In the early days wagon-loads of pine trees were brought into town for decoration as Christmas trees, but for years none of them have been seen among the haunts of man. The cause of this disappearance of these trees is the fact that the government has made it an offense to chop them down. These pine trees are protected by forest reserves, to the end that the water as well as timber supply of the mountains might be conserved. In other words, the government has ordered that the denudation of the forests must cease, and never was legislative action characterized by greater wisdom. It is a loss to the household at Christmastide to be minus one of these lovely pine trees, but we shall have to get along with other varieties with which to please the little ones; but nothing that Uncle Sam has engaged in possesses more intrinsic value to our people than has protection to the forests and water supply of our mountains.
The first of the measures aimed at the appalling of each state's representation in the House actual voting population is the bill which Platt of New York has introduced in the Senate purposes are to base each state's representation male voting population, according to the last census. By the operation of such a measure it become a law, it is estimated that sixteen in the South will be affected. It will acute the whole southern question and will arouse antagonism in the South. Senator Platt's measure is aimed at no particular section of the try, and will affect all states alike, and is a fair basis of representation in Congress. He intention to the fact that his bill will affect the arn states, and among them Massachusetts. Sists his bill conforms to the plank in the Rep national platform which favors an investiga Congress of this subject, and, after facts aretained, a reduction of representation in the states, according to the Fourteenth amendment constitution. The Republicans contend that southern states, where the negro vote is sup there is a representation in Congress entirely proportion to that in other parts of the country, they also say, the national plank bill along the lines of that here referred to...
Henry E. Huntington has acquired the interest of I. W. Hellman in the Pacific Electric Railway Company, and it is announced he will push the construction of his contemplated lines with greater vigor than ever. From private sources it is learned that reports published in Los Angeles newspapers to the effect that the two have had a falling out are altogether unfounded. Both gentlemen remain friends; Hellman has simply sold to Huntington. The banker did not care to follow the railroad man in his work of constructing one of the most extensive systems of electric railways in the world, and he retired. It is announced on good authority that work upon the line to Santa Ana, as well as the line to Riverside, will be pushed to completion speedily. However, whether the latter line will run through La Habra and Placentia remains with the people of East Whittier, who have not yet secured right of way for the road. Huntington said in Los Angeles this week that unless this right of way be immediately secured the line to Riverside would run eastward through the upper valley, and Whittier would be left upon a spur.
Luther Burbank, the Wizard of Horticulture, after ten years' work at his Santa Rosa experimental farm, has just perfected a spineless cactus, which he regards as one of his most useful productions. This cactus is so free from spines that the leaf is absolutely smooth. It may be used for forage, and as it grows without water, it will be of immense service for forage in the Colorado and Mojave deserts. Burbank estimates that it will produce half as much feed to the acre as alfalfa, and that it is nearly as nutritious.
The people of Arizona are making protest against that feature of the statehood bill which consolidates the territory with New Mexico as one state, and have asked for a hearing, which the committee evidences a disposition to grant.
James C. Needham, representative in from the Sixth California district, was on appointed a member of the House Ways and Committee by Speaker Cannon. It had beenally understood that Needham would get the ever since Representative Metcalf resigned his Congress to go into the President's Cabinet, were so many other aspirants that the thing not be regarded as settled until actually and At the same time Speaker Cannon announced point of Representative Knowland of as a member of the House committee on Weights and Measures.
Congressman Daniels, a dispatch from Washington states, is an applicant for a "good Federation" under this administration, adding that he ready to assume its duties as soon as his congressman expires. When Cap'n Daniels pired to a seat in congressional halls, he advoys boys he desired to "round out" his career as a man from this district. Now that he is so out of a job, perhaps the Cap'n suspects he needs a leetle more "rounding."
Farmers at La Habra and upon the Santa Ana have begun dry plowing and are sowing basal good soaking rain is what is needed to bring range county a merry Christmas.

Measures aimed at the apportionment representation in the House on the question is the bill which Senator Platt has introduced in the Senate. Its beach state’s representation on the floor, according to the last official iteration of such a measure, should be estimated that sixteen districts may be affected. It will acutely open the question and will arouse bitter South. Senator Platt says his no particular section of the countryside states alike, and is a just and unanimous statement in Congress. He calls at that his bill will affect the north-western them Massachusetts. He insists to the plank in the Republican which favors an investigation by object, and, after facts are ascertained representation in the several Fourteenth amendment to the Republicans contend that in the case the negro vote is suppressed, legislation in Congress entirely out of its other parts of the country, alway, the national plank and the fact that here referred to does not matter.
A deal was consummated on Friday whereby the Palmyra Hotel at Orange, with thirteen lots, and all hotel furnishings, was sold to a number of Santa Ana investors for a stated consideration of $10,000. The entire property was to have been sold at public auction on the 15th inst., and had already been advertised for sale when the purchasers opened up negotiations which were closed. The men who now own the place include, W. M. Scott, John N. Anderson, W. B. Wetherbe and others. They are the same parties that two weeks ago purchased the Rochester Hotel property. Hotel properties will be used for sanitarium purposes.

Rule For Cyclists.
One of the rules of a bicycle club reads, "A horse should never be passed on both sides at once." We suspect that when a cyclist attempts to pass on both sides of a horse "at once" he is expelled from the club. He would certainly be dismissed from a temperance organization. — London Tit-Bits.
