Time, it is said, makes everything right at last. Now it is said that with the construction of the railway between Benedict and Smeltzer mails for Garden Grove, Westminster and the peatlands will go by way of this city, instead of following the present roundabout course to Santa Ana and thence by wagons to these points. Anaheim is the correct geographical point from which these mails should diverge from the main line, and for years mails for all these places were forwarded from here. But in an evil hour Santa Ana wished to have free city delivery of its mail, and finding that its postoffice receipts were not sufficient to justify this step, it set about, like a larcenst in the night to steal away from us the two routes to Garden Grove and Westminster. Notwithstanding that the change necessitated a journey of eight miles further south on the main line, and then a further route by wagon from Santa Ana to these outlying points, the change was recommended by Senator Perkins, who was not at all informed on the subject, but who was rather misinformed by persons in his confidence at Santa Ana. Had Anaheim and the other localities affected been made aware of the contemplated change, vigorous protests would have been made to the post-office department against the scheme. But the work was done so quietly that those affected knew nothing of it until the cange in the route was announced from Washington. The matter of changing the mails back to their former route has been discussed at intervals, but nothing has come of it until the present time, when a concerted effort will be made as soon as the railway is constructed to have the mails go by rail. County Clerk Lester this week, acting under instructions from the board of supervisors, solicited a bid from this office for publishing the county's delinquent taxlist. According to his communication bids, were to be opened on May 31st (Tuesday) and the first publication in no later than June victims to it, and, in fact inheriting it from father and mother. The insular government is doing all it can to stamp out disease, but economic conditions will have to change before radical cures can be expected. Henry T. Oxnard has made formal announcement of his candidacy for the United States senatorship. In a published card he sets forth his purposes to come a candidate as follows: "In order to give my friend and neighbor, Senator Bard, an opportunity to return to California and personally set forth his position regarding the senatorship, I have, until this date, delayed declaring plans with reference to the approaching campaign. Will now state, however, that if the next legislature Republican, as it undoubtedly will be, my name be placed before it as a candidate for the United States senatorship." Mr. Oxnard is a man of large wealth and is one of the largest property holders in Southern California owning as he does sugar factories at Chino, Oxnard and Santa Maria. He has the support of men prominent in the party, and has strong backing in Francisco and Los Angeles. The Japs seem to have the Russians going, so they fight at Nanshan hill. It is doubtful if the greeks can save them. With trolley cars running to Anaheim Landing rect from Los Angeles, that splendid beach resort be said to be taking on metropolitan airs. Probably the activity in real estate which has swept over seaside property on the coastline from Ocean Park hitherto will characterize realty transactions at this point. Indeed, it may be said to have already done so. A handsome beach resort will spring into existence Bay City and Anaheim Landing admits of no doubts along the entire Southern California coast no placefers such splendid bathing facilities as these points; the Landing surf and stillwater bathing may be dulged in, and there is none of that undertow gives to sea bathing at other points an element of ger which operates to keep timid folk out of the water. Anaheim Landing also offers one of the best grounds on the lower coast. It is the only point that prized fish, the mullet, can be taken in any quantity, and shell fish abound as at no other place—sels, scallops, clams and other delectable mollusks this character. Trolley cars will probably be running into New Beach along this scenic coast route by the first of or not much later, and then we may see, within t County Clerk Lester this week, acting under instructions from the board of supervisors, solicited a bid from this office for publishing the county's delinquent taxlist. According to his communication bids, were to be opened on May 31st (Tuesday) and the first publication is to be made not later than June 5th (Saturday next.) In order to meet these requirements consequently, publication of the taxlist in this journal, should the award have been made us, should have been made first this morning (the 2d). Thus we should have had a scant day and a half in which to place the list in type, and when it is understood that proofs must be taken to the county seat to be read, it will be seen the time allowed is too short in which to do the work properly. The task is not entirely impossible, but we submit the supervisors, in asking bids for printing in future, give a little more attention to these trifling matters of detail. According to the Blade of Santa Ana, the work is such that it will not cost the