Engineer Lewis appeared before the board in reference to criticisms about doing unauthorized work in constructing a pole line on Lemon street, showing he was authorized by a member of the board so to do. He discussed various matters with the board, and called attention to the fact that the electric works are frequently overloaded with demands for light, and that attention must be given the matter soon. Also that water was being raised 23 feet from below the pumps in the well pit, and this was too great a raise for good service.
The city is expanding so rapidly that both these matters are of great importance and must come up for consideration in the near future.
Bills to the amount of $1720.36 were ordered paid.
Mrs. Davis' Condition
O. S. Davis has received the following letter from A. P. Williamson, M.D., medical superintendent of the Southern California state hospital at Patton, regarding the condition of Mrs. Davis, who was recently taken to that institution:
Patton, San Bernardino Co., Dec. 5th, 1904.
O. S. Davis, Esq., Anaheim, Cal.
Dear Sir:—Replying to your letter we will say that Mrs. Davis has quieted considerably. She has now gone to the other extreme and it is difficult to get her to answer questions at all. She has had several convulsions since she entered the hospital. On the whole, however, I think we can say she is a little better. Respectfully yours,
A. P. WILLIAMSON,
Medical Supt.
Mr. Davis informs us busy-bodies have been circulating reports derogatory to his character as affecting his treatment of his wife previous to her being sent to Patton. These reports, he states, are entirely without foundation in fact. His treatment of his wife is known to have been all that patience and affection could have dictated, and Mrs. Davis was only sent to the asylum after it seemed impossible to longer keep her here. Her condition became rapidly worse, and sad as the family parting must have been, it was only for the best of all concerned. Mrs. Davis shows improvement in her condition. There is hope that she may yet regain her faculties sufficiently to justify her liberation. Mr. Davis is entitled to the sympathy of his neighbors, not the idle gossip of the community.

GARDEN SEEDS distribution begins today at this Napoleon Hart returned from Camden, N.J., after an absence of three weeks. He was with Thos. R. Green, inventor of a compressed-air device in which Mr. Hart is interested, and reports flattering prospects for putting the machine on the market. He visited points of interest in New York, Philadelphia and other cities. Below-zero weather prevailed several days previous to his departure and hastened his return to the glorious climate of California.
The Home Telephone Company has been engaged in the construction of its long-distance line from Buena Park to Fullerton, a distance of four miles. It touches the main Los Angeles Santa Ana line at the Cox ranch. Stakes have been set for the pole line on the north side of Commonwealth avenue. The Fullerton office probably will be in McColloch & Hoffman's store. The city and suburban service will be installed as soon as the poles can be put up.
Mrs. Stephen Cottle who returned some days ago from Phoenix is indisposed as the result of sustaining a shot in the hand, by the accidental discharge of a revolver, while packing her belongings previous to her return to this city. The ball entered the palm and ploughed its way through the arm as far as the elbow, where it was later extracted. Since her return her health has shown little if any improvement, and the shock of the accident has proven an impediment to her recovery.
Leonard Foster, aged 14 years, residing with his mother and step-father, J. B. Pierce, at Centralia, was before Judge West in superior court on Thursday charged with incorrigibility. Pierce suggested to have the boy committed to the Whittier reform school. Friends of the boy, feeling he was getting the worst of it from his stepfather, interceded in his behalf, offering testimony in court in his support. An attorney was employed to defend him, and as a result the judge refused to order the commitment. Thomas McGuire was appointed guardian of the youth and will in future look after his interests.
