PACIFIC ELECTRIC TROLLEY REACHES LANDING Double Track Railway Laid to Bridge Spanning Channel—Graders at Bolsa Chica. On Sunday the first trolley on the Pacific Electric railway was brought up to the waters edge at the Landing. At this point a bridge is in course of construction across the channel, about 1000 feet in length. Piles have been driven and steel laid upon it, but the forty foot draw bridge in the center has not yet been completed, the necessary steel not having arrived. The entry of the first trolley car into the precincts of this favorite old watering place was made the occasion of a large outpouring of people from the entire countryside. The train was hauled by a small engine, and contained a long string of cars loaded with rails, poles, wire and other equipments for the electric railway. From the Long Beach line to the Landing a double track railway has been constructed, and cars will be running over the new line sometime during the present month. The graders have pushed along on the other side of the channel toward Bolsa Chica and are now making dirt fly on that ranch. From Bolsa Chica to Newport Beach, a distance of ten miles remains to be graded, this will be completed in a fortnight. Track layers follow graders closely, and it is announced rails will be laid to Newport Beach before July 1st. Deeds for right of way for the road have been placed on record this week through the holdings of the Newport Beach company, extending from Bolsa Chica to Newport Beach. The advent of the electric railway adds further to the boom in beach property along Orange County Coast. Between Long Beach and Newport several townsites have been laid, notably at Alamitos Beach, Bay City, Huntington Beach and other points, and it is now announced that Hellman has in view a large townsite enterprise at the Landing. He recently succeeded in BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO DEAD Graves of Departed Soldiers Strewn with Flowers—A Notable Ovation. Memorial day was fittingly observed by Malvern Hill Post and Woman's relief corps of Fullerton in this city on Monday. At 10 o'clock veterans and their families and friends gathered at the cemetery to strew flowers upon the graves of departed comrades. The cemetery seemed in places to be carpeted with flowers. Veterans coming from a distance brought lunches, which were partaken of in groups under the shade of trees adjoining the cemetery. Many lingered until well after the noon hour beside the last resting places of loved ones who had gone before. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon literary exercises of the day began at the Opera house. The hall was filled with a large audience which followed the program with interest throughout. The Stars and Stripes were displayed upon the stage, and portraits of Grant, Logan and other heroes of the war were conspicuous. Dr. Wm. Freeman of Fullerton called the meeting to order and presided during the afternoon. The exercises opened by the offering of the invocation by Rev. Markle of the Christian Church of this city. The Buena Park choir, composed of Miss Terry, Miss Weber and Mr. McKenny, sang "They'll Never March Again." Lincoln's Gettysburg address was rendered by Joe McKenny. Miss Terry favored the audience with a patriotic solo. Rev. Rundell of Buena Park recited the "Blue and the Gray." The Buena Park choir sang again very acceptably. Clyde Bishop of Santa Ana was introduced and responded with an able address occupying an hour in its delivery. Bishop was never in better form, and his oration, which was delivered without notes, takes rank with the best ever delivered here, and Anaheim has h eard many cloquent Memorial day addresses in the past. The exercises closed by singing the FATHER DUBBEL ON SULLIVEN Denounces Him as a Fraud. Untruthful Person and Vagabond Who Sought Aid From the Catholic Church. EDITOR GAZETTE—Dear Sir: Per me a little space in your paper, for few remarks which in my opinion may be of benefit to some of our fellow citizens. A few days ago in the Christian Church of this city, a certain Mr. Sullivan also sailing under the alias "Brother Rupret" lectured on the topic "The Catholic Church." This man claims to have been a missionary in the church, but now a graduate, disguised with its abuses, he has become a wartering apostle, and goes about enlightening the American people on the evils of that church. Well, Sir, the man too small a fry either for me to lose time on him, or for you to waste priors ink; still it may be interesting if our people learn how they, despite their intelligence, like to be humbugged. In the first place the man is a fraud. He is untruthful, for now was he an ordained minister. As vagabond he sought aid from the Holy Cross Fathers at South Bend, Indiana Charity being shown to him, he sought admission in the order, and actually was received. Admitted to the novice, where he remained for eight nine months. An unfit subject, he was dismissed. His bile conquering his little mind, he joined an anti-Catholic society and under their auspices delivers lectures, and incidentally seeks collection. Being too ignorant to attack the doctrines of the church, he entertains his audience with filthy stories, as some of his hearers have learned. Any one desiring more information about him may write to the Superior of the institution given above. Enough about this fellow. Is it not sad, Mr. Editor, that Anaheim again should be behind the times? The fellow was exposed in the city papers of Pomona a couple of months ago, and had to leave town. Were it for him only I would not worry you or rush into print, but what can we say about the management of a church that permits a man of such an unsavory reputation? Beach before July 1st. He recently succeeded in quieting title to an extensive belt of sea front property at that point, and it is said the property will be sub-divided and sold off in building lots. This boom in building lots is extending well into San Diego county, and it is the opinion of those well informed that the entire seaport from Long Beach to San Diego will be bought up and turned into townsites. Several syndicates of Los Angeles and Long Beach capitalists have been formed and transfers already aggregate well up to the million mark. It is the intention of these moneyed men to have country residences overlooking the sea, and already many such have been erected at various points along the coast. The advent of a double track electric railway, bringing Orange county coast points to within thirty minutes of Los Angeles has caused a flurry in values, and lots in some of these near townsites are held at higher prices than lots of a similar size in the residence section of Los Angeles. When the electric graders reach Newport Beach, it is said they will be transferred to the Southern Pacific's proposed route between Smeltzer and Benedict, surveys for which have already been made and right of way secured. Trains all run on the line through this city to Los Angeles. With the construction of this line mails for Garden Grove, Westminster and the Peatlands will be carried over the new road. Instead of going by the roundabout course to