Los Angeles decided by a vote of 15,270 to 8466, at its municipal election on Friday, against closing saloons in that city, and will henceforth be a high-license town. The campaign provoked a spirited contest between the irrepressible Dr. Chapman and the prohibits, on one side, and liberal-spirited people of all parties, upon the other. Not a ward in the town voted in favor of prohibition, Dr. Chapman's own precinct going against him by a substantial majority. Dr. Chapman announces he will make another attempt to "close out the saloon," and will probably move in the near future for another vote. Inasmuch as the election cost the taxpayers of Los Angeles in the neighborhood of $12,-000, it would seem the attempt of this irrepressible old gentleman should be blocked by those who pay the bills—in a word, that he should be mildly sat upon. Inasmuch as the election cost the taxpayers of Los Angeles in the neighborhood of $12,000, it would seem the attempt of this irrepressible old gentleman should be blocked by those who pay the bills—in a word, that he should be mildly sat upon. The vote is decisive enough for all except the most rampant prohibition shouter, and Chapman's averment that he would call for another vote should be discountenanced. Los Angeles has gone on record as a high-license city. The result was brought about in full knowledge of the fact that prohibition is a failure in Maine and Kansas and other eastern states, as well as here in California—in Pasadena, Riverside, Pomona, Santa Ana, in all of which places prohibition is the veriest farce. Tax the liquor traffic, make it bear its share of the burdens of government, issue no license except to those who conduct orderly and respectable places; that is the practical method of dealing with the saloon. What Los Angeles has done will be good enough for other Southern California towns to follow. ANAHEIM is probably the greatest berry-producing district in Southern California. It is doubtful if there exists anywhere on earth a section with such rich possibilities in this pleasing as well as profitable occupation. Our stores and fruit stands are exhibiting a wealth of berry displays. The list includes strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, dewberries and loganberries, and the consumer must be hard to please who cannot be satisfied with the displays daily set before him. Berries are being shipped, not by the carload, but soon be known as Dogtown. the evil be forthwith reAnaheim has had no dog ta no impounding of the purp long the memory of the old habitant runneth not to th trary. Berries are being shipped, not by the carload, but very nearly so, as an inspection of the depots in the early morning hours will reveal. Shipments are made by express to San Diego, Redlands, Los Angeles and other points. Within a few days berries will be so cheap that the frugal housewife begins her yearly jelly-making campaign, and dozens of jars of this healthful and delightful food will be stored away in many a household. We hear so much of the adulteration of jams and jellies offered for sale that the thought arises, Is there not an inviting market for pure jams and jellies here in California and elsewhere? We have no doubt a factory giving attention to supplying this market would be an instantaneous success. Here is the natural field for such an enterprise. The fruit is here, yea by the trainload. What is lacking is the man with capital and energy sufficient to see the glorious prospect ahead of him. Present, Directors Ahlborn, Michod, Wallop, Grim, Miller. The erection of a public hitching rack was discussed. The location of the rack is the bone of contention, as residents contiguous to the sites suggested in every case have objected to the location of the rack in their midst. The public improvement committee, however, will give the matter further attention, looking to its construction. The directors grappled with the contemplated moving of the building off from the Odd Fellows' lot to the premises of Fritz Yungbluth on Center street. The city trustees had already given written permission, out of meeting, to the owner to move the structure. In the opinion of all the directors this action of the city dads establishes a very bad and unprogressive precedent. It retards the upbuilding of the town, remarked a member of the chamber, in that, if a citizen can get good rent out of buildings as these, he certainly will not improve his holdings with more pretentious, up-to-date structures. That, it was argued, has been the case in several instances in the past. The directors were non-plused. The wooden structure was going to be moved in the morning, before breakfast, and the august chamber directors did not know what to do. Here it was 9 p.m.-they could not serve an injunction, the city fathers favored the move, and the guardians of our public welfare were "up a stump." [Later.—The structure was moved as originally intended.] The committee appointed to investigate the charge preferred against Herr Kohlenberger, wherein he was accused of working the chamber's telephone overtime with his real estate business, reported that the accusation was true. And Kohlenberger doesn't deny it; and he has taken in a partner, too. Eight members of the chamber have announced their intention of quitting unless Kohlenberger gives up his real estate business. Asked if he would desist from engaging in that line of trade while in the rooms of the exhibits, he replied, Nay, nay, Pauline. "I not will promise that; my personal liberty away I will swear not," he said. It is hard to get a party to care for the exhibit rooms for the meagre salary offered. The party must carry on some sort of business there to help pay expenses. Kohlenberger is gradually turning the exhibit room into a clothes foundry and a real-estate promotion center. All of which is in very bad taste and should not be tolerated by the chamber of commerce. Something has to be done or the chamber members, a lot of them, will be marked absent. The directors are out looking for a new tenant. Secretary Michod advertises in another column this morning for a competent party to take charge of the exhibit rooms. Secretary Michod read a quantity of correspondence, after which the chamber adjourned. Anaheim Operahouse Two Nights Only!