county above $60, yet a bond of $1000 is required from the printer successfully bidding for it. These conditions may not be altogether insuperable, but the time limit is altogether too short to monkey with the supervisor's buz zsaw. From present appearances Senator Ward of San Diego will be the man upon whom all the South California counties will unite as the Republican candidate for congress. Only a short time ago it looked as if San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino would each have a "favorite son." Of course that meant Senator Smith would have a walkover. Sober reflection, sane counsel and a cool look over the situation has brought about a change, and, if the counties named stay all of one mind, Ward gets the nomination—which means election. —Redlands Citrograph. How the Southern California counties can combine upon Ward or any other San Diego man for this honor is something that does not appear quite clear to us. Look over the returns from that county two years ago, Bro. Craig, and tell us whether it is entitled to what it seeks. Where Daniels confidently expected 1700 majority, his democratic opponent swept this aside, carrying the county by a majority of 100. Look back a few years further, Bro. Craig, run your finger over the vote which defeated Bowers in his home county, and sent to Washington to represent us a pestilential calamity howler from which stain the district has not entirely recovered. San Diego defeated its own candidate for congress eight years ago, and did what it could two years ago to elect the democratic nominee. That is its political record to date. The four southern counties to unite upon another candidate from San Diego? Hardly, Scip, hardly! The extension of the Rock Island road from its Colorado terminal, to San Diego, has been determined upon, according to well-authenticated accounts. Fromfers such splendid bathing facilities as these points on the Landing surf and stillwater bathing may be dulged in, and there is none of that undertow wives to sea bathing at other points an element of ger which operates to keep timid folk out of the way. Anaheim Landing also offers one of the best fences on the lower coast. It is the only point where prized fish, the mullet, can be taken in any city, and shell fish abound as at no other place—sels, scallops, clams and other delectable mollusks this character. Trolley cars will probably be running into New Beach along this scenic coast route by the first of or not much later, and then we may see, within a weeks thereafter, the trolley car speeding through city over the Southern Pacific tracks, which report had it for some weeks past, is to become part of Huntington electric railway system. Rumor also has it that an electric car line was constructed through this city on Los Angeles north to Fullerton and the La Habra to a junction the Whittier line. Altogether the future of this series looks particularly bright. It was never roseate with promise. Anaheim Landing is the first lead off with metropolitan airs. Anaheim will projoin the procession in the not distant future. J. Ross Clark, vice-president of the Salt Lake way, accompanied by Chief Engineer William Hawk and other officials of the road, left on Monday to an inspection trip of the entire system. The party go by rail to Ivanpaugh, its present western terminus and from there will drive a distance of about 39 by slower conveyance to the end of the western plotted section of the new road. In that direction line is completed to a point 79 miles below Californi where Mr. Clark and party will take a special run through to Salt Lake City. The trip will be first of its kind made, and serves public notice that comparatively short time Los Angeles will be the minus for another trans-continental railway. E. W. Gillet, general passenger agent of the Lake road, has removed his family to Los Angeles paratory to transferring his headquarters from Salta to that city. Although Congress failed apparently to recapture the importance of the repeal of certain land laws are known to be detrimental to the settlement West, in that they allow of speculation among their lands, it is evident that the great business interest of the country are determined to secure such action is a possible thing. During the year such national organizations as the National Business League of Clare National Board of Trade, the American Hart Manufacturers' Association, the National Association Agricultural Implement and Vehicle Manufacturers' all great business organizations representing lions of dollars, have adopted strong and intolerable resolutions calling attention to the great national sibilities of the irrigation act and the increased which would accrue to the nation through their ment of its western lands under irrigation. The National Association of Manufacturers urged upon grass a policy by which all the remaining public available for agriculture, or which can be reclaimed der national irrigation act, should be "rigid" for the home-builder, the settler who lives on his and for no one else; and to this end we urge that grass should repeal the desert land act and the co- The four southern counties to unite upon another candidate from San Diego? Hardly, Scip, hardly! The extension of the Rock Island road from its Colorado terminal, to San Diego, has