to pledge the loyalty of California on these lines, and I am equally sure that Oregon, Washington and all the other Pacific States are ready to join in a movement that is bound to be successful. UNITED PACIFIC STATES “To cement this movement it is absolutely necessary that the people of every State cultivate harmonious relations among themselves, for, as a house divided against itself cannot stand, neither can a commonwealth divided against itself accomplish its own best good. We have found this out in California, and are profiting by the knowledge. The good results we have secured in California by putting this wisdom to practical use convinces us that such benefits may be made more far reaching and include all of the States west of the Rocky Mountain water shed. “It is proposed to form an association in the near future that will include representatives from all the States mentioned. The objects of this association to be to promote the interests of these States and to define their position for progress so that others may see that they can stand undivided and watchful of their allied interests.” FIENDISH SUFFERING is often caused by sores, ulcers and cancers that eat away your skin.