Santa Ana and thence transferring to these points, the more direct railway line will be chosen. Four hundred cholos are at work upon the grade, and have been in camp at the Landing for ten days past. Yesterday the grade had extended well along toward the Bolsa Chica. Gravel is being hauled for the roadbed across the marsh land beyond the channel at the Landing. FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Next Sunday in the Catholic Church of this city will be observed the feast of Corpus Christi, or in other words the feast of the Blessed Sacrament. It calls to the mind of the Christian the institution of the Lord's Supper, which took place on the eve of the Saviour's death, but as during that week the church is occupied with the consideration of the Master's suffering, a special day apart from Maundy Thursday of Holy Week is set aside in Catholic churches to honor the Sacrament of Christ's real presence in his church. This year the feast will be observed with especial solemnity. After the Miss Terry favored the audience with a patriotic solo. Rev. Rundell of Buena Park recited the "Blue and the Gray." The Buena Park choir sang again very acceptably. Clyde Bishop of Santa Ana was introduced and responded with an able address occupying an hour in its delivery. Bishop was never in better form, and his oration, which was delivered without notes, takes rank with the best ever delivered here, and Anaheim has h eard many eloquent Memorial day addresses in the past. The exercises closed by singing the national anthem, led by the Buena Park choir, the audience participating. Rev.Rundell offered the benediction, and the audience dispersed. DRAINAGE DISTRICT. The voters of the proposed Talbert drainage district at Talbert were given an opportunity Saturday to approve or disapprove of the proposition by ballot. The vote recorded shows there was but little opposition to the plan, the vote for being 65, and against 5. S. Talbert, J. B. Bushard and Louis Hell were elected a board of directors. Whether the money to carry on the work will be raised by special tax or by bonding the district has not yet been decided on. The latter is most favored. The board will organize at once and the work of laying out the ditches will not be delayed long. Resolutions of Condolence. Hall of Anaheim Lodge, No. 199, I. O. O. F., Anaheim, Cal., May 31st, 1904. ANOTHER INJUNCTION Officers of the Santa Ana Valley Irigation Company and the Anaheim Union Water Company have secured evidence that O.B.Fuller and other ranchers in Riverside county are again using water of the Santa Ana river for irrigating outside the natural watershed, in violation of the restraining order issued by Judge Bledsoe. The joint litigation committee of the two companies has issued instructions to their attorneys to commence proceedings against Fuller for contempt of court. This is Fuller's second alleged violation. Two altars will be erected in front of the old church building and another in the yard of the convent grounds, the Holy Sacrament being carried to these altars the benediction will be given. What will add to the interest of this day is that on this day it is expected that the brother of Father Dubbel of the local parish who is awaiting his ordination in Los Angeles as a priest of the Catholic Church is to celebrate his First Mass. This, however, will depend upon the return of Bishop Conat who is at present in the East. The ordination will take place in Los Angeles in the cathedral. A cordial invitation is extended not only to the members of the church but also to others to participate in these solemnities. He makes a good school trustee and his supporters are of opinion he has earned a second term. Medicine "Ads" May Have to Go In connection with the postoffice department's purpose to eliminate objectionable patent medicine and other advertisements from the newspapers, as announced some weeks ago, is that all these cases would be taken up individually on their merits. Each case will be considered carefully by the officers of the department, and when the cases are found to involve violations of the law governing such matters the American Newspaper Publishers' Association will be notified. That body according to the present plan, is to notify all of its papers which are members of the organization that the advertisement is contrary to law. The papers that are not represented in the 'Publishers' Association will be notified directly by the department and wherever papers so notified refuse to eliminate the objectionable matter the postoffice will exclude them from the malls. The question of the contracts which concerns may have with the publishers has been considered and it is asserted that if these are in violation of the law they could not operate in any way that would obstruct the carrying out of the post office department plans. Hellman was the original owner of the land, and three years ago gave leases above named company, a corporation composed of Anaheim and Fullerton men, to prospect the property for oil and other minerals, believing that productive oil wells could be located. After several fruitless attempts the company abandoned the proposition and Hellman recently filed suit to have an order issued terminating their interest in the property and giving him a clear title to it. An appeal will probably be taken. National Game. Olinda had little difficulty in enveloping with an elegant coat of whitewash the Woodmen of Los Angeles at Athletic park on Sunday afternoon. The foreigners could do nothing with Crandall's delivery, while the foothill tribesmen found Hitt early and often. Score, 10 to 0. Potatoes Stolen. Sometime during Saturday night thieves took advantage of the bright moonlight prevailing over the Terry farm on the east side and entered the potato patch and made away with $50 worth of the succulent vegetable. Mr. Terry states there are yet some potatoes left on the farm together with some of the best berries he ever raised, and if the thieves will kindly forward their address he will ship the whole shooting match to them, and no questions asked. Nothing small about Mr. Terry. McEachran's Minstrels. This is positively the greatest show on earth, so if you fail to attend the performance next Saturday evening at the Opera house you will miss the greatest treat ever. Comedians have been engaged at Ira Litten of Loara paid Los Angeles a business visit this week. Ira was recently in a railroad wreck at Lancaster, whither he had gone to ship a carload of horses to this point. At 3 o'clock in the morning, when on his homeward trip, the train was derailed, and seven carloads of cattle smashed. Forty head of beeves were killed outright, and a hundred head stamped over the hills. The train carried a quantity of dynamite, which was strewn along the track, but which fortunately failed to explode. Ira's stock was not disturbed, and after a delay of twenty four hours he resumed his journey. He arrived home in safety and disposed of the horses to good advantage. Mrs Asher and daughter Miss Gertrude Asher left this week for San Francisco, where they will remain for some weeks for the benefit of Mrs Asher's health.