been determined upon, according to well-authenticated accounts. From Colorado Springs the line will follow a survey which was made by company engineers seventeen years ago. It will run southwest and enter New Mexico south and west of Durango. Crossing the San Francisco Pacific at Thoreau, the line will enter Arizona about seventy-five miles south of the Santa Fe Pacific. The road will pass through Prescott and cross the desert to San Diego. It is claimed the Rock Island owns 920 acres on the water front there for wharfage purposes. The new line will be 1150 miles long and a country rich in coal, mineral and timber will be opened, aside from new agricultural districts. Chicago officials have been gathering statistics for more than two years. A branch line from Dawson, N. M., to the new road to connect with it near Alamos, Colo., is under consideration. According to the consolidated report of the superior board of health for March, 1904, sanitary regulations promulgated by American officials in Porto Rico are bearing good fruit. The conscientious work of the American divines and missionaries, however, does not seem have produced a correspondingly good result. The native Porto Rican is healthier in body, but still very unclean morally. Of 9170 births on the island during March, 38 per cent. were illegitimate. The population of Porto Rico during March was 953,243, and the number of deaths was 1852, or 23.4 per cent. per 1000. This is 3 per cent. higher than the death rate of New York City, according to the last United States census, and 5.6 per cent. lower than that of New Orleans. The sanitary conditions are better every year. Fever is not feared, as in former years, and all around, there is a decided sanitary improvement. Mortality from anaemia was 313 for the month. This is the scourge of the island, poor half-starved natives falling easy If the last two months of the fiscal year 1904 up the pace set by the first ten months, all records exports of manufacturers from the United States will be broken. The export figure the first ten months of the fiscal year 1904, as prey by the Bureau of Commerce and Labor, exceed that any year in the history of the nation. The matured exports in the full fiscal year 1900 totaled 851,756. Should the present excess of 1904 over continue during the remaining two months of this it would bring the grand total of the exports of facturers up to $450,000,100. The total value of facturers' exports reported in ten months ending April, 1904, was $371,612,301, against $352,671,206 same period of the fiscal year 1900. Imports of facturers' raw material also made a very satisfactory showing, the grand total being in the ten months with April, 1904, $267,334,221, against $275,644 the ten months of last year. The Irvine Ranch Company is planning to open water on the San Joaquin ranch, and to that end begun to sink a number of 15-inch wells. With of water the ranch could be made one of the most productive sections of Southern California. The wet tracted for will be from 350 to 409 feet deep, at depth water is expected to be found in abundance. The company recently obtained a fine well near ranch house, and has just installed a pumping capable of producing a stream of 60 inches. County horticultural commissioners discussed scale pests and codlin moth at their meeting at Santa Ana this week. The commissioners have issued notices advising orchardists to commence without delay the work of spraying for codlin moth as this is the most favorable season to take measures for its extermination. The moth works on apples, pears and quinces, and although it never has been very destructive in this county the commissioners believe timely spraying will prevent its serious damage. Arsenical sprays applied with a power pump are recommended, in accordance with the directions contained in Bulletin 155 of the University of California, which is sent free on application to the university. The Lion of Keos. There are lions and lions, but the lion of Ioul is the lion of Hellias, says Professor J. Irving Mannutt in The Atlantic. The lions on guard above the gate of Mycene may be older, but they have lost their heads and therewith their main majesty. The lion sentinel over Leonidas' grave at Thermopyla disappeared ages ago, though we still possess the inscription written for it by Simonides: Of beasts the bravest l. of mortals he, Upon this mound of stone now watched by me. The lion of Chaeroneia commemorates a great and definite event, but he has been broken to pieces. Better luck has attained the lion of Keos. Couched here on his flank in the living rock, with reverted head, 28 feet from tip to tail every feature perfect, full of life and majesty, one can hardly think of him as a mere image made with hands. He looks rather as if in some prehistoric age—the colossus of his kind—he might have lain down here alive and turned to stone, possibly after clearing the island of its first occupants, for there is a myth handed down to us by an old writer that Keos was originally inhabited by the nymphs until they were scared away by a lion and fled to Karystos, leaving to the "jumping off place" the name of Lion point. At all events the monument and the myth make a perfect fit. Our lion is the very beast to strike terror into nymphs or any other unwelcome neighbors.
